Ben McCollum did start off slow at Northwest too. Went from being an assistant coach at Emporia State to the head coach at Northwest. Took him a few years then they took off. (I am a Northwest Missouri Alumni btw lol) He was competitive although in his first few years.

I think he meant to quote my post about Bennett having a winning record in year two.

Since there's been talk comparing past coaching records at UW Green Bay I thought I would post this cut and paste. It does not include the Nix first coach, Dave Buss who had an impressive run in the NAIA, NCAA D2 and D1 early days. Also not included was his replacement, Dick Lien whose tenure was highlighted by fainting during his introductory news conference. Ironically, that was the highlight of his time with the Nix. ************************************ Head Coach Mike Heideman's GB record

The 2014 Horizon League Coach of the Year, Wardle led the Phoenix to a 24-7 mark in 2013-14, including a 14-2 league record to claim the regular-season conference title and an automatic bid to the NIT. Highlighted by a 68-55 win at then No. 15 Miami, Wardle's final Green Bay squad followed with a 24-9 record in 2014-15 and earned an at-large selection to the NIT after finishing as runner-up in the Horizon League regular season and postseason tournament.
The youngest head coach in Division I when he took over with the Phoenix, Wardle’s Green Bay teams averaged 19 wins per season while facing stiff competition. After taking on NCAA Tournament teams Marquette, Wisconsin and Virginia during the 2011-12 season, Green Bay knocked off Big East champion Marquette during the 2012-13 campaign and eventual ACC champion Virginia during the 2013-14 season to go along with the 2014 victory at Miami. ************************

I'm a firm believed in success depending on the merging of person, place and time. For GB that happened with Dick Bennett and others at the school who contributed to a winning environment.

Tulsa, I think you are 100% right. Dick Bennett was the right guy at the right time. He came at a time when UWGB was still about 20 years old as a four year institution. The University was a tremendous point of pride for the community. The business and civic leaders at the time, came together to make the University grow and develop. Even finding a unique solution to finance its residence halls. When Bennett came to town, the community embraced his success with open arms.
But now those business and civic leaders are well into their 80s, if they're alive at all. And for the current ones who took their place, the University has always been there. The buildings are 40 years older and look the part. The campus has struggled with enrollment at times. It's just a much different time and place. It just going to be so much harder.
But I will be their tonight rooting them on. Even getting my wife, who is the GB alumnus in the family, to come along. It's going to cost me dinner beforehand, but I can manage that!

Where would the program be if they hired Brad Soderburg instead?
I think lesson learned with going with unproven. If you can get a proven talent that has had some level of success go for it even if it means you’re starting over in a few years because they leave. It’s way better than whatever this is supposed to be

Anyway, I would take a hard look at Pat Juckem as a potential next coach. He is at Washington University in St. Louis now, but prior to that is the coach who dug the UW-Oshkosh program out of obscurity. Prior to that he was at Coe. Lawrence alum.

Ben McCollum from Northwest Missouri State should be the first guy called.
Heck I am an alumni from Northwest Missouri State, let me reach out. Haha

He apparently has turned down overtures from division one programs before because he doesn't want to put himself in a bad situation. My guess is that he is making more money at NW Missouri than Ryan is here too.

NW Missouri St spends $988,000 on basketball. That includes money spent on tuition, housing, travel, staff etc.
Based on that total budget it would be unlikely that McCollum is making more money than GB can (not currently does but can) pay for a coach.

Whenever the time comes I think the posters on this board will be surprised at the candidate pool that this AD would be able to get.
I'd love for people to think just a little bigger for once. This team may not be great but there is a lot of infrastructure in place for a low/mid major to have success. They don't need to hire random D3 guys, though I think this AD would be receptive to some proven D2 coaches.

I just don't think there is much difference between successful division two and division three coaches. Anyway, I just think they need to get someone who is proven to be a winner somewhere.

Maryville, Missouri has a population of 10K during the summer therefore it’s a nice quiet town. Green Bay offers that small town feel that him and family have been so used too. Has recruited the Midwest well, mainly just Iowa, Nebraska and KCMO area. Then keep Brandon Pritzl on the staff for the Wisconsin connections. Other candidate possibly, not sure if he would have interest but Brian Barone the current head coach at SEMO would be a good fit as well. I am just going to bring it up cause no one else has yet (I’m surprised by this). Does Mr. Moon reach out to Gary Grzesk?

I think Gary makes more at Norbert’s than Ryan does here somehow.

Regardless I don’t want Gary. That ship has sailed and he hasn’t done much at Norbert’s recently.
I like going the d-2 route or a high major d-1 assistant route.
But 100 percent agree on having success. Ryan did nothing to earn this job other than his name.
I was fine swinging for the fences but it’s clear it didn’t work so never do that again.
