Having a degree from Green Bay and having covered the University of Virginia basketball team I had a great time last night watching the Tony Bennett lead Wahoos beat Duke. It got me thinking of how the Wisconsin basketball scene may have been radically different. Dick Bennett applied for the Marquette job or showed interest several times. Tony had a superficial interview when Mike Heideman was fired at Green Bay.
Herb Kohl’s decision to make a major donation to build the arena in Madison and court Dick Bennett for the Badgers meant there would be no Bennett connection to Marquette. Would or could UWGB become the small college basketball version of the Packers if the Bennett bloodline continued with Tony? How about a higher level basketball conference for GB because of the Bennett’s?
Did the Kohl fortune start with a corner grocery store catering the Marquette Community?
I'm living in Eugene, Oregon now and see the impact Nike's Phil Knight has had on the Ducks athletic program $ Before leaving Oklahoma I watch the impact one billion dollars can have on an athletic department. Thank you T Boone Pickens. Is there a super daddy out there waiting to step into the sports scene around Wisconsin?

Here's another thought.....Once Bo Ryan retires from UW, I don't neceessarily think the job would go to Greg Gard or Gary Close as a slam dunk (no pun intended). If Tony keeps it going at Virginia, I can see UW reaching out to TB once o Ryan decides to hang it up. TB's brand of basketball fits well in the Big Ten. I can see TB keeping Guard and Close and brigning in Ben Johnson.
UW has had a great basketball run since NBA lifers Stu Jackson and Stan Van Gundy each had a cup of coffee at UW. Having 2 basketball geniuses like Bennett and Ryan at the flagship school in Wisconsin is rare, outside of the Kentucky's, North Carolinas, UCLA's, and the Kansas's of the world.

Gary Close will not be considered for the job at UW. Gard would receive serious consideration, as Bo has already made him Associate Head Coach, and, has publicly lobbied for him to replace him some day. IMO, the next UW assistant to get a HC job will be Lamont Paris.
UW would place the call to Tony, but the UW HC is not his dream job. He has other aspirations.....

When it comes to Div.1 BB in Wis GB is the red headed step child who just gets the leftovers financially. If we had a Herb Kohl or Phil Knight it would go along way to making a great playing field. when it come to funding(private and public) in Wis this seems to be the way it works, 1. Marquette 2. UW 3. UWM 4. anybody else. 5. GB. We've had to live with this since we went Div. 1.
