LeCrone said something on Friday that I hope rings true. He didn't say it about GB as much as he said it about what fans want to see in the NCAA tournament. He said a lot of fans tune in early to see the upsets/Cinderella's and then by the end of the tournament they tune in to see the heavyweights battle it out for the title.
Along those lines I am hopeful for GB. The Cinderella teams are good for business. When they roll "one shining moment" at the end of the tournament it shows the Bryce Drew 3 pointer and the dunk city highlights as well as the lead up to the big boys battling for the trophy. I am not saying GB is going to win a game or be the next dunk city. I am saying nobody cares if a high major gets the last spot as an 11, 12 or 13 and then gives another high major a run for their money or even wins the game. That impacts the pools but it isn't a true Cinderella that really gets a buzz going. So looking at what Lunardi has for his last 4 in he has BYU, Dayton, St. Joe's and Arkansas. I am not saying any of them are not worthy, in fact I am sure they are. I am saying nobody around the country cares if Arkansas gets in and then loses right away. Heck nobody will remember if they get in and win a game. It is just one high major beating another. So along those lines I would love to see the committee throw GB in that spot. Let them go to Dayton and play their way in. Last year in Dayton LaSalle beat Boise State and St. Marys beat Middle Tenn St. LaSalle went on to the Sweet 16 and St. Marys lost by two to Memphis. Both of those results are good for business.
I know it is a stretch what I am proposing but if GB has to go to Dayton and play Dayton I will take it. Everyday there is a list of games that help GB if the results go a certain way. For example tonight if Stanford, Georgetown, Baylor, Oregon, Oklahoma State or Colorado lose it pushes them that much further down the bracket if they are on the bubble. It puts them that much closer to nobody caring if they make it or not. It makes it that much easier to maybe repeat last year and put a several mid majors in and let them battle it out to see who can play for that one shining moment.
By the way last year, Boise State, St. Marys and Middle Tennessee had good RPI's but they didn't have any/many great wins. Certainly nothing that would jump out and say put this team in. I may be setting myself up for disappointment but I am no longer accepting that the only result is an NIT home game. I am hoping that I have to make the 6 hour drive to Dayton and take it from there.
