The season is here! The most anticipated Phoenix season in a long time opens at home versus the Chicago St. Cougars. Great to open the season versus a D1 opponent. That said, the Cougars are expected to struggle this year. They have 1 very good player in big man Jeremy Robinson, but he'll be surrounded by newcomers, largely from the JuCo ranks. Chicago St is presently a member of the Great West Conference, which will likely fold after this season. That conference does not have an auto-bid for the NCAA tournament, so most of the rest of the members have all found new homes for next season, except Chicago St. Here's Andrew Gavin's preview, compete with video: Green Bay Lifts the Lid on 2012-13 on Saturday Afternoon

A classic first game of the season. Turnover city and the worst outside shooting in years. Alec Brown never got started. Skykes came alive in the second half with a career performance - quick on quick. Fouse showed smarts and promise
The Nix get extra credit for overcoming a slow start and winning a tight game. I think Chicago State is much better than years past.

Sykes was unbelievable and the FT shooting saved the day. Fouse really hit the boards and it was nice seeing Turner looking good. I also agree Chicago St. either played their game of the year or are better than they used to be. They were relentless on defense.

What a crap mess that game was..... I feel safe on the under 20.5 total wins bet. Should have known better when St. Norbert outplayed them in the first half of the exhibition....

The game video should provide a lot of teaching points for the Nix coaching staff. The turnover situation will be handled and Alec Brown will have radically better games. The return of Turner will provide depth and smarts up front. Fouse is an amazingly wise freshman. Very impressive first D1 game. 10 rebounds? Fouse last season would have meant five more wins for GB.
I doubt we'll see another Phoenix team this seaon with 30 TOs and single digit shooting percent from three point country.

Their defense overplayed every play and 1/2 court defense caused problems. We talked on the way out and it mainly was if Cerroni and Brown had this game last season against anyone we would have lost by 30. ^5 to Sykes and the rest of the players for picking up the slack.

Coming in to the game I was expecting a win but I didn't know what to expect from Chicago State. Every part of me wanted to think it would be a blow out win, yet a small part of me was concerned that CSU had a lot of older players. Mostly lower level JUCO transfers but still experienced players. To the credit of CSU those guys came out ready to play. I would describe their style as Chicago playground style. Coach Dildy had a style of play that I think excites players and fans. The full court pressure defense, the double and triple teaming the post, playing in the passing lanes to get turnovers and launching a lot of 3's all gave GB trouble. Yet it was also that style of play that cost CSU the win. They weren't skilled/talented enough or well coached enough to play that style without turning it over a ton and being out of position for a lot of fouls. They gave GB the win by sending the Phoenix to the line. If a team struggles at the line then maybe CSU can pull off a few W's.
In the end it was good that this GB team fought back from an early hole. It was good that they made free throws. It was good to get a win with Brown laying an egg. It was good to get a win with no shooting from anywhere other than Sykes and the line. So many looks that didn't drop down.
I was frustrated that CSU jumped on GB early. I was frustrated that Alec couldn't get himself going, a true stud will still get his even if defensive pressure is high. I was frustrated with Keifer's turnovers in the first half but he cleaned that up in the second half to demonstrate what a stud he is.
Jordan in a nice overall player, looks a guy who isn't forcing anything but isn't totally comfortable in the half court offense. He did get on the glass very well and seems to have active hands.
For his size and experience I was expecting more, I think Sultan needs to tighten up his ball handling. He looks like a liability in that regard right now
Another week to practice, lets see if GB comes out ready to play on Friday.

I don't think you can say where Chicago State is, because we know precious little about their program. They could be a lot better this year.
But I think this was a case of Green Bay just having a ho-hum game. Every team has those near the beginning of the year, no matter if your RPI finishes 10 or 310. The difference is, can the team overcome the bad play and get a victory. Yesterday showed the Phoenix could respond to adversity in a game they should have won going away and still came out with the W.
I don't think there's too much concern here. Brown isn't going to score that low more than 2 or 3 times a season tops. Cougill isn't going to be that cold in shooting most games. 6 assists to 30 turnovers? Holy crap.
