Emerging from the Bennett shadow is Brian Wardle. He recruited athletes willing to work and polished them into skill players. Facing the heavily hyped Virginia defense, GB shot 50% from the floor and 3 point line. The difference in the game was the GB defense was able to force the turnovers Virginia couldn't.
Awesome performances by Sykes, Mays, and Fouse. Mays improvement is his shooting, ball handling, and overall basketball IQ has been a true testament to this programs player development.
With the win Green Bay's RPI is up the 31st in the country. Yes that is at-large worthy. Plus, we'll be significantly better when McKinnie returns.

This was a significant program win for the Nix. Great game plan by the coaching staff that was executed to perfection by the players. This is a "team" in the best sense of the word. Again -- a special thanks to Tony Bennett for being willing to play the game in Green Bay and to Dick Bennett for what he has done and is doing for the UWGB program. It's time for the old fan base to come to the Resch Center. If you don't you will be missing something special. www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=734560149905615

Great game. I thought the play of Fouse and Love was significant. Fouse's steals along with just enough offense to keep them honest was huge. Three point shooting was important opening up the middle for Mays. While Brown did not show up well in the stats he changes a lot of shots and teams concentrating on him open it up for others. Sykes may be the best player in the state. (between him and Decker) This was a true team win.

Recruits in house to witness the big win included Matt Heldt and Brevin Pritzl.
My crystal ball says Matt Heldt will make a terrific decision for his future and become a Phoenix.

Shooting J,
What do you think of Pritzl's game, and how would you handicap his odds of playing in the Horizon league?

The decision to bring Love off the bench the last few games has made BW look really good. Love has looked great and brings a huge spark, learning from Sykes has to be a real treat and Love seems to be making the most of it. Sykes of course was great once again and continues to show that he is one of the best PG's in the nation. Mays came up huge and I would love to see that on a more consistent basis, a very efficient game for the Phoenix and a great win for our resume. AB still looks a little off but we were able to get other guys to step up which is the great thing about team sports. Can't wait for Horizon League play to start!

I hope you are correct. I think it would be a great fit for him, with an opportunity to get minutes right away. The Phoenix will be in need of a big man and I think Lowe could play along side him.

Did anyone else notice coach Heideman was at the game? He was sitting near my section. Very nice to see him come back, even though it was only because of Tony.

Yes he was sitting with Dick and Ann Bennett. Dick's daughter Amy, Husband and family was sitting one section over. I talked with all of them but mostly with Ann. Dick had a steady stream of well wishers as well as Mike Heideman. I'm guessing it was the 1st GB Mens Basketball game that Coach Heideman has been to since the split. It probably was one of the hardest things for Dick to sit through in Green Bay. I was very excited for GB's win but felt for Tony losing. They have both ment so much to GB basketball in the past.

The only thing that concerned me about this win is that GB had their shots falling and ended up getting out rebounded. The same thing happened with Pepperdine. I don't want to see that be a trend, the rebounding should be there no matter what.
Alec came out aggressive and ready to play, I thought he was going to have a big game when he had 7 quick points. Fouls seemed to derail him a little bit.
I think he only had 6 points but Fouse was looking to score more. He had 2 buckets in the half court at the rim and he tried to drive it a few other times. He looked more confident on offense.
Like everyone else has mentioned, the player development for Love and Mays is unreal. They are two real weapons for GB to use. Mays is going to play pro ball for a long time with the skills he now has. He is a tough matchup in the HL.
Tony Bennett seemed embarrassed by the video and the standing ovation he received. I say embarrassed in a good way, just a very humble response to his return.
I wasn't a big Heideman fan but it is nice that he was there. He played a part in the history of the program and despite how it ended for him it is good to see him there.
I like the optimism on Heldt committing. GB needs to get a true big guy committed in each of the next two classes.

Also, for those who didnt' DVR the game don't worry you didn't miss much. The SWAC football game went to OT and the GB coverage didn't start until the second half. Kind of disappointing that GB didn't get the entire game on in front of the national audience.

I was hoping there'd be some nice pregame talk about Tony/GB.

Shooting J, What do you think of Pritzl's game, and how would you handicap his odds of playing in the Horizon league? Great question, I was going to ask you the same. It's been too long since I've seen Pritzl play live. He has evelated his athletism, and has become a real stat sheet stuffer. Have you seen him lately Hoops? Can he impact the game at the HL level as more than just a shooter? That seems likely, but I can't answer that based on first hand accounts. Brevin's brother Brandom is good friends with Kam Ceronni, and Kam has went out of his way to bash coach Wardle privately. Has this impacted recruiting Brevin, or has Brevin realized on his own that Kam is spoiled and uncoachable? It's pretty clear as of now that players who buy into the developmental techniques coach Wardle uses greatly improve their game.
