The father and son combination that led to a renaissance for Detroit Mercy basketball has ended after three seasons.
Ray McCallum, the talented junior point guard for the Titans, has decided to enter the NBA draft. His father and coach, Ray McCallum, said in a statement released Saturday night that he supported his son’s decision, announced one day before an NCAA deadline.
McCallum (6-feet-3, 190 pounds) was the Horizon League player of the year, averaging 18.7 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.5 assists. As a sophomore, he led the Titans to the Horizon tournament title and a berth in the NCAA tournament.
McCallum, who attended Birmingham Detroit Country Day and was a Free Press Dream Team member, could be drafted in the second round, according to draft prognosticators. LinkInteresting decision. Alec Brown is probably the front runner for preseason Horizon League Player of the Year now.

You have to think Brown will be eating just a ton of food and living in the weight room the next few months. He's gotta get bigger. If he does, he can be a lottery pick if GB makes a run. He's got the skills, and his mid-range shooting is getting better all the time.
I don't think he's quite where Oakland's Keith Benson was as a junior, but next year's draft looks weak in centers.

I really hope Ray Jr. does well in the NBA, wouldn't mind seeing the Bucks draft him.
However with him leaving, GB almost has to be the favorite on paper at this point.

Alec has to have a "skinny gene" i'm sure he's been busting to put on weight cause he gets it But he did come in at under 200 lbs so he has added quite a bit of weight.
I wonder where McCallum gets drafted; you'd think he'd have to be a second round pick. Same as Vander Blue, I wonder if a another year in college would have helped their stock.

About a year ago I talked to Alec he said he was eating either 6 or 8 meals a day. So yes he's trying and yes the weight will catch up it always does. lol I would love to see McCallum get into the 1st round but I don't think it will happen. Another year and he would have had a chance.

With Ray Jr. leaving that hopefully clears Detroit out of the mix. I thought I read that Calliste was thinking of leaving as well.
While that helps GB, I think WSU still has to be the favorite for next year. They did finish 3rd and did make the HL tournament finals.
As for Ray Jr. I do see him as an NBA player. He has good size, good handles and a decent shot. A guy a really liked in college was Diante Garrett and he is on the Suns bench. I see no reason Ray Jr. can't at least be in the league like Diante as they have similar skills. I thought Shelvin Mack wasn't a true PG and he has been in and out of the NBA so again no reason to believe Ray Jr. can't play at his size being a true PG.

I agree that Ray Jr is an NBA caliber player. He was far better as a junior than Norris Cole was.
As for favorites for next year, I'd say Green bay and WSU will be co-favorites. Oakland could be in the mix as well.
The league won't be nearly as balanced as last year. Milwaukee could be even worse, Detroit, losing McCallum, Anderson, Minnrath, and Caliste, will be bad too. UIC loses a bunch of seniors too, they'll return to being bad, they had no interesting young talent. If NKU is added, they'll be terrible. They lose their top 2 scorers, and only won some games last year because it was against lowly Atlantic Sun Conference competition.

I think Wright State is the runaway favorite. Green Bay wasn't terribly deep even before losing players. Adding Tevin Findlay is good, but is he going to replace Cerroni/Muhammad?
I think we'd be hard-pressed to be worse. I don't see us blowing anyone away, but 10 wins isn't a stretch.
Is Detroit absolutely losing Calliste? I thought there was a chance he'd be back?

Actually I do think the addition of Tevin and a full season of Cole Stefan will be more than enough to replace Kam and Su. Plus the wildcard will be Josh Humphrey being back. GB will be at worst 1 game back of 1st at the end of the regular season, and I'd put my early money on them winning the conference tourney.
