Was in attendance for the Green/White Scrimmage yesterday. There was a steady NW wind with a temp at about 40 degrees at the start of practice. PERFECT day to take in some basketball with a box of glazers from da Kwik Trip.
Coffee in hand with my better half we brought a friend with his son and some of his friends as we settled in 3 rows up in 102.
Here are some notes that me and the Mrs. jotted down during practice:
Coach Ryan was on the mic describing each drill prior to it's start just to give a little background of what the drill was, why they practice it and some backstory about the nicknames of the drills.
1st - 300 pt drill which is a full court scoring drill.
2nd - Redbird drill (Coach Pritzl's favorite drill w/DePere Head Coach Winchester in attendance) which is a defensive/guarding multiple positions drill focusing on communication/principals for team defense. As the drill went on, the offensive players started to look for shots. Felt like Bo Ryan was running this one which is great for team communication.
3rd - Warrior drill (Named after the Golden State Warriors as Coach feels they run this type of offense the best) which is an offensive drill working on the technique of setting good screens, getting a feel for the shooter and reacting to them coming off of the screen looking for an open look/shot.
Coaches and players introduced themselves one by one and then it was onto the scrimmage portion of practice. Team split up and match ups to start the game:
Green White
#4 #5
#55 #21
#1 #0
#3 #15
#11 #13
Reserves:
#22 #2
#32
#24 Was out and not dressed. On the sidelines with his shades on the entire practice........deal with it
Notes from the first 20 min period:
-Point Guards: #55 & #5
-#1 looked more confident
-Play: #13 had an impressive steal on the perimeter and was fouled by #11 on his way to a potential score
-Play: #21 split a double team on the elbow, found #13 who finished w/ a dunk
-#32 kept looking for 3 pt shot, attacking, trying to get open looks
-Play: #3 w/ a steal & score, utility belt type player, doing all the little things and the dirty work
-Lots of energy overall, more feistiness in general
-#4 is going to be a handful for everyone involved. Vocal and energetic. Gets in on you, was 6 inches away from multiple steals and isn't shy on offense either
-Impressed w/ #5's ball handling, being assertive & quick
-#0 Noticeable confidence with ball in his hand, seems to be under control but aggressive when he wants
-#5 continued to look for shots, not just looking to distribute
-#11 showed his strength in the pain and around the rim
-3pt FG's made by: 1 for #32 (deep from top of the key), 1 for #3, 1 for #1 and 1 for #4. Did not tally all scores but leaders were #11 and #4
Halftime Score: Green 37 White 18
2nd half was a shakeup in rosters with some swaps here and there. Finished with a 10 min period to end the day
Green White
#55 #5
#32 #4
#0 #1
#3 #22
#13 #11
Reserves:
#15 #21
#2
Notes from the last 10 min period:
-#11 had a good offensive move but got called for offensive foul, #13 sold it
-Did some full court press pressure about 20% of time
-#4 presence was noticeable all over the court
-#55 hit clutch 3 in to give Green the lead with 3 seconds left and the eventual win
-3pt FG's made by: 2 for #4, 1 for #55
2nd period score: Green 15 White 14 (only played 10 mins, 30 mins overall)
Practice ended with coach Ryan thanking everyone for coming. The 3 refs that were in attendance then talked to the players about this years focus on things and some points of emphasis that they will be looking for.
Coach Ryan discussed the major focus this year is on Flopping overall. They’re trying to eliminate this from the game. Will be looking for heads being thrown back and will consider it a Class B technical if called where the other team will shoot 1 FT per violation.
Afterwards all the players went to the Phoenix Fund concourse area to sign autographs. There were posters to take, one with the final 4 guys from last years team with the schedule and the other with the entire team that the players were able to sign for the kids.
Overall it was great to see the squad play and get an early sneak preview. The overall feel for this team is just different. There is much more energy flowing just in general IMO. A lot of guys impressed me from Cade to Davis and Cummings just showing a physical maturity to this team that hasn't been real present consistently the last few years. What I didn't expect was the play from the point guard new comers. Love the control and quickness of Blake and how he dictates the pace with the ball in his hands. He also looked for his shot more then I expected. Zeigler for me was the MVP with Cade coming a close 2nd. Cade playing confident and controlling his area of the floor was obvious. Zeigler was just all over the court on both sides of the floor. Defensively getting into guys with his size and athletic ability. On offense he was assertive and comes off like a kid that just doesn't back down. He is always sort of coming at you on both ends of the floor which personally I love to watch.
With that, excited for this season to get going. Bring on St Norbert!
