Between Alec Brown and Kiefer Sykes they've been named player of the week a total of 5 times this season. I'm just guessing but that's probably more times this season than all of last season for GB players(excluding freshman honors)? Congrats on all the hard work men. This is just the beginning of a great year. Also GB is rated #8 in latest Mid-Major poll today.

Would rather have him score 40 against Fairfield or 20 against Wisconsin? Or maybe the better question is would you rather have him score 2 against Fairfield and 20 against Wisconsin? He plays so small in big games.

He plays so small in big games. Of course I would rather have had him score 20 against Wisconsin. I really think the team is just learning how to win and how good they can be. I beleive in the past if they could win 2-3 in a row they were happy(complacent). Up until this year 15 wins and 15 losses were ok. Now they have to learn 5-7 wins in a row is expected. New expectations and a lot more pressure. They need that long winning streak to prove themselves. We'll see if they are ready for the big time or just pretenders. If they are ready, 2 maybe 3 league losses or better yet none. I think if they play up to potenial the NCAA is they only place to go and any thing else is failure. I think they can do it but they still have to prove it day in and day out not just 1 game.

He plays so small in big games. Nonsense, Brown has come up big in important games in the past against Wisconsin, Marquette and Butler. He has consistently outplayed the Marquette big men and this year Wisconsin specifically game planned to stop Brown, getting an assist from the refs with several phantom foul calls limiting him to 18 minutes. His previous high was 28 points against Milwaukee. Some of his biggest contributions are defensive, Kaminsky did most of his damage this year with Brown on the bench.

I did some number crunching for Alec. I looked at his games based on points, boards and blocks against teams which were from better conferences than the HL, had legit big guys, were named Butler or took place in post season. It looks like he has been solid with a few outliers either way. What jumped out the most to me was his blocks were way down in these games.
As a freshman I looked at San Diego St, Wisconsin, Butler, Southern Illinois, Marquette, Duquesne and Wyoming. He averaged 9.1/5.8/1.1 in these games with his best game being 18/8/2 against the Badgers. In his last 6 games of that season he averaged 14/6.6/1.5 so he really came on strong.
As a sophomore I looked at Duquesne, Wyoming, Indiana State, Wisconsin, Marquette, Virginia, Idaho, Butler, Eastern Michigan and the HL tournament against YSU. He averaged 12.7/7.4/2.1 in these games. His best was against MU with 22/14/5 but late in the year in the bracket buster he had 9/13/4 and the HL tournament he had 20/9/0 so he did come up fairly strong when they needed him.
As a junior I looked at Nevada, Idaho, Virginia, Wisconsin, Southern Illinois, Marquette, Drake, Valpo in the tournament and Bradley. He averaged 11.5/5.9/.5 in these games with 14/6/0 at Virginia and Valpo 15/6/0 and Bradley 23/8/1. He didn’t really grow too much against good teams or teams with a big (Idaho had a good big and Brown sucked twice) but in the last two post season games with Valpo and Bradley he did his part despite two losses.
This year I would look at Wisconsin, Tulsa, Harvard, Virginia and Eastern Michigan so far. He has averaged 10.6/4.6/1.8 in these games with EMU 19/10/1 and Harvard 12/6/3 being his best. Despite these stats in those two games it was still not enough to carry them to a win.
So has he played well for the most part against good teams? I would say yes. Are there some bad trends like his first two years being better for stats than his last two or his blocks going down? I would say yes. Are there some good numbers like coming up pick late in the year almost every year? I would say yes. If you want more and want to see him dominate a game against a good team and carry them to win then I really understand your point. I tracked 32 games and I think they won 6, maybe 7 of them.

I don't understand how people on here worship Keifer but always try and take away from Alec. It almost seems like his expectations are his own worst enemies for you guys. He is the one who opens it up for everyone on the floor. He does a lot more than what shows up in the box score, that's what makes him so big and that's why he's on NBA radars. Teams must game plan around AB. Would you rather let a 7-1 guy who can stretch the floor tear you apart or a 5-11 guard who is extremely iffy outside of the lane.

I can't speak for the other threads, but I've only seen 1 negative on this one. I think most teams are going to game plan to stop AB. Just look when he gets the ball he draws a crowd, many times 3 opponents. That said I'm sure the 2nd player they game plan to stop is KS but it's harder to have 3 men harassing him when he's 20+ feet from the basket. We are lucky with the talent we have and AB and KS make everyone better. It's been a long long time since I've seen a Phoenix player hit 40 points in only 33 minutes. In fact I would say the others to do it played more than 33 minutes? He could have easily gotten another 5-10 points by playing the last 4 minutes.

I love having Alec Brown on this team. GB is very lucky to have a player of his skill level. I have and will defend him when other hoops fans talk down on him. From a skill standpoint he has grown a lot as a player over is 3.5 years in GB. I have two worries about Alec. The people around the team will tell you he doesn't care about his stats which is good. Yet there are times when I think he could be more aggressive but isn't because he is afraid to make mistakes. He is one of the few guys in the HL that is an automatic double team. As I noted in Alaska he was almost always doubled and the few times he wasn't he looked to score. At the NBA level big guys are doubled all the time. I would love to see Alec go through a double without a turnover or spin away from it and score. He does struggle with turnovers and in some cases he looks to defer instead figuring out how to get his offense going. If he always gives it up then the opponent will always double, I would like to see him score in these situations more. The Fairfield game was the one time he looked to score in every way possible every time he touched the ball. That was a confident and aggressive version of Alec Brown. He can keep things open for teammates and get his too.

As a board we have not been negative on Alec and only one person that is new to the board gave negative comments. So it is not the norm here and think you may be fishing for a reaction. ALso, when the negative comment was made there were several that came out stating the opposite.
In addition, to workshipping KS, maybe we do but he is around average height and does things on a basketball court that we could only dream of.

I hear more people in the stands grumbling about Brown than anyone else on the team. He frustrates the people who sit near me because he plays so soft some of the time.

I'm not sure where you sit but we sit behind the other teams bench. Most of the people are from other schools and are amazed with his skills. Most of the comments are we wish he was on our team. I know you have made negative remarks about Alec's father in another thread on here, so do you have a axe to grind? I try to cut new members alot of slack because I like different opinions but this seems to almost be personel? Alec hits 3's, makes 75+% of FT's, scores from 12-15', blocks shots, rebounds and scores around the bucket. They only negatives is phantom fouls and a TO from being double and triple teamed. So you do seem to be surronded by myopic people.

HL makes AB player of the week on 1/20/2014. Congrats on AB's 3 award this Season and a great shooting weekend. Between Brown and Sykes they've received this award 8 out of 11 weeks this Season. www.horizonleague.org/blog/green-bays-brown-valpos-dority-williams-tabbed-for-hlmbb-honors.htmlAlso a quote from Keifer Sykes on AB, a truely Class Person. Andrew Gavin gbgavin.@k_J_SYKES on Alec Brown: I'm very proud of the way he's playing. He's the best player on the team right now #HLMBB pic.twitter.com/Hsjm0nfRYe

Very well deserved for Alec. At WSU he hit jumpers and really had a nice post game going. WSU didn't bring the double team to start as they tried to take away Keifer and Alec made them pay inside. I was really impressed and it shows what he can do when everything isn't geared on stopping him.
At UIC he had the full display going. He hit from deep. He had a put back slam. He took his guy off the dribble from the 3 point line for a dunk. He had the pick and pop going. As he comes down the strech he is really playing his way back up the NBA draft board. It isn't a case of scouts thinking he has the tools, it is a case of him showing he has the tools. The switch is flipped on right now and Alec is rolling.
