I hope there isn't anything more serious, but if he isn't healthy by conference season, it would be better to shut it down and hope for a 6th season. With Alec and Vince gone after this season, Al would be one of the focal points for next season as GB would return a LOT of players and would most likely be favorites in the HL again.

He would only be eligible for a 6th year if the injury forced him to miss this entire year. This is already his 4th year of school, I'd highly doubt he'd want 2 more years. Plus, he'd be eligible to transfer and play immediately once he graduates. Any scenario that gets him on the court this year is the best option.
Who know, maybe he'll be back next week. All meniscus injuries are different. Derrick Rose will miss the rest of the very long NBA season with a meniscus injury.

I am not too worried yet about McKinnie, this Wednesday will be 7 weeks since his surgery. I am sure they didn't want to take any chances. He is jumping around on the sidelines so he can't be too far away from a return. I would like to think this team would be 6-1 or better with him based on how close the two losses were. At this point as long as he is ready to go by conference season I will be happy.

We maybe getting close to an answer on a Medicial Reshirt for Al? This was tweeted today by Dan Koob Sports Videojournalist for NBC 26.
When asked about a possible medical redshirt for Junior Al McKinnie, HC Brian Wardle said an announcement would come from the team soon.

At this point and the way the team has been playing (for the sake of chemistry), it would be better for Al to redshirt.....He would be the interior scorer for 2014-15 and fill the role that Alec is for this season. Next year's team will be quicker than they are this season.....We will need to find a starter at shooting guard since Vince will be gone.

I still want Al to play this year. Who knows if he gets a sixth year from the NCAA and who knows if he plays it here or if he even wants to stay in college that long when he probably can make a living playing basketball somewhere on this planet.
When I look at G with a bad back and ankle, a strong start but still inexperienced Lowe and Jordan/Vince/Josh being undersized if they play in the front court I would really like Al to be a potential difference maker. I really believe having a healthy version of Al coming down the stretch makes this team a true Cinderella.
In my mind I am bracing for the worst news though they are shutting him down. Yet I am holding out hope that because he hasn't played in a month that they truely wanted to wait for him to be 100%. He took the full amount of time to come back from the initial estimate and then another month from there.
As for next year I see CLove starting in Vince's spot. I think next year they can hope that Tevin or Turner has progressed enough that they can put them in the rotation somewhere without a big drop off. I really think Tevin is going to be a Bree Perine type. He had a slow start, made a little improvement in his 2nd year and then a big jump in his last two years. Tevin looks to have that kind of handle and length. Plus there is depth right now just like Bree faced when he came in. Also, I could see one of the new guys in the mix. Just a hunch, but when you watch Francis he looks aggressive which I think Wardle will like and Small will be a year removed from HS and should be more game ready the most newcomers.

I think it would be carrington loves spot to lose. He seems to be ahead in the rotation of the other players who would compete for that next year.
Lamin Fulton Josh Humphrey Tevin Findlay Tanner Botz
Would be competing for time off then bench. I doubt any one of these guys would start straight thru the year. Good competition.
Kenneth Lowe development will be the most exciting to watch. I really seeing him having a high ceiling.
Remember when I said before this season that fouse was that third guy and not to overlook him. He might even be all conference this year as a sophomore. All defense for sure.

I wouldn't count out either freshman. Small or Francis pushing for time. Competition will make that position better.

Teams don't just "fill the role" of a 7'1" player that's as skilled as Alec and teams won't be gameplanning to stop Mckinnie. He will add some more athleticism to a team that will already be scary athletic though. Really hoping to hear good news about his return soon.

We've been banged up and could use him for the final push. I'm just concerned that it's still lingering on and how effective he would be? The question on Medical was just a throw out, I don't know his thoughts on another year of school and I feel Lowe is going to be a force in the years to come. Botz also has the skills to stretch defenses and just needs to get up to College BB speed.

Found out that McKinnie will definitely be back this year and he can't get a medical redshirt as you have to be hurt for two years.

The two years was due to him transferring and it would be for a sixth year. The person that told me this was Coach Wardle so maybe he has the two year thing wrong but would assume he would know if Mckinnie is coming back this year.

I have been wrong on the rules before but since they have 5 years to play 4 seasons I think the McKinnie info seems accurate to me. He will have used his 5th year for his transfer year so the exception for the injury being two years makes sense. Think of O’Tule for Marquette or Evan Eschmeyer for Northwestern as examples. With that said I am more worried that McKinnie isn’t coming back this year and that the year is just lost. How much longer can he possibly be out considering they thought he would be back a month and a half ago?
