"...doesn't have much coaching experience but would have interest in leading the Phoenix." Until told otherwise this interest appears to be one sided and not from the Nix. I get that GB has done some things that doesn't exactly instill confidence in everyone but in this case it doesn't appear to be GB doing the outreach. I will echo the sentiment here though, he should not be a candidate. To be clear, embarrassing for the Press-Gazette. Not UWGB. Based on the choice of words the GBPG must have some information that Gottlieb actually wants the job. It isn't exactly click bait when it is behind a paywall and the lead in picture is the AD. If that is a made up name to throw on the list then that is a totally different story. Just for fun, lets spin this as the job does hold coast to coast appeal!!

Bradley assistant Jimmie Foster.
Don’t be surprised to hear this name as a head coach candidate.

Last time Jimmie Foster was in the top four of candidates he was going to bring former Phoenix player Ramon Fletcher as a assistant I think it would be great to have a former uwgb player as a assistant turner botz is a head coach at a Appleton high school. Cody Schwartz has spent time as a Wisconsin high school assistant.

JR, Brian, and Donte are the only realistic candidates from this list.

Brian Barone would be intriguing if he truly wants the job. If he is making $190k at SIUE, GB would have to come in at $250K+ to probably get him to move. SIUE has a chance to keep building in what is now a truly terrible OVC without Belmont and Murray State (and others). SIUE beat Saint Louis on the road this year but are now on a four game losing streak.
This year a middle of the pack Horizon team would probably win the OVC.

Can I just ask why does it seem to be such a pre-requisite that any candidate have some connection to Wisconsin in some way shape or form? That Twitter link that USCG just posted was a prime example - if you didn't know better it would appear to be that it is an absolute "must-have" - and I'm asking why? We just compiled a roster with many guys with some connection to Wisconsin, be it transfering back in to the state or whatever, and damn that isn't working out too well.
Maybe we should get some person with a super strong connection to the basketball inner-circles of Chicago or something that would serve us better. I feel like let's look outside the box and find whoever can recruit awesome players (not just Wisconsin players) and turn this disaster around.

I really don’t think GB is the type of job he would leave his current situation for. He’s clearly got something going in Edwardsville, why would he leave that to take over the 362nd ranked team in the country. He’s a tourney appearance away from being a prime candidate for any MVC job that opens up, especially if Illinois st needs a coach within a couple years (being a former assistant there).

This time around, I’m honestly hoping GB can just get the “sexiest” name out there to take over the program. Whether that means trying to get one of the tv guys like Tom Crean, LaVall Jordan, or Steve Wojciechowski to come here. Or just a guy with high level coaching experience like Cuonzo Martin from Missouri, Larry Krystkowiak from Utah (also former Bucks player and assistant coach), Jim Christian from Boston College (had success at Ohio and Kent st), John Brannon from Cincy and NKU, or Joe Dooley from East Carolina and FGCU. You could even shoot for the stars are try to get a Rick Pitino like hire looking for a rehab job, like Chris Mack or Will Wade (both are highly unlikely, I know). Hell I’d even get totally crazy and look at John Mosely who’s the coach in Netflix’s last chance U and has a record of 214-55 at East LA College. Would he want to leave LA to come to cold ass Wisconsin? Probably not, but we’ve tried the successful D2 guy and the guy with local name recognition, so in my make believe fantasy world, I’d love for us to get one of these guys. Again, I know many if not all of these names are unrealistic and I have no idea if any of them could be successful here, but just thought I’d throw them out there.

I wouldn't read too much into it. I would much rather hear what a coach says about how they would strategically use the portal and how he envisions the role of NIL within the program rather than if he knows the head coach at Neenah High School.

Barone knows what is possible with GB and that is a lot more than what is possible at SIUE. He is in his 6th year of building that program up. Even after reaching levels they haven't seen before they still are mid pack in the OVC and not relevant in the larger metro area. It would take less time to achieve success and have a higher ceiling for the right hire in GB. Also, Illinois State just hired a new coach this past season.

UWGB definitely has a higher ceiling than SIUE. But does it have a higher ceiling than some MVC or MAC job that may open up? That's the concern.

That’s why I qualified it by saying “couple years”, ISU won’t be making a coaching change in the imminent future. And I’ll be honest, it’s been a week or two since I’ve looked at the OVC standings, didn’t realize SUIE is on a 4 game skid and thought they were in a better position. If this is where they finish the season, he won’t be getting any better offers, and I honestly wouldn’t be interested in him coming to GB. If he turns things around and finishes near the top, it’s a different story, but I think he needs to do more for me to think he’ll turn GB around if he gets the job. He’s done a fine job at Edwardsville and I wouldn’t completely hate the hire, but I feel there’s candidates out there with better resumes.

UWGB definitely has a higher ceiling than SIUE. But does it have a higher ceiling than some MVC or MAC job that may open up? That's the concern. The MAC is in an interesting position with their current coaches. Ball State, Miami OH and Western Michigan are in year one with their coaches. Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan and Northern Illinois are in year two with their coaches. Akron and Kent are having success and could lose their coaches. Ohio has had recent success with their coach. Toledo and TK seem happy to just keep things as is. That leaves only Buffalo and Bowling Green as not having new people and not having lots of success and maybe making a move. I think lots of coaches think they should always move up a level when they can. Rob Jeter didn't do that for example and it cost him in the end. I don't think Barone has done enough to get an MVC job now and there might not be a MAC job that makes sense. Getting to a better program and rebuilding that is a good career move. I agree with the other post though, without a tournament appearance it may not be perceived as a big time hire by those waiting to see some signs of life from the program.

This is the most important coaching hire in the school's history since Dick Bennett came to town. The future of the program is at stake. It is a make or break career decision for the AD and the coach who is brought in. Those with a weak heart and fear the challenge of a team at rock bottom and in emotional distress need not apply. Warning, you are looking at a high risk, high reward job (not in pay) -- you win here you will be a "made man" in the 21st Century college coaching profession.
