Yesterday I had the Big 10 Network on in the background to pass some time. They were showing a game from February of 2015, Purdue at Indiana. In this game one of Purdue's starting guards and better players, Jon Octeus, was in foul trouble. To fill in his minutes Bryson Scott played and was in the game down the stretch as the point guard. Watching this game made me realize a few things. One, I understand why he is transferring. He pretty much wasn't part of the offense. He was asked to bring the ball up, pass it to the wing and then cut through to the opposite corner. If someone else didn't score he would come to the top and move the ball to the other side. He was only able to go on his own once and he drove to the hoop and kicked to an open shooter. Two, he was an active defender. He picked up full court and was working hard to keep Yogi Ferrell in front of him. That was not an easy task with the speed of Yogi and the ball screens he received. Three, Rece Davis mentioned he had some ball security issues. He did have one turnover on what I thought was a questionable offensive foul call.
His minutes looked like minutes that Tevin Findlay would get for GB last season. In those minutes they are asked to hold down the fort until the starters came back but not do anything stupid. Like Tevin who looks to have more talent than just that, Scott looked like he could play some solid minutes for GB. His brother wasn't as highly regarded and was the MVC freshman of the year I believe.

Speaking of Bryson...

Like I said before -- having a scholarship in hand is a plus for Darner at this time of the year. Most schools are full and so the competition for talent is a bit different.
Scott and his family visited GB more than a month ago. The further a recruit is removed from his official visit the less likely he will commit. It's clear he's still considering options. Scott's been on record with a concern about distance from his Fort Wayne home. IPFW (hometown school) and IUPUI (Indianapolis) have been recruiting him. His brother plays for Evansville. The Purdue transfer likes the style of play Darner will bring to the Nix.
Of the schools under consideration GB offers the best chance to play relatively close to family and play a style that would showcase his talents. That said I'm not Bryson Scott. We just have to wish him the best no matter what.
I have a good feeling about how the final scholarship will be used.

Here's an important footnote to Scott's Jacksonville visit. The head coach and a top assistant are one year removed from similar jobs at IPFW. That school is based in Bryson's hometown.

Scott should really go to UWGB.
Jacksonville is far from home. The coaches must be the attraction there. Otherwise Jacksonville is not a great choice. (They even have a hard freeze every year so there's not even a guarantee of great weather.)

From his options I believe Green Bay is his best option but he appears to be waiting or looking for a better one in his opinion. So at this time I beleive it best to bank the open scholarship for a player next year. If Linc is successful and system as guard friendly as it appears i could see a nice player wanting to come here as a freshman.

I'd opt for a developmental front court player or a solid transfer.

I'd opt for a developmental front court player or a solid transfer. The phear the phoenix blog is reporting that GB is also interested in Jalen Gibson, a 6'8" forward from Detroit. He is long and lean. He looks to do all of his damage around the basket in the limited videos I watched. I agree that Scott seems to be looking at all of his options. With him already having two years in D1 I can see him taking his time to make sure he has the right fit. If he were coming out of HS and didn't commit already I would say GB has no chance given the time lapse.

Assuming Gibson is a 2015 HS graduate.....why the delay or the lack of interest by other D1 schools? This is pretty late in the game for HS recruits. Can he even sign a LOI?

I don't know much but that has never stopped me before. Gibson is listed anywhere from 6'6" to 6'8" and weighs 200 lbs. He looks athletic but doesn't have a lot of range from what I could see. I think teams might see him as a D1 project since he needs to add weight and depending on his actual height maybe some perimeter skills. At this stage in the game he could be an A-Mac replacement in a few years if all goes well.

If Linc is seriously looking at him as a RS candidate since we are loaded in the frontcourt, then maybe he's another A-Mac or the heir apparent to Hurdle.

Its been reported that Jalen Gibson is visiting Green Bay this weekend. I do wonder if Detroit or Oakland looked at him and if they did, why did they pass? As gbbrl97 stated we could RS a player but with all the 5th year seniors transferring it makes me a bit reluctant to RS anyone. I don't like how a mid major makes a player better only to have them leave for what should be their best year.
If he is worth giving the scholarhip to than i have to trust Linc but IMO i think we should bank it.

Why redshirt Gibson? I wouldn't call a combination of Lowe, Uwadiae, Kanter and Hurdle to be "loaded." They are all still essentially developmental guys, even if they are juniors and sophomores. The more big bodies the better imo, especially with the extreme inconsistencies showed by our big guys from last year.

I have seen Gibson, he would be a great last minute addition. He does have a offer from UD, it sounds like he wants to get away. He also had offers from Toledo and was getting recruited hard by Southern Miss. I actually saw the game Gibson played against Deyonta Davis of Muskegon. Davis was a McDonald's All American and Mr. Basketball in Michigan and top 20 recruit nationally going to MSU. Gibson played him straight up and some people thought won the 2nd half battle. He is very athletic, and is a great rebounder. Lots of upside. If you google him, his coach says Gibson is the best mid major steal in the country. His HS coach is Lamonta Stone. Stone has been an assistant coach at Ohio St. and Bowling Green the last 13 years up until this past year to coach his son in HS.
