If you care about winning basketball games, then 100 percent you hire John Brannen. Josh Moon should be in New York right now hanging with Coach Brannen in the hotel lobby finishing up the contract.
Let’s get it done!

This line of thinking would have disqualified Dick Bennett in 1985. Granted that was almost 40 years ago but if you can coach you can coach. That was almost 40 years ago. Everything is different about how to build a winning team. Basketball has evolved from a style and strategy perspective. What works in lower levels of basketball doesn't always work in higher levels. The skill level has changed for kids. The level of athlete and skill needed to win a D1 game is higher. The entire problem with this search is people don't want to accept it is time to look forward and not backwards. Would love to know your coaching background and understand how you can say you people looking backwards. As far as I'm concerned Brannen, Wicks and Tharp are looking forward. Chris Beard and Rick Pitino aren't walking thru that door. This is Green Bay. Not Wisconsin. Not even Milwaukee.

I know some other names that applied that have accomplished more. Ben Johnson is a direct call out to the past. People think Tharp is going to be a Dick Bennett or Kevin Borseth. Several influencers have used those words. I would tell you I'd love to know your coaching background but that would be a lie.

Brannen has the best resume, no question. Will he be the choice? Time will tell. A good business venture does require risk and differentiation. We will see what Moon does. The other finalists when Bennett got the job were Iowa assistant Jim Rosborough, Pitt assistant Jay Eck (who ultimately took the UWSP job) and Bradley assistant Tony Barone. Bennett got a bump to $42,000 from the $36,000 he was making at Point. Bennett was obviously the best of the four. My point is today everyone would howl if they hired him over two Power 5 assistants and an assistant from a quality mid-major. Even if he was the best man for the job. Which he was and still would be. "Fit" requires more than a resume. I don’t see any Power 5 assistants on this list.

Cleveland State coming off of 5-13 horizon league season with a player mutiny hired Dennis Gates on July 26th.
Some high major assistants coaches apparently did apply and interview.
Some sitting D1 head coaches apparently did apply and interview.
I don't think any of the big name retreads would apply, I've never once said that.
However, to say nobody wanted this job because of the perception is not accurate. This final candidate pool was definitely selected over other people with solid resumes.

Considering the situation the Nix program is in I'm not disappointed by the list of finalists. Brannen had a multi-million-dollar settlement with Cincinnati so the GB paycheck might not be as important as the chance to get back on the D1 coaching track.
Ben Johnson has had some great head coaches to learn from, the Bennett's, Bone and Miles. Tharp views the Phoenix as his dream job. He's always done more with less. That's something Green Bay has faced over the years.
I'm actually intrigued by Sundance Wicks and Doug Gottlieb. Wicks has a background in skill development and has a Buzz Williams vibe. Like or hate Williams he has been someone who had success at three D1 schools after being a coaching assistant gypsy at the JUCO and lower level D1 level. How hungry and how much energy is needed to turn things around?
Both Wicks and Gottlieb would probably bring a brother along to help. Another thing about Wick and Gottlieb would be a national network of contacts.
Since I don't have the access to direct interviews or the economic equation I'll defer to Moon on the final choice.

According to Matt norlaner of cbs sports today down to 4. No john Tharpe. Decision expected soon. I know it’s a cbs sports reporter. The other four names are the ones from the Green Bay press gazette article. Brannen, wicks, gottlieb, Johnson.

An intriguing group of candidates…..To paraphrase the line in the movie Anchorman, ‘Will Ryan was a bad choice’…….
As far as John Brannen…..He’s probably the leader in the clubhouse based on his more recent success at NKU and Cincy. If Josh Moon is comfortable with how things ended at Cincy for Brannen, then this could be a home run hire. Now if Brannen ends up being the coach he was accused of being at the end of his Cincy tenure then it may cost Brannen AND Moon their jobs. We don’t need a screamer in the vintage Bob Knight mold in this program; We’ve been thorough enough already as a program and a fan base.
Wicks - I see the comparison to Buzz Williams. A bit of a gypsy even for a college basketball coach. How would he be able recruit? Would he get a bunch of guys from JCs our west and totally ignore in-state talent like TK did in his early years? I see feast or another 3-29 famine with this guy because we know nothing about him.
Ben Johnson - My personal favorite of all the candidates. We truly have not had anyone from the Bennett tree since the failed Mike Heideman era. Do we want to see games in the 50’s again? Since TB left for the UVA job Ben has been exposed to other coaching styles and not locked into a single head coach and philosophy unlike a certain current UW head coach who has been exposed to only a single guy his whole career. Would be interesting to see if Ben can bring in talent from Australia (because of his playing days there and his contacts) to GB. Would be able to keep some of the in-state talent here as well.
Gottlieb - Don’t know what to think of this one. I would ask him, “Why GB?” This could be like a Deion Sanders type hire when he went to Jackson State or end up like the very short and failed tenure of Ed Reed at Bethune-Cookman. How would he recruit talent to GB? Would he take the job only to get cold feet and lean on the ‘spending more time with my family’ excuse a couple weeks later? I know he interviewed for other jobs in the past, but in terms of program and profile, this is the lowest one he has shown interest in.
Tharp - On a local level, this would have been a good story, but Tharp has not done anything of substance at the D2 level. I know he almost got (a low level D3 program) Lawrence to a Final Four but if we are going to the D2 route again, we need someone who has had significant prior D1 experience and/or a slew of D2 titles in tow. Will Ryan’s teams physically looked like they belonged in the WIAC and not the Horizon League. I fear that a Tharp hire would resemble this same scenario in terms of roster but expecting Dick Bennett output and results. We need someone who can recruit athletes. Skill does not do you any good if you are not strong enough to get a rebound or quick enough to get a shot off.

But according to cbs sports Matt norlander. It could be down to four candidates and tharpe is not a candidate now if that means he pulled out I don’t know he just said down 4. Johnson, gottlieb, wicks, Brannen.

With Dayton leading at the half. Can John Brannen leave at any time? Even if they win? I think wicks is a leading candidate given the fact he was at northern state the same time ad josh moon was.

Dayton lost. So John Brannen can leave? Even if Dayton goes to nit?

Dayton lost. So John Brannen can leave? Even if Dayton goes to nit? More importantly, he can interview as a finalist now that he has some time.
