I'm hoping this can be done soon! Also this is a big opportunity for GB to go to the big dance the next 2 years or longer. Go Phoenix. Also this would be the time to look at a 12 school division (2-6 team divisions in 2013-2014). The top 4 in each have a mini tournament followed by the winners playing for the NCAA berth?

Possibly just a coincidence, but Oakland's new floor at their arena doesnt have the Summit League logo painted on it

I've been thinking about the replacement for Butler, and I'm starting to think there might be an even better option than Oakland. It's a team previously mentioned by gbphoenix1, Belmont. The private school from Nashville gives us many of the positives Oakland would.
Belmont been a regular in the NCAA tournament. They have a longtime coached ensconced in the job he isn't looking to leave. They play in a lesser conference and would likely welcome the opportunity to join the HL. They have a baseball program.
They also do something Oakland doesn't, which is expand the boarders of the HL a little to the south, into the large metropolitan area of Nashville.
Belmont has had an RPI in the 50's each of the last 2 years, and should be very solid again next year. The HL loses name recognition by losing Butler, but wouldn't fall in overall ranking if it added Belmont.

Belmont expands the Horizon League significantly to the south, and that's why they're not a better 10th team than Oakland. The closest team to Belmont is Wright State, more than 330 miles due north northeast. That kind of distance is just too much to take. At 10 teams, you're asking schools to fly twice for travel partners, which adds significant cost to programs, especially considering the cost to Nashville is more than Dayton or Detroit and your program is the one with the shallowest pockets. The GB athletics staff has had to be very creative to get around those financial shortcomings - are you sure you want to ask them to add a team and pay for travel out of the middle of nowhere? Well, nevermind that, because while Belmont may not be a better 10th team, they're a much better 12th team. Travel partners: Green Bay-Milwaukee Loyola-UIC Valpo-Wright State Cleveland State-Youngstown State Detroit-Oakland Belmont-Murray State Yup.

Interested in thoughts on adding a team to Horizon league. Would Horizon league be interested in joining with Missouri Valley Conference? Would NCAA give them two at large BIDs?

GBBB, any inside info/updates on what these moves are?
As for the question about the MVC. I can't see the MVC doing that. I hate to say it but top to bottom they have a better league. Cherry picking a few HL teams would make sense but not all of them.
Depending on what happens with the HL, GB should be trying to bolster their athletic budget to try and earn a MVC invite. If Creighton ever left the MVC, GB would be a nice fit as a replacement provided they get serious about athletics across the board and not just in hoops.

I dont have any insider information, but someone posted this on the Cleveland State board (it has since been deleted). It could just be message board fodder so probably take it with a grain of salt, but its fun to speculate. As someone who has a contact high up in the Valpo administration I can't reveal exactly what deal has been made for 2013-2014. But I believe you will be extremely excited about which schools will be joining the Horizon League. The goal was to get 3 schools with at least 2 of them with baseball. The reason it won't be announced until the end of the basketball season, probably around HL tournament time, is to distance the announcement from Butler's leaving so the 2 events won't be as linked as it appears. But I think you will find that all 3 of the schools together make up for Butler leaving.

GBBB, any inside info/updates on what these moves are? I could make some very probable speculation, but I'm going to respect the league's desire for secrecy. If another league found out too early that a member is leaving that league would likely ban them from their league tournament. That could severely interfere with the programs momentum. We don't want to add a school with a stunted basketball program. The schools the HL are looking at have strong basketball programs. As for the MVC, it's a great league, but is it still a great league if Creighton left? Then the increased travel and lack of rivals becomes a bigger question mark. Now, if a different member left then it becomes extremely enticing... However, with what the HL is working on, combined with games in Milwaukee and Chicago, the prime recruiting area for the basketball program, it would be tough to part with the HL, unless GB entered a league with a real TV deal.

On Twitter -- Evansville, Oakland and Belmont? I'd like IUPUI in that mix for travel cost purposes. It would also be nice to keep that presence in Indianapolis. Belmont is in Nashville which is a bit of trip.

People just gotta watch what they put in print. especially with conference alignment. Schools don't want to tarnish their relationship with current conferences. If someone is going to post something, stand behind it 100 percent, or don't say it at all. It is one thing to speculate, or say what would be a good idea, but to put schools on the spot as "their contacts" say this is going to happen, is just wrong. This got to the point that an AD had to step up today and deny it.

That's all PantherU was doing was speculating. He put it on Twitter and Facebook and explained his reasoning. Got totally misrepresented when they say he "reported" it.
