The program and community can keep going on as is or they can decide with this hire to elevate to a higher level.
I agree with Tulsa, success from this starting point sets the next coach up.

The only issue is how much leeway does the next coach get? Realistically speaking, we probably are not going to win another game this year. This team has somehow regressed even further than earlier in the year, and will likely end with 2 wins. So, what is “success” in the next 2-3 years? 5 wins? 8 wins? Middle of the pack in the conference? I think the bar has been set so low that it’s really going to take a miracle to see anything substantial in the next 5-10 years. I doubt another coach, even if they’re as abysmal as Will, would get fired mid-year again. I want the university to clearly state their vision for this program moving forward, because currently, there isn’t one at all.

With the portal and keeping some of the guys they have the ramp up time is much quicker than people may want to believe.
With the right person this team looks solid in 2 years.
They have so much more going for it than people want to give them credit for.

Kennesaw State's record since hiring Amir Abdur-Rahim
1-28 5-19 13-18 18-6, tied for the lead in their conference
You don't need a 5-10 year timeframe. You will be able to tell if a guy can coach pretty early, and you will see progress within a year or two.

Transfer portal will be an asset, most likely, but even hitting on that is far from a guarantee. Further, positive linear growth is never guaranteed, either. Just because Cade is playing fairly well now does not mean he will make leaps in years 3 and 4. Same goes for the others. What goes into your recipe for success if you think two years is plausible for a turnaround?

What goes into your recipe for success if you think two years is plausible for a turnaround? The team doesn't have any superstars and none of the existing guys may be that level of guy in the future. They do have some guys that we could say are role players on a good team. Hiring a coach that can get the kind of players needed or has a system that does more with less is totally possible. I know GB doesn't spend enough money. I believe that will be addressed in the near future. Other than money what physical asset is missing compared to other mid majors? I didn't say winning the league in 2 years, I said solid. That is 15+ wins and having us feel like there is a future. That isn't a ten year build with the right hire.

What does being a catalyst mean?
:a person or event that quickly causes change or action. the disintegration of the program was a catalyst for reform.
In college basketball the catalyst can be a single individual. That includes a coach, player or dare I say booster?

In the current landscape, one might say well-funded boosters with well-designed NIL offers are by far the biggest catalyst of all.

I’m hoping they get Coach K to come out of retirement or maybe Bo Ryan.
Worst case scenario I think Dick Vitale makes a surprise return to coaching for the Fighting Phoenix

Can you believe the guy who caused all this got a raise and hired on at Akron?

Can you believe the guy who caused all this got a raise and hired on at Akron? I get more pissed off at Charles Guthrie (for firing Linc ina COVID year in May) for each loss. Granted Linc did not endear himself to the GB community but at least they were playing above .500 basketball during his tenure. Can we have Ken Bohtof back? He was the last competent AD we had.

Josh Moon is very competent and he has it in him to turn this around. If you don’t believe me, come to the event in Milwaukee on Monday. Lastly is it golf season yet?

You don’t coach a half court shot in but this is great to see.
Barone needs to get an interview and a fair shot at this job.

That train left several years ago, a missed opportunity at the times for both the school and coach. Both to blame.

Guthrie gets a lot of blame but don't discount Gillespie's hand in all of this too.
