“One thing I am preparing myself for is Donovan Ivory type guys. Well Ivory plus guys.”
“What I mean by that is coming off of a 5 win season it may be hard to get a guy that has proven D1 stats. I am expecting guys that look the part and need a chance like an Ivory. I'm also expecting guys that have played for other programs and put up stats but need a consistent role to show they are 10+ppg guy, I call this Ivory plus.”
“The top guy I want GB to get is maybe a 5ppg scorer from a D1 with 3 years left to play. He has done it at the D1 level, he just needs to find a home like in GB, that he would go from being at best the third option to a primary option.”
“The other guy I want GB to get didn't play much for a pretty good D1 program but absolutely looks the part and any film on him makes you think he just needs a chance. He has 3 years to play as well and has the type of upside that would really excite fans.”
I copied the above comments that I made from the 2022 offseason thread. With the news that Reynolds is going to UW I think GB is back in the same boat. The team is coming off of a 3 win season and has a new coach that is not proven as a D1 head coach. Reynolds had obvious connections to GB but the rest of the players GB is likely to get are guys that may be less proven. I think if GB does their home work they can find guys that would be able to make a meaningful impact even if they don’t come with the same wow factor that Noah Reynolds would have come with.
The top guy I wanted last year was Tyson Acuff. He went on to average 14ppg on 46% shooting at EMU. He had a season high of 36 points.
The other guy that I mentioned that I wanted was Ty Johnson. He went on to average 14ppg on 42% shooting at UC Davis. He had a season high of 32 points.
I didn’t mention him in any specific thread but another guy I was thinking of last spring was Jeremiah Hernandez. He went to Southern Indiana and averaged 5ppg in a bench role.
I did find out way later that at least one of these guys had strong interest in GB and another had at least passing interest in GB so it isn’t like GB can’t approach guys like this. These are all guys that had limited to no stats at Duquesne, Loyola and Kent St respectively prior to entering the portal. I think we may be looking at more guys like this and that won’t worry me. Guys like Dalton Banks, Noah Barnhart, Max Nelson, Nobal Days, Cam Palesse, Majok Deng or Amar Aguillard fit the profile of guys that look the part but haven’t earned a lead role yet. Some higher rated guys that make regional sense like Eli King, Danilo Jovanovich, Jordan Davis and Emarion Ellis also don’t have much in the way of stats but could be impact players if GB can land them. One side note, Eli King had an older brother player for Winona St so there is a connection there to one of the new assistant coaches.
I am down but not out for portal recruiting.
