In past years I've been critical of the Nix marketing efforts, particularly when it comes to social media. That has changed in the past year to 18-months. I saw some timid first steps and now the campaign is at full tilt. I've always believed that success depends on four factors -- person, place, time and luck. For the men's basketball program it seems that the right combination of people -- the new head coach, the AD and chancellor are forming a winning combination. Coach Wicks has a Tom Sawyer painting the fence energy that has been desperately needed. The team building is going beyond getting his players to buy in. We are seeing an unprecedented community outreach happening. Here's hoping the effort will turn the corner and be sustained because the value to northeastern Wisconsin will go beyond having a winning men's basketball program. www.facebook.com/gbphoenixmbb/posts/pfbid023WMhjaFAm7t6T9PHApv95Ek3YuTPvfPBf4yb8tpFMrg8yfNizLnCLzkL4enQm4GFl?notif_id=1694446425581205¬if_t=notify_me_page&ref=notif

I get the excitement, but “unprecedented?”
This is pretty basic stuff that won’t mean anything if winning doesn’t follow.

Yes, winning will turn the corner -- although an NCAA Tournament bid and a competitive team didn't get fans in the stands for Darner. The program has been sliding into morbidity. What I see is a group of key individuals attaching electric jumper cables and jolting life into things. This is an unprecedented effort and my memory goes back to the very beginning of the program. Bennett did it through a methodical building effort that lead to a golden age. Kowalczyk and Wardle had their moments. Neither would be considered super salesmen. The athletic directors were button down types. The only chancellor till this point who truly understand what a D1 level sports program could do for building a university was Weidner. The group in place now gets it, from the chancellor to the AD and the new head coach. What we see now is energy, showmanship from the new coach and social media hype. Will it work? It sure would be a fun ride if it does.

My guess is less than 5% of the local people would know who Sunny Wicks is if I asked them. I hope it works, but none of its really matters unless they win. I will admit that I was not a fan of this hire, and still withholding judgement until I see results on the court. Energy and showmanship are useless, and frankly can be downright irritating, if winning doesn't happen.

In GB and the Fox Valley there are probably 750,000 people. Getting 5% (37,500) to care would be jet fuel for the program.
The waiting until they win mentality or devaluing improved effort from the athletic department is exactly how this program got into the mess they were in. Be happy they are working their butts off to fix this for all of NE WI to enjoy.
