Why wasn't this guy covering the Phoenix more in the past decade. Great article.
One thing I've been telling people is with Keifer taking off this year it took some of the defensive focus off brown and makes it easier for him to score.
Kind of goes both ways when brown goes to the perimeter opposing centers have to follow him out there opening it up for Keifer to drive and one less opposing shot blocker to worry about.

I've always viewed Alec Brown as a work in progress and boy has there been progress.

Brown has contributed since day one with improvement each and every year. The scouts should like that he is only 21 years old and there is still room for improvement. Sykes and Brown complement each other very well and this year have a good supporting cast.

Him and I were in the same class, seniors now, and have the exact same birthday, July 23rd, but I am a year older. I always thought it was unfair that I got a year on him, but he got a foot on me. But I always thought being that younger will do nothing but benefit him in the long run.

Some of my alumni friends who are casual fans of the program are quick to get on Alec. They might see a few games a year at most and are quick to dismiss him if they see one bad game. To me he is the second best player ever at GB behind Tony B. He does a lot on the court, he scores in a lot of different ways and he anchors a really good defense.
If fans want see some "stiffer" 7'0 mid major players take a look at UC Irvine. They have a 7'0", 7'2" and 7'6"/290 LBS guy. They are all young but only the 7'6" guy can play but he is probably always going to be really behind Alec in terms of skill.
I don't want Alec to miss time with this shoulder injury but if he does I think fans will see the difference he makes.

I started following the team in 2007 when I came to UWGB so my GB basketball history isn't very lengthy. A question I have for the longer time fans has to do with what gbphoenix1 posted above. Where does Alec rank among the GB greats? I think Tony Bennett is the clear #1 but after that, where does AB rank with Nordgaard or Logan Vander Velden or some of the other great GB players?

Tony is the clear number one that I can remember paying attention to. Anything before him was before my time. Really Tony was before my time, I was on campus at the end of Jeff Nordgaard's time though.
Jeff was amazing as an offensive player. He could score at will by the end of his time in GB. I put Alec ahead because Alec with his size and mobility is really well rounded player on both ends. He isn't beating Jeff in his prime in a shooting contest but Alec impacts the game in more ways.
Logan was a big guy who could shoot and made a little name for himself for that. His best year was like 10pts and 4 rebounds though.
Schachtner and Tillema could score at a high rate, Evans stuffed the defensive stats but only two other players stand out to me in the time I have watched as top of the program. Rahmon Fletcher and Keifer Sykes. They both get to the rim despite their size, they both make plenty of tough jumpers, they both get steals and assists. Sykes has an extra element of toughness and athletic ability that I think will make him number two all time after he has had 4 full years of development.

In the first two years of the Nix program they had a 6-4 juco player named Ray Willis. He was an amazing talent out of Chicago. Willis was an All State player and juco All American out of Hutchinson, Kansas.

They listed Fletcher at 5'9" but he was probaly closer to 5'7". Keifer is a true 5'10" maybe 11". The difference between them is Sykes leaping ability and how many rebounds and assists Keifer gets. Fletcher was a better outside shooter but Keifer is more athletic and will get my nod as the 2nd best guard to play for the Phoenix. He would have to really shoot the lights out as a Sr. to get a shot at #1.
Alec is by far the best center we ever had. Logan 2 and maybe Ripley 3rd.
Norguard would be my #1 forward, followed by Schachter, Willis, and Tillema.
Mendaburo (I know it's spelled wrong) was a unbeleivable passer and rebounder and a true point guard sorry we only had him a couple of years. He could thread a pass that even the guy getting it was suprised.
Gary Grezk was the best defensive Guard.
Defensive forwards would include Evans and Fouse. Fouse has a chance to be better because he's as good as Evans was already.
I think it's hard to compare a Guard to a Center or Forward but a Center can be a game changer more than any other position. Also if you don't have a great Guard the Center will never get the ball! So I think we're back to the Chicken and the Egg. lol
I'm sure we missed a lot of very good players so chime in. Better yet can Mods start this as a new thread?

I have been incredibly happy with the articles that Scott venci has written about Green Bay basketball and look forward to his articles. Last year when I saw a headline I debated whether I wanted to read it.
So if Venci reads this board, I would like to say thank you for all of the positive and informative articles.
