Toledo has now won 4 consecutive outright MAC titles. Cincinnati is the only other school to do it from 1947-51.
Tod Kowalczyk and the Rockets lost 3 all-league players from last season — including MAC Player of Year RayJ Dennis to Baylor.
He was a good coach when he was at GB and underappreciated in the shadow of the Bennett Era.

He did the same thing in Toledo. The only thing lacking is a NCCA tournament bid.

That was proven when he returned here and ran around like he won the national title when Darner did a home and home with him. Thankfully that team returned the favor by winning at Toledo in OT. Wardle was much more likable even with the allegations he had against him.

Tod definitely knows what he is doing on the basketball court.
The same criticism of him from 13 years ago is probably still true today. Watching from afar he still goes through lots of players and coaches. Those who make it have a mutual loyalty and respect with him. Getting to that point is sometimes a challenge.
With Akron slipping of late he has a great opportunity to get to the dance. It is the missing piece on his resume. Love him or hate him it is something that he has poured himself into accomplishing. I'd like to see Toledo make it.

He is also incredibly driven. He couldn't handle Bennet's shadow, but hopefully he's found happiness in Toledo. If he makes the big dance this year, it will be a giant weight off his shoulders.

Hopefully, we're all a work in progress. When I was dealing with Kowalczyk he was outstanding one on one. He needed coaching dealing with the filter of media and larger groups. He has proven he's an outstanding coach. If he wants he'll get a shot at a high major school. I've said this before, years ago I covered Jim Larrañaga when he was an assistant at Virginia. Kowalczyk's career seems to be following a similar path.
