Finally a game I can get to in about 10 minutes of driving! Is anyone else going?
I thought milwaukee was dead in the water after getting whipped at home by CSU. I don't know how good Oakland actually is but uwm bounced back and earned a 9 point road win last night. So maybe uwm isn't as dead as I thought.
I know this is a rivalry game and as a fan it is easy to get caught up in that. In the past I think some of the Phoenix teams have been caught up in that as well. I think this Phoenix is different. I really believe that they have a strong chance to play this game as just another game on the march towards their March goals. If they can play their game without getting caught up in emotion and with milwaukee having struggles to close out games I really feel this game should be a Phoenix win. A win on Sunday puts a little space in the standings while a loss really tightens things up early.

Yes Sunday's going to be a tough game. I thought Oakland was better but watched the 2nd half and they were very undisplined. 2 or 3 on 1 break and they pull up and take a 3 and miss. Oakland is all about 3's and if they're hitting probaly very tough. Milwaukee has inside and outside game and appear to be much better overall. @scottvenci: GB forward Alfonzo McKinnie (knee) will not play at UW-Milwaukee on Sunday. Time to start thinking about a medical redshirt? He was suppose to be back right after Alaska tournament? Back in Oct. when he had surgery it was 4-6 weeks! Green Bay (12-3) @ UW-Milwaukee (12-5) When: Sunday, 1/12, 1:00 Where: US Cellular Arena, Milwaukee TV: Time Warner Cable SportsChannel (HD 1332)
My favorite game of the year. Green Bay won at Milwaukee by 20 last year. This game pits 2 very different teams with somewhat similar records. Both have 12 wins, but Green Bay has 7 wins by 16 points or more, Milwaukee just 1. The 2 have faced 4 like opponents (Tennessee Tech, Wisconsin, YSU, Cleveland St.). Green Bay's average margin versus that 4 was +12, Milwaukee's was -10.
I'll predict this game is fairly competitive in the 1st half, then GB goes on one of its patented runs to start the 2nd half, and goes on to win by double digits for the 9th time this year.
A road win would boost Green Bay's RPI from 54 to up into the top 50. It would also continue to reinforce Green Bay as the superior in-state program. A lot is at steak in this one, great that it is on TV.

I'll be at the game Sunday. Glad this one is downtown at the Cell. Last year was a blast just because GB won by 20 at UWM on national TV. The Klotsche really is awful. It was kind of cool with all the students packed in there I guess, but it just felt like a high school game with how small the place is. Three blowout wins against the Panthers last year was amazing. I'm expecting a GB win and a great time at Major Goolsbys before and after the game!

Game Day!! I'm psyched for this one. I actually love that Milwaukee has filled up on cupcakes so they could come in with an impressive 12-5 record. Who cares if their Out-of-Conferense strength of schedule is 274th in the country? It's not like they are trying to put together a resume to get an at-large birth to the big dance like the Phoenix are.
Good peice by Scott Venci again today. Green Bay's defensive dominance is somewhat overlooked simply because so many media types still judge defense by how many points a team gives a per game. That's a stat largely dependant on a teams pace of play. Green Bay plays fast, so Defensive Points Per Game won't show what they're doing defensively. For the team to be 7th in the nation in Field Goal % Defense makes you think the Bennett days are back. I thought the team would be outstanding defensively, but I thought McKinnie would be a huge part of that. Alec Brown has picked up the slack, he's been absolutly awesome protecting the rim.
Against Milwaukee, the defense needs to do 2 things, play strong post defense, and get out on the 3 point shooters. Milwaukee's success is handcuffed to their 3 point shooting, which explains there inconsistency from game to game.
The other stat that jumps out at me for Green Bay is that they're in the top 20 nationally in assists. I think many who haven't seen GB assume this teams offenses is nothing but 1 on 1 play, simply because this team is full of athletes. The biggest improvement this season compared to past years is the ball movement. Everyone is not only willing to pass, but passes with a purpose.I love to see a pass that sets up the pass that will get the assist. The off the ball movement is strong, and is the key to any strong passing team. The cohesiveness improves with each game.
Green Bay got lots of help yesterday and saw its RPI jump up to 45th. Milwaukee is at a respectable 118th for now. Every game counts, there is no way for Green Bay to make up for a bad day when building its resume from this point foward. Gotta have this one, and I'd like to get it with an exclamation point.

