Is anyone else worried Green Bay will end up folding as a d-1 program at this rate? They shouldn't be one anyway based on their enrollment numbers. If they do go back to d-2 or become d-3 to me it would be like them becoming extinct. As a uwo grad I had no interest in d-3 sports. I hate to say it but I would probably stop going to games and maybe even following them. D-1 is all that matters to me.

And why doesn't the Green Bay packers step in and help out? I thought they had such a great relationship with uwgb. A million bucks to them is nothing. Every little bit helps. Having a good basketball program is good for the community.

Yes it's only $250K but GB has one of the smallest athletic budget's in the HL. Getting permission for out of state travel could cut down on recruiting. We also don't know how UWGB's 4 million in cut's this year and 3+ million next year will impact the Athletic Dept? This is only the proposed State budget so it could get better or worse?

I know the budget is small for UWGB across every aspect of the school. I won't say $250,000 doesn't matter but in the grand scheme that is not make or break money. This is just a standard response to any cut. The spokesman for the university can't say we will be just fine because it allows one to assume further cuts will be okay as well. I understand and appreciate that faculty and staff fighting hard for resources but if 250 grand is really all that separates GB from not being a competitive athletic department we have bigger problems than outside shooting percentage.
I agree with Ram, my interest would diminish almost entirely if they were playing D2 or D3 sports.

I could never see them dropping back a division. Even if they did I would not lose interest merely because they aren't playing with the top schools in the nation. For as much crap as people give D2 and D3 athletics, those kids play their hearts out and make for some outstanding games. Hell, half of the D3 kids could probably play D1. I've seen a few transfers into the MWC from D1, most recently some kid from Western Michigan to Ripon and he did next to nothing. Cerroni came to SNC and played very well, but he was not even the best player on the team, let alone the conference.
As for that assface Walker, he is singlehandedly trying to destroy any progress this state has ever made. Hopefully the students and faculty can convince the lawmakers to push back against these asanine budget cuts. Its not looking too good considering half of our state representatives wouldn't know their ass from a hole in the ground. Hopefully in the future we can get some real representatives who actually care about meaningful things instead of mines and taxbreaks for millionaires and reinvest in education, and ultimately re-grant the funding which we can put back into the basketball program.

The whole reason I like gb is we can see them Play and potentially beat teams like wiscosnin or marquette without driving two hours. If they go down a Division or two that would never happen except in exhibitions. You can also kiss national coverage goodbye and watching on espn ever. crowd sizes won't sniff four thousand even on a weekend
That is why I get so angry the last few years when gb doesn't make it because they could knock off a Baylor or Oklahoma in the tourney. They belong there budget or no budget.
New Orleans went from a d-1 to a d-3 a few years back however now they are back to d-1 somehow again so it can sadly happen

The new UWGB Chancellor that started this past summer, Gary Miller, is a big college basketball fan and has said GB is committed to D1 athletics. Of course, that was before the Governor announced the cuts to the UW System. But I don't think there is any real chance of GB dropping down. Here's his answer when he was asked about it in September: Q: How valuable to you believe Division 1 athletics are and what can be done to improve Green Bay's athletic budget, which is the worst in the Horizon League?A: Well it's the lowest in the Horizon League (laughs). I'm familiar with that situation, my previous institution was the lowest in the Colonial Athletic Association too. We had the highest number of championships. One of the things we have made clear, and I've made clear and I'd be glad to make clear to the readers, is there are only 4 division 1 athletic schools in Wisconsin. Three of them are in the system: Madison, Milwaukee, us, and of course there's Marquette. That is not going to change while I'm here. That is not a discussion we are having on campus to get rid of athletics or to downgrade, we will have division 1 athletics and the reason is that it is an enormous advantage to us. For people like me who are out in the community all the time, people are very interested in Phoenix athletics. And it's an athletic town. So we will use it to build the reputation of the institution and to help us find resources for it and for other actives that we are doing. We have a relatively new athletic director who is great. She knows what to do. She's been here less than a year and she reports directly to me and we have conversations all the time about what we're doing to support athletics and we've made some moves in that regard. We will invest in it, we have to invest in it. We have some facilities plans we are contemplating as well as some other things. So, I'm excited about Phoenix athletics. Don't expect us to add football though (laughs) Topic from September: phearthephoenix.proboards.com/thread/439/new-chancellor

FYI, if you drop out of D-1 you have to go down to D-3 and work your way back up.

I don't see them dropping down a level anytime soon. The money isn't tight enough for that.
Watching a team full of Kam Cerroni's wouldn't interest me if they were D3. They might play hard but I want to see guys making high level plays. What is cool about being a GB fan is they play hard at this level and they play high level basketball. People around the state do not realize there is only a small gap of separation from the level GB is playing at right now to the big time of the Big East or Big Ten like the two main stream schools in the state play in. I take pride in knowing that in the right circumstances little underrated GB can compete with and in some cases win at that level even if most of the state doesn't care or understand it.
