Important game for the Phoenix not to just win, but make a statement. Drake has a new coaching staff that has begun to recruit Wisconsin heavily. The phoenix need to show the massive difference in the quality of these 2 programs, and right now the gap is huge. Drake has really struggled. Should be a fun way to kick off a Saturday night.

I was thinking the exact same thing. There aren't many players in Wisconsin that can play GB's style but the kids that can (Wampler) should not think Drake is a viable basketball alternative. Drake is really struggling this year. This is a total trap game for GB, they can not get caught up in win yesterday and overlook a team with a 1-7 record.

On top of that, it's finals week, so another distraction. Hopefully a loud crowd today to push them through it. The push for an at-large bid needs a long win streak.

Pretty good 1st half. First 15 minutes of 2nd half were awful, poor ball movement, too much 1 on 1 type play. The last 5-6 minutes they did a good job of closing the game and let Sykes rest. What was up with Mays, that was as poorly as I've ever seen him play....

What was up with Mays, that was as poorly as I've ever seen him play.... Yes he does not seem to be playing at the same level as last year. On that note prior to the Miami game I was very unimpressed with C Love this year but he had another good game. He's always attacked on defense but this is 2 games in a row he's been attacking on offense, keep it up. We need 2-3 players to get in double figures besides Sykes. Fouse and Lowe played good and the 2 Freshmen got plenty of minutes. Sykes is just Sykes and seems to always be good. He was really lighting it up on 3's. Big game on defense really helpes our offense. I found the stats. sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/drake-bulldogs-green-bay-phoenix-201412130652/It was sloppy with turnovers and another bad FT% night. But rebounds, 3 point% and steals were great.

This game was a good example of defense leading to offense. To start the game Drake was going zone after made baskets and man after a miss. Obviously zone is a bit of an issue for GB especially a sagging zone by just getting defensive stops GB changed the Drake defensive flow into something that was better for them. After awhile I was distracted and stopped paying attention to when Drake changed defenses once GB had a bigger lead. Down the stretch when Drake had it to 12 and Sykes came out of the game Fouse and Love each scored due to defense and transition baskets. This game really showed if the defense is the calling card for GB to compete and win.
Drake fans who watched online were probably unimpressed with GB. GB is one of those teams you have to see in person to appreciate. The GB defense really didn't allow Drake to do to much. Love, Sykes, Fouse and Francis were getting their hands on balls all game and because of length/quickness really didn't allow any penetration. In the zone Drake was working hard to get corner 3's and while they got a few GB closed out a lot of them. Coach Wardle is like a 6th player on the floor, he is so loud and constantly active with instructions. He is one of the few coaches I notice directing traffic every possession the entire shot clock on both sides of the ball.
Anyway it was good to see Sykes hit from deep. It was good to see McKinnie get loose for a few dunks (he elevated quickly on those). It was good to see Fouse look for half court offense to complement the scoring that comes from his defense. On that topic he knocked down several free throws as well. Plus Love with another solid all around game.
Up next is Morehead State. I saw they lost to Ohio State yesterday. Beyond the highlights of OSU dunking a lot I don't know much.

We have season tickets 5 rows behind the visitors bench so we get to talk with their fans. Last night the ones I talked with really were impressed with GB and expect them to make a little noise in the NCAA. Their words not mine that's to far away. Right now they're going through what we went through 5 yrs ago with a new Coach and 3-4 players leaving with the old Coach. They are a lot more excited about their future after this year. Feel they have 3 recruits for next year that will help right away. Wanted to talk about Sykes and just amazed with his quickness at both ends of the floor. They also thought 2 of his fouls were bad calls and seemed to be big fans of his.

I love that Green Bay was able to build the lead late while Sykes sat with 4 fouls. Love's driving opened up shots for teammates all day. An interested and effective look was Francis in the high post versus zone. On the negative side Greg Mays had a dreadful day to forget.
GB shut down Wisconsin native Reed Timmer, who they didn't recruit. Another Drake freshman, Ore Arengunde, was recruited by GB, and he looked impressive.
Relieving to avoid the let down, now time to get ready for Morehead State on Wednesday.
