Green Bay dealt first loss at the buzzer in road battleNevada's Burton trumps Green Bays late threeBurton was the WAC player of the year last year, and Nevada won 28 games a year ago, but to be honest I thought they seemed very beatable. GB got their turnover issues under control in the 2nd half, but didn't dominate the glass the way they needed to. Brown continue's to float around the floor and settle for low percentage mid-range jumpers. He went 3-13 in this game after going 7-20 yesterday. 10-33 is just not helping your team. Get better shots, or give the ball up. While Al shot 23%, the rest of the squad shot 49%. This team has other players that can score. This team can't take the next step if Brown shoots 43% again this year, and he needs a few great games to get up the that low % he posted a year ago. Lots of NBA scouts at last nights game, and I doubt any of them came away impressed. They will want to see a great sense of urgency, and the willingness to be physical. Cougill was a beast last night. He needs more post touches. Love the work Fouse does on the boards. Mays was very active on the glass too. Fouse needs to get better finishing around the hoop. He defended Malik Story, an all-WAC player last year, extremely well. Cerroni also did a nice job with 6'8" Jerry Evans by getting physical with him. Aggressive back-up Joey Burris was a match-up problem. Defending teams with 2 quick wings will be a problem. Nevada big Devonte Elliot had shots fall he doesn't usually hit, it was the game of his life. Green Bay mixed in a 1-3-1 defense that was a nice change of pace, and will give lesser teams fits.

The Nix have to shake off last night quickly, it doesnt get any easier today against Fullerton. They took Southern Utah to the woodshed yesterday.

Speaking of inaccuracies, the Press-Gazette is up to it again. In their TV/Radio listings, they had the women's game starting at 3:00. In their game preview, they had it accurately listed at 2:00. Last year, I counted 14 times they had either the women or men playing at different times in the same edition, or they didn't have it listed at all (much like last night's men's game)
While I am not a huge women's bb fan, I'll check in at the beginning of their games, just to get a preview of the opponent. In the promo leading up to the game yesterday, WDUZ still has Matt Bollant coaching this year's team. Someone needs to tell Nelligan Sports to, uh, update their roster a bit. They deserve a better product.

As a TV nooz director I used the "noozer" slang on the assignment board for someone covering a news conference.

Green Bay's 2nd half rally falls shortNix played awful, and got buried early. Then, clawed their way from 26 down all the way to just 4. Fullerton made every free throw down the stretch to kill any chance of a rally. CSFU is a clone of YSU, and a terrible match-up for the Nix. We just dont have the quickness to defend a team like this. Greg Mays and Sultan Muhammad played well in reserve. Turning point in this game came in the middle of the 1st half. With the Phoenix getting blown out, Brown didn't chase after a loose ball, and an outraged Wardle ripped him from the game. On the next post player substitution, Wardle let Brown continue to sit and instead sent in Arenz. Credit to Brown, he rose to the challenge and responded the right way. Once back in the game, Brown finally got his butt in the paint and dominated the interior. Fullerton couldn't match his length, as he caught lob after lob while drawing a foul each time. With him and Cougs taking turns connecting on the high-low game, the Nix almost pulled off a miraculous comeback. Props to Alec for meeting the challenge the right way. Some players sulk in that situation. Hopefully big Brown can keep it rolling.

That was an interesting round robin for GB. They lost to the two good teams and mostly handled a pretty weak Southern Utah.
Southern Utah had some size and one pretty good player. On the whole I would say they might be good eventually. They have a new young coach but I can't say anything he did stood out. Good to get a win and mostly control the game.
Nevada was a quality opponent and would be easily a top tier HL team if not more. They had some length all around, they had some athletic ability and they had some skill. GB controlled the glass, fought hard to come back and got beat by a hard shot. Aside from 3 turnovers to start they game I thought GB played well. Also, they do need to clean up the FT shooting in the tight games.
Fullerton was a very long, athletic and skilled team. They had two or three guys that were really amazing in a one on one game. It was very hard to stop, especially when GB came out flat. CSF made Sykes look weak, really had Love out of his groove for a bit and rattled Kam's confidence. Once Jordon got the hustle game going and the big guys got the high low things really turned around. Too little too late but at least they made a game of it. CSF is underrated in my opinion, a ton of D1 transfers on that team. They were easily the best of the 4 teams in Reno.
Turner didn't do much on the stats board but he is the leader of the team, when CSF had them down he was the most vocal about getting back in the game. When he got in the games he played hard. The guys respond to him.
Mays had a stretch against Nevada that I thought was some of his best basketball. He can really rebound in traffic and get to some balls that other guys can't. Against Fullerton he showed an improved ability to score in ways other than lob dunks. He looks to be coming along nicely.
Jordan Fouse is a stud in the making. He gets his hands everywhere. He too can rebound in traffic and get balls other GB guys can't. His defense is very solid. Once he finds his offensive comfort he will be a tough match up. I really like him and would love him if he could knock down free throws right now.
Carrington Love is a nice defender and showing a solid ability to penetrate. I expect by the second half of the season that will be even more improved as he finds his way in college hoops. He is a guy who needs to work on his outside shot. With that and some seasoning he will be a good player for several years.
Kam Cerroni showed some ability to make shots after being run off his jumper. I thought that was a nice improvement for him. I never noticed before how he is a really mental player. When he gets in a good mental place he is tough and when he is in a bad mental place they need to sub him out asap because his whole game suffers. He is too good of a shooter to worry and yet I sense that he does, at least a little.
Sultan played tough in the CSF game, he earned his second half minutes. A nice role player to have and he looks to be gaining confidence as the games move on.
BC needs to hit a 3. Once he does that he will be back all the way. He post game is good, his passing is solid and his rebounding is strong. He just can't buy a jumper right now.
Keifer got out of control a few times and got ripped off by the officials a few times. I just know this, he can't be in foul trouble. Also, I don't know that I like the CL and KS back court yet on offense. KS is so good with the ball in his hands that I don't like seeing him without it.
Alec is an interesting case. He looks like he is feeling a lot of pressure right now. He needs to pick up his focus on his game, some of the turnovers have been weak. Bringing the ball down low or not seeing double teams coming. Plus I can't recall many shot blocks in those three games. Not to mention his free throw shooting was suspect. I like him in the high low game, his high post shooting is solid and he is still getting on the glass for the most part. Around loose balls he seems a bit timid going after them. Despite all of this he is putting up stats. His guys believe in him, the coaches want to keep going to him. I think he just needs to get it in his mind that that if he plays 40 minutes of his game most teams can't stop him.
