Some observations and stats from yesterday: -Brock Heffner is like a untagged puppy with too much energy. He doesn't sit down while out of the game and stretches/paces around at the end of the bench wearing to get back in. It's funny and great to see -The team has much more of a feel and look of encouragement and energy from the bench as well. More passion and comradery -The reason this game was close was really due to not making shots and having too many perimeter touches only on offense. Some of the stats will tell that story I think. St Norbert played their butt off and had a good amount of fans in the building since there in town Stats: 9/16 from 2 point range, 56% 6/27 from 3, 22% 14/26 from the line, 54% 30 total rebounds, 3 offensive 4 staeals 7 blocks 11 turnovers Scorers: 0 with 11pts 1 with 4 pts 3 with 14pts 4 with 5pts 5 with 3pts 11 with 2pts (from the line) 21 with 4pts 24 with 4pts 55 with 3pts Some 3's were half way down, FT shooting was more of an issue IMO as we could have stretched the lead multiple times but didn't capitalize. A few more shots go down it's a different game I really liked what I saw from Clarence Cummings he’s a very special player that can do it all. Davin ziegler/Brock heffner brought the intensity and energy. Cade meyer should certainly not only have 2 points they definitely should work the ball inside more. Garren davis didn’t really do anything after scoring 9 points in the first half he doesn’t seem to contribute in other ways on the court without being ball dominant.I would’ve loved to see Jack rose or randy tucker at the sg spot instead.

I'd really love to know how you out talent and out athletic ability 4 guys sitting in or near the lane. The entire concept of the SNC defense is to keep superior talent from getting in the paint for easy hoops. Last year Mitch Listau made the SNC defense look stupid because he made 3's. Unfortunately Listau didn't hit many 3's against an extended defense the rest of the season. If GB isn't making their 3's and then when they do get in the lane they aren't making their free throws it is going to make SNC look really good. Certain guys took longer than others to get used to SNC reaching in for the ball when they tried to get in the lane. Short was in the main rotation last night as he was one of the first guys off of the bench. He also came in late in the game for Cade Meyer when the game was very much on the line. He walled up inside several times on defense and had some rebounds. To your first point, Ziegler and Blake kept trying to go right into the packed line, which would fit the definition of trying to out-athlete them, as opposed to working the ball around. To your point about the threes, yes, when they fail to make shots, it makes the other team look good. The issue is that outside of Garren Davis, I'm not seeing many guys that can reliably make shots on this team, so a lot of teams are going to look good on defense. Trust me, I would love nothing more than to see Short be an impact player this year, but he was not a standout against what should have been a vastly inferior team. I think we win more games than last year, but I think there needs to be an aspect of realism in some fans' mindsets. We are years away from being a true contender in the HL. That said, I still am excited for the season as I do think the team will grow more cohesive and ultimately perform better.

"The greater point being that, talent-wise, the Nix should have been superior, but they weren't." "To your first point, Ziegler and Blake kept trying to go right into the packed line, which would fit the definition of trying to out-athlete them, as opposed to working the ball around."
So which is it? The Phoenix should have been superior due to their talent or Zeigler and Blake kept trying to go right into the packed line and out athlete them instead of working the ball around?

In the Horizon League alone UWM, UDM, OU, PFW and YSU want to have a high possession game. They aren't going to pack the lane because that doesn't lead to high possessions. NKU is going to play their zone regardless. CSU is likely to play up in the passing lanes. The thought that suddenly every team is going to do what SNC did isn't realistic. SNC has a roster built to play a certain way. That way is different than the way the vast majority of the Horizon League has built their roster to fit their own style. GB will have plenty of teams that their offense will work against even if 3's aren't falling at a super high clip.
"Trust me, I would love nothing more than to see Short be an impact player this year, but he was not a standout against what should have been a vastly inferior team."
Don Short played his first collegiate game. I don't see anyone expecting him to be an all conference player as freshman. I think he can make an impact and will be in the rotation. Nobody did anything down low for the Phoenix against SNC but Don did other things in this game when he played. I am not discouraged that he can contribute. There are other ways to contribute besides playing with his back to the basket.

What fans need an aspect of realism? Not a single person on this board or that I can find on social media thinks this team is winning the conference this year. However, there is no reason they can't win somewhere between 8 and 12 conference games and finish around the middle of the pack. As for being years away they are probably two years away from being a true contender. The strategy is to recruit high level high school players. The first group of those players is now in their second year with the program. By the 2024-25 season they will have three classes of players in their second year or more with the program.

Based on what I saw on Tuesday I'm not sure they would win 12 games in the WIAC. 8 conference wins would be a major achievement coming off a dumpster fire of a season last year and an exhibition that certainly didn't do much to instill confidence.

This game was so bad they didn’t even do an article or post the score on the website schedule! What a grade school athletic program to go with a pre school coach

I don't like the hidden box scores. It seems to be a trend around low major basketball right now.
The only justification I will give the hidden box score is releasing info from a D1 scrimmage is not allowed.
I'm not sure why one type of result could be public and the other not.
For example Indiana State would know who scored for GB against SNC. However, GB wouldn't know who scored for Indiana State against YSU.
They should just make everyone release the stats no matter the game type so this isn't an issue.

Oakland beats D2 Rochester by 2.
Are we going to fire Kampe as well after a poor game?
