With the official split of the Catholic 7 from the Big East, and the presumptive moves from Butler and Xavier from the A-10 and Creighton from the MVC, this now leaves the MVC with 9 teams as of next season......However, with only 9 teams, will the MVC look to the HL for a new 10th team??
If so, I think Valpo may be the top candidate IMO. They can have an in-state conference rivalry with Indiana St. and Evansville. I would also think they may look at one of the Chicago schools (Loyola or UIC) as well......If the HL loses Valpo, it would be another blow to the conference RPI which already got a swift kick to the groin when Butler left fot the A-10 last summer.
If not someone from the HL, then who??

Horizon League commissioner Jon LeCrone addressed a variety of topics at the annual Horizon League “state of the league” address, including the much-anticipated conference expansion.
The Horizon League fell to nine teams when Butler left last summer and LeCrone anticipates that the conference will find a replacement within the next two years. The longtime commissioner doesn’t anticipate any schools will leave the conference.
“The probability of our nine schools staying intact is very high,” LeCrone said. “I see that number growing.”
LeCrone outlined his belief that the recent influx of conference movement will continue, with more moves occurring in the coming months.
“I think there will be a lot of change coming between now and the Final Four,” LeCrone said. “The landscape is going to shape what opportunities might be there for us. You want to be measured and you want to be thoughtful. We’re just going to have to be patient.”Link

Hope no HL teams leave.....Another possibility for a (non-HL) replacement for Creighton for the MVC: Murray State from the OVC; I saw it on an Evansville message board. They are just over 90 minutes from SIU and just over 2 hours to Evansville, and a 3 1/2 to 4 hr. drive to Arch Madness in St. Louis. It also gives a strong program like Murray State a chance to play in a multiple bid league; Can't do that in the OVC, and the HL may send 2 teams to the NCAA every few years if they are lucky. They have that chance in the MVC......If the HL is going to expand, they may try to get Murray St., but I won't think they will come.

One sorce told the USA Today that Belmont and Denver were the frontrunners for the MVC opening. LinkDenver may seem like an odd choice, but they're a big budget private school, and their basketball team has a RPI of 57 this year, and thats with just 1 senior. Its outside the MVC footprint, but easy to fly into, abd MVC schools have the budget to fly. I really hope the MVC picks Denver, and leaves Belmont for the HL. Belmont's total athletics budget is low for the MVC.

I get the impression that HL fans can look forward to Oakland joining soon and that is about it.

I just can't understand why Denver is a legitimate possibility for the MVC.

I found this interesting from Rob's article this weekWardle also said he’s keeping a home and road date open for the possibility the Horizon League adds another team. UWGB athletic director Ken Bothof said he hoped to know within the next month how many league games will be played next season.
“There has to be a drop-dead date, and I know the league office is working on a couple of different scenarios,” Bothof said. “If we reach this date, plan on this many teams, and if we reach this date, plan on this many. We don’t have specifics, but I think it will be coming shortly.”Sounds like we'll know soon if we are sticking with 9 again this upcoming season or if we're adding schools

There is a lot of talk of UMKC, Valpo, UIC and Loyola being in the lead to join the MVC. Outside of Valpo I can't take the other 3 seriously. If the point is to be the best basketball conference they can be, then UMKC, UIC and Loyola are odd choices. These are programs that I think are a long way from being good. I thought Oral Roberts was a much better choice.
As it relates to Green Bay I am not mad that GB isn't under consideration. While I think a school like GB kind of fits the MVC mold (good facilities, only hoops game in town), I also understand that the GB athletic budget will always keep it from moving up. I believe they are in the bottom 50 if not the bottom 30 in the country. If anything I am mad that nobody at GB has been able to fix this problem.

Rob D and Jimmy from uwm are reporting that UIC is going the MVC and Oakland is coming to the Horizon. UMKC and Denver are also on the radar. Also, reporting every team except uwm and GB are looking at other options.

I cannot confirm that MKE or GB are looking at other conferences. That doesn't mean they aren't. I sure hope MKE is at least reaching out.
