Since the 2002-2003 season, Tod Kowalczyk's first year, GB has played high majors 55 times.
They are 5-50 overall. They are 4-2 at home. They are 0-2 on neutral sites. They are 1-46 on the road. Let me write that again. THEY ARE 1-46 ON THE ROAD.
They are currently riding a 24 game losing streak in road games that they got paid to play in.
Back in the TK and BW days they were able to trade road games for home games Wisconsin, Michigan State, Virginia and Marquette. Those days are long gone in the industry due to tv money.
The best I can tell in the TK era they took maybe one buy game a year, usually it was tied to a tournament. In the NIT they played Ohio State. In some other tournament they had to play Utah. They appeared to play Iowa and Missouri in games not tied to anything.
In five years of BW every high major except one was tied to a home game. The exception was Miami.
Times changed and so did leadership. MEG came in and started making the team play for money and BW bounced ASAP.
Once Darner arrived the team played two games for money in his first three years. Leadership changed again and CG had them expand to four games for money and five games for money in his last two years respectively.
The last two years GB played three games for money and now this year it is five games for money.
It is really hard to build anything when the program appears to value money more than winning.
When you operate like a low major, you get low major results. Will Ryan may not be the guy but they also don't give him a lot to work with. His plan to win games is to get top prospects and develop them. Well he has started to do the first part. I am willing to patiently wait for the second part because the university is now in its 8th year of mistreating this program.

Simple 2nd half adjustment for Georgetown, spread the floor and then go 1 on 1. Overwhelm with talent. It worked. And what adjustments to Green Bay do to counter that? Absolutely nothing. This is a damn shame. We just locked in 3 amazing recruits yesterday in Mac, Cal and Marcus but if we keep this up we may never even see them play a minute in Green Bay. Good thing Georgetown did not come out at the opening tip playing with that strategy or I guess we may have lost by 60

She doesn't get nearly enough blame for the current state of affairs. Much of what is going on now is still the residue of her handiwork.

Linc's contract was absurd and would have gone on into infinity and reward him for marginal performance measures, such as finishing in the top half of the Horizon standings and stuff like that. If you couldn't get him to renegotiate that contract, there was sort of no other choice than to bite the bullet, take the hit and move on. And the way it was written, the longer he stayed here the longer the term would have become and the bigger the buyout would be. Now, as far as Ryan and playing the buy-in games - is he really being forced to by the Administration? I thought I read something in his contract details once that said he gets X % of buy-in money over a certain total or something like that. Meaning he is rewarded salary-wise for getting a lot of these games. We have several games left before the end of the calendar year that are going to be painful to watch.
Even though we've been crushed in the last 2 second-halves of our games, I don't feel like we look quite as lost as we did last year on offense - that isn't much to go on but any port in a storm I guess.

The bonuses for playing the buy games is to make up for the career harm of being forced to play buy games. It is an administrative decision to play those games, and that won't change until UWGB has a chancellor that understands that athletics enhances the student experience for all. You're spot on about the ridiculousness of Linc's contract. It had to be stopped.

Wasn’t it Charles Guthrie who put the top half thing into Linc’s contract or was it Mary?
Curious if Linc would of been let go a year earlier if he had not taken the team to the CBI championship against Marshall…

From a GBPG article on Coach Ryan's contract:
"Ryan must secure annual game guarantees of $300,000 per season. Game guarantees are contests in which a school pays a visiting school to play. UWGB recently scheduled road games against Power 5 schools as a way to increase revenue. If Ryan is unable to get $300,000 of guarantees despite his best efforts, it could result in adjustments to the men’s basketball budget.
But Ryan is entitled to a 30% bonus of the annual game guarantees paid above the minimum $300,000, after reduction for travel and costs. The bonus would be calculated at the end of the season."
I would say that it looks like it isn't the coaches decision to schedule these games and the amount of money he makes from it is far less rewarding to any coach than taking L's.

Cade, Brock, DZ, Garren, D Short and Randy all got to the rim yesterday. Some of those guys several times. Unfortunately the length of the Hoyas really erased a lot of the nice opportunities that they were able to get out of their offense. The base offense generated a lot of good scoring chances that are unlikely to get wiped away in HL play.
It felt like Cade was a little sped up on offense and was trying to figure out a way to score against the length inside. He had a lot of plays that he normally would finish. Speaking of finishing, D Short had a really nice post move for a score against one of the big guys. Seeing that one work gives him something to keep building from.
Of note, Coppin State didn't shoot a better percentage against the Hoyas that GB did. They did shoot a lot more shots, they took 19 more shots than GB. In particular they made 6 more threes in their game than Georgetown made. GB only made 1 more three than Georgetown (on 10 more attempts). Coppin State made 13 compared to GB's 9. Coppin State did had a guy on their team that was a double digit scorer for Penn State last year. For GB to hang in games they have to get shots up, the turnover number is way to high for their pace of play. Coppin State committed 4 more turnovers than GB did but they just played a way faster game so those TO's didn't hurt them as much as they were still able to launch a ton of 3's to stay in the game.

In no way does that absolve Guthrie for any subsequent horrid decision-making.

That first season when Darner got the team into the NCAA Tournament was Fool's Gold and set the stage for a number of mistakes by the two former athletic directors. Not every coach can make the jump from small college to D1 ball. With Kowalczyk and Wardle you had assistants growing into the job. That, clearly is the hope with Ryan. The head coach and relatively new AD started in the biggest hole since Dick Bennett arrived on campus. Perhaps, it is even a bigger one -- Darner's contract, other legacy AD issues, the economy and COVID -- good grief.
The money games have to happen to get out of the hole and grease the gears. It's just a fact of life. The best you can hope for in these games is a classroom learning experience. The Nix won't see this level of length and overall athleticism in Horizon League play. I look for moments in these buy games and there were several. Ryan's recruiting has improved during every cycle. Will the coaches be able to do anything with those players. The jury is out, but the start of the process is bringing in, developing and keeping talent.
I'm still giving the regime a Mulligan for now.