Nix were down 22-19, then their talent started to overwhelm. They go into the half up 42-38. Look for a big 2nd half run.

82-82 going to OT. Milwaukee out played us most of the 2nd half. Milwaukee up 7 with 3:29 left then the last 3 minutes were all GB to tie game, we had a chance with 1 second but it wouldn't go down. Go Phoenix! GB wins 93-86 Sykes has career high 34 points Brown with 19 points fouls out with a couple seconds left in OT. Mays 11, Fouse 11, and Lowe 8 points. Rebs GB43-31, TO's pretty much even, Steals GB7-3 and Blocks 7-1 GB. WTG men nice finish. sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/green-bay-phoenix-milwaukee-panthers-201401120654/Yes Milwaukees Jordan Aarons had 26 with I think 19 in 2nd half? Like Shooting theJ said he was on fire shooting 4-5' behind the arc.

GB laid an egg to start the second half, but fought back hard late, and calmly controlled overtime to get the win.

Milwaukee's Jordan was rediculous for a stretch to single-handedly give the Panthers the lead. He eventually came back to Earth, but the damage was done. Senior Kyle Kelm was solid too. Foul trouble on Brown and Mays killed GB's interior defense until they came back in. Sykes was under control scoring late, he is so reliable.
Tevin Findlay gave the team some energy off the bench, that was a nice surprise.

Well it certainly feels good to walk out of there with a W when it felt like victory slipped through their fingers at one point. To go from up 11 to down 9 to winning by 7 is a wild ride.
It also keeps me from having to answer questions from the Milwaukee fan base (both online and in the stands) about items such as how good GB really is, can they win a road game or "how demoralizing it must be to have your best team in 20 years and still not be good enough to make it?"
As for the game itself it certainly wasn't a defensive clinic and the style of play suited Milwaukee better. I thought it spots GB applied some defense but they didn't get any turnovers out of their 3/4 court trap (did force 1 jump ball though), they had trouble stopping guys individually such as J. Aaron and in several cases they had trouble getting matched up in transition.
I thought Love came in and eventually slowed Aaron down enough. I totally agree that the fouls on Brown and Mays changed the dynamic of the game. That is where a healthy McKinnie really makes a difference. With that said Lowe gave some good minutes. I also thought that Tiby/Brown foul situation was a joke. Tiby runs in to him and then flops on the ground. That seemed to rattle Alec for a bit. He did recover and made a few huge plays late but he did have book end scoring as he started and finished well but the middle was a problem.
It was great to see Tevin Findlay get some burn. I thought he played solid defense and he made some plays on offense. Plus he took the minutes that Fulton or Humphrey would have had in the past. I am perfectly fine with that.
The rebound difference was huge, one of the better plays was Fouse up high for a board and immediately hitting Mays on the baseline for a layup.
Sykes was huge, POW again!?! He makes it look effortless. I am sure he wishes he had his 3 missed ft's in the 1st half back but other than that he was an all around stud.
Lastly, the locals can say what they want about Wardle and his coaching but he was in it today. He was loud, never lost his focus and really helped the guys get back on track. By comparison I would have thought Rob Jeter was a paying customer in a good seat. Other than to get on the refs he really didn't have a lot going on from the bench. I really think the guys feed off of Wardle and that he finally has the guys he needs to show his style of play.

The fans on the Milwaukee message board are funny. Apparently Alec should have had 10 fouls and he gets "NBA Treatment". I would say it's almost the opposite of that and that he gets unfairly officiated because of his size. But that's how homer glasses work I guess.
Great win by the whole team. Obviously Keifer stepped up huge when we had some foul trouble, but the freshman gave great minutes. Alec stepped up in OT and Fouse and Mays were there usual selves making big time plays when we needed them.

That was a gutsy team performance that should send a message. Team chemistry is the best in years. A healthy McKinnie and this team could make a deep post season run. Sykes has earned a place on the UW-Green Bay all time team. Could you imagine what a Sykes/Tony Bennett backcourt could have achieved?
