Kiefer Sykes showed he is one of the best to ever play at Green Bay. The three best to ever play for the Nix -- Bennett, Nordgaard and Sykes. I think somehow Alec Brown was totally psyched out of his game last night. Was it trying too hard...thinking about the NBA scouts/first round draft talk or just bad Saturday Karma? He can learn from the experience. A couple more games under the belt before facing the Badgers would have done a world of good for team play. Lowe was a steal of a recruit. Added strength and conditioning and watch out. I hope GB proved something to the fans and the community supports this special team. You summerized it very well 2 more games would have helped alot. IMHO the only thing I would add is AB tried to put the ball on the ground to much and they were waiting for this. Madison had him scouted very well. Yes Lowe was a beast and should be a great player for GB. I was suprised with his play and the amount of minutes he played.

Brown had 2 points, 1 rebound, and 5 turnovers. He got off to a slow start last season, I hope that isn't the case again this year. We're going to need him to play well, especially in Alaska in a couple weeks

I'll start off by saying awesome game to watch. With 70% of the fans in attendance wearing red I think that there might be some bandwagon fans on the way. Awesome for the program to start the season on a high note against a Big Ten School and hopefully attendance can carry over to create an atmosphere for more games.
For those of you saying Alec Brown disappeared apparently you didn't listen to Bo Ryan's postgame. He said the biggest part of there game plan was to take Alec Brown out of the game. He's had success against them in the past with 18 pts 8 reb's as a freshman at Madison. With that said he still should've played better and was on the bad side of foul trouble.
However, his best friend right now should be Keifer Sykes. That same game plan allowed him to have a big game at home. But on the same note don't get ahead of yourselves as one person said last night boosted him to be a first round pick in the NBA Draft. Let's be honest he had 32 pts on 13-26 shooting and only 2 assists and 2 rebounds. At under 6 feet his inability to stretch the floor with a three point shot will catch up to him. Norris Cole had 30 pt 20 reb 10 asst games in the Horizon league and at 6'2 still barely broke into the 1st round. But he is an excellent player here and extremely fun to watch.
Young talent down low will only get better with Lowe and Fouse. The one thing that scares me with this team is it's inability to stretch the floor. They still have no consistent 3 pt shooters, even mid-range jumpers were few and far between. But hopefully their athleticism and length dominates Horizon League play. Should be fun season to watch.

I was at the Resch on Saturday......Great atmosphere.
Other than Sykes' performance, no one else from GB showed up offensively. UW focused on shutting down Alec, which they did well (holding him to 2 points). I think if Al McKinnie was available, he may have made a difference offensively and made up for Alec being a non-factor. Also, not having a consistent 3-point threat may hurt this team especially against stronger opponents. With our length, I don't see why GB didn't play more zone since UW wasn't exactly on fire from outside the arc (5-18 according to box score). GB had the edge athletically, but other than Sykes, the rest of the team seemed to disappear for very long stretches.
With the hastilly cancelled HCBU Tip Off tourney earlier this season, GB could have used the extra game experience against D1 teams. UW came in already battle-tested against St. John's and Florida.
I felt that GB left a lot out on the floor and could have had this game.....We can't do the same thing against Virgina in a couple weeks. Hopefully the trip to Alaska will help this team develop some more.

Now that it is all done, I really wish McKinnie was healthy for this game. I know I under valued Sam Dekker. McKinnie might have had a better chance to slow him down. I thought Dekker went over and through Jordan Fouse and around Greg Mays. He was very hard to stop, way more studly than I expected him to be.
I was very impressed with Kenneth Lowe. He didn't fill his pants on a big stage and made a lot of nice plays. I am very encouraged about his future. He made a nice impact now, I can only imagine what he does with added strength and skill development.
Given that GB did out rebound them, did hold their 3pt shooting in check and did have Sykes go off I am really disappointed to lose that game. Too many missed bunnies (at least 4 I can think of) and missed the "and one" three times. They can't have that if they want to beat UW.
Despite out rebounding UW I don't really feel like GB controlled that end. It felt like UW closed out a lot of GB possessions where despite getting looks GB didn't get a lot of crucial boards especially in the first half. They need a bigger margin on the boards if they are going to play quick and attack for second looks.
Sucks that Alec couldn't get in a flow. Not only did that keep GB from winning but I had to listen to a lot of casual fans who don't see a lot of games say things like he is a stiff or hasn't developed at all. Alec has so many skills and is a lot better player than his freshman year. I am just not sure he has ever developed that killer instinct though, need that night in and night out to make a big splash.
I am sure at some point he will shoot them to a win this year but if Fulton isn't knocking anything down then he can't play. The three point shooting was a big negative in this game.
I did like to see that the rebound and run mentality was working against UW. UW has usually done such a good job of controlling tempo yet the everyone boards and everyone starts to dribble/outlet pass ahead approach worked well. Two good examples of things this GB team does that I think sets it apart were Garrett throwing a lob to Sykes and Mays going coast to coast for a bucket and one. How many teams in the HL can throw a fast break lob to their PG or have a 6'9" guy grab a board and take it to the other end for a reverse layup?

We will get another test on 12/7 against Virginia. In watching the game versus VCU (which they lost at home) they have big guards, but seemed to have trouble against VCU's smaller guards, especially against Trevor Graham.
Hopefully having Al McKinnie for that game will push GB over the top, especially finishing around the basket.

I was at the game and had a great time. Two evenly matched teams. As I watched it in person, it seemed to me that Brown was being held to a higher standard with regard to fouls, I held off commenting because my view from the stands was not as good as the refs. Last night I watched a replay on ESPN3, it only confirmed my original thoughts.

It seems like refs let other teams play physical with Alec and when he decides to reciprocate they call him for fouls. The coaching staff needs to put together some tape and send it to the league.

Also, it isn't true apples to apples because the game was played in GB compared to Madison but I did see the Badgers hang big numbers on North Dakota and Bowling Green in what looked like easy wins this week. It puts the lower scoring and close loss in more perspective. I feel pretty optimistic heading to Alaska that they GB can compete in a good mid major tournament.
