Two teams going at it without a D-1 win.
We didn’t get a chance to play Robert Morris last year. So our first matchup. Let’s hope we can start off league play with a win.
Also the game is at the Resch which always gives the team a better shot to win.

Robert Morris comes to town and as previously mentioned somebody is getting their first D1 win of the year.
Robert Morris has played a challenging schedule so far. They are probably more competitive than their 0-5 record indicates. They lost at Central Florida by 10, at Kentucky by 40, at Ohio by 14 and at Davidson by 18. They also lost at home to Mount St. Mary’s by 4 in OT.
Robert Morris has been -6 on the glass this year. They have some bigger bodies but only one of those guys, Kahliel Spear is super active on the glass. This is a game that GB should be competitive with on the glass and quite frankly should out rebound them.
RMU takes about 1/3 of their shots from behind the 3 point line, which has been problematic for them because they only hit 30%. Their 3 point defense hasn’t been great as teams have taken about 1/3 of their shots from behind the line and hit 35%. GB shoots 30% of their shots from deep but only has hit on 28%. So there will be lots of opportunities to crash the glass if things stay true to the stats coming in.
A big issue for RMU has been turnovers, they have 61 assists and 71 turnovers on the year. Opponents have 77 assists and 54 turnovers against them. RMU has about half of their buckets assisted and about half of the opponents buckets are assisted. Green Bay has about half their D1 buckets assisted as well but D1 opponents have less than 40% of their buckets assisted against GB. I am not sure what to make of that stat. I don’t know if it means GB has made guys take tough shots on their own or just been smoked 1 on 1. In Florida they did hold the primary scorers for all three teams in check but had other guys step up and beat them.
As I mentioned RMU is led by 6’7” 220 pound Kahliel Spear. He averages 14ppg and 8 rebounds. He does a little of everything, except make 3’s which he is 0-7 on the season. He plays super hard, he makes 50% of his 2 point FG’s and 73% from the line. He is number 1 in the scouting report, kind of a bigger Manny Ansong type player.
Rasheem Dunn has bounced around a lot, he is a 6’2” PG. He averages 10ppg, barely takes any 3’s and only shoots 31% from the field. He has a negative assist to turnover ratio. He can play them in our out of a game.
Michael Green is a 5’10” guard. He shoots 33% from the field, takes lots of 3’s at 28% success rate and scores 9ppg. He too can play them in or out of a game.
Justin Winston is 6’8” and 220 pounds. He is averaging 8 ppg on 44% fg but is also only 5-16 from deep. He is also a turnover machine with 3 assists and 14 turnovers on the year. If I were an RMU fan I would find his game frustrating. His 3 point shot is not pretty, he is a ball stopper on offense and for a dude his size he only gets 3 rebounds per game. Put that another way he gets one rebound every 8 minutes he plays. For his size that isn’t a good thing. Though he will make plays and could get hot, another guy that will play them in or out of a game.
Enoch Cheeks is a 6”3” guard. He is a do everything player. He will get some defensive stats (he plays tough D) and averages 5ppg and 4rebounds. The issue for him is 28% FG. If he ever improves this he will be a very interesting player in this league.
Jaron Williams is a 6’6” forward off the bench. He averages 10&4 on 56% FG shooting. He is 5-16 from behind the line. Seems like a nice weapon to have on the bench.
A wild card is Brandon Stone who just played his first game. He is 6’11”200 pound stretch big man. Given his slight frame his 1 rebound in 10 minutes of game action makes sense. He did score 7 points and have a block in that game. He is a transfer from LaSalle and the kind of guy who isn’t likely to be in the scouting report but could do some things to beat a team.
Lets rebound those missed 3’s and get a D1 win!

Green Bay wins. Back and forth game most of the way, but GB was composed down the stretch and pulled away for the 12 point win.

Wasnt able to watch but followed on the internet. Glad to see we got our first real win tonight. Who stood out to you all the most? How was the crowd? I am sure louder than if this game would of been at the sleepy kress.
Onto YSU, looks like they are in a dog fight with MKE tonight.
Lets get to 2-0 now!
Go Green Bay

It was a small crowd but it did get noisy in the last 5+ minutes. An enjoyable game to watch. RM tried to get physical at times but our players didn't back down.
They played within their system and a RM player getting a back court foul/T? resulting in 2 free throws and we keep the ball was the changing point near the end.

Green Bay did a nice job with RM's Zone most of the night. Ansong dominated the short corner and both Kellogg and Kirchman were able to get quality touches in the paint. Stieber made the offense go and you could see a noticeable difference with the zone when he was out and Kamari McGee ran the point. Good learning experience for McGee.
Robert Morris had a interesting team. Their zone had plenty of holes and it didnt seem like they did a very good job of sharing the ball. Winston had an awful looking shot but found a way to make some 3s to keep things close for awhile. I would be shocked if RMU finishes ahead of the Phoenix in the Horizon. 22 Horizon league games and there will be plenty of opportunities to win games and keep things interesting in the league...
1989 at the Resch- I sure hope things improve attendance wise
Side note: I have the ESPN+ replay on and it had the Radio guys (Kuklinski and Rabeor) coverage on. I noticed that nobody was sitting at the TV table last night in the Resch when I was there. Has this been done before- hopefully it was a one off and a scheduling issue with Stefaniak and Barkley. The radio guys do a great job but I do not care for the teams that combine them. They are different calls and ways to describe the game to the audience.

Even though GB didn't make a lot of 3's in this game, just 5 of 18 for 28%, they did shoot 50% overall which is a big improvement. They had a ton of easy looks right by the basket. I didn't expect RMU to play a zone defense, I am not sure if GB did either. However, they were able to enter the ball to the high post and then hit the short pass to the baseline for Ansong almost the entire game. RMU was really aggressive on the ball and didn't really cover up the baseline until it was too late in the game. Ansong was 11 of 15 for 23 points.
Also, a shout out to GB's big guys. Kellogg had 10 points and 5 rebounds. He finished with both hands and made a pair of free throws which he was scuffling with to start the year. I thought he played good defense on Spear, who was 1-9 from the field. The other big guy to impress was Cem. He had 9 points and 4 assists. He was great passing out of the high post against the zone.
It was good for Lucas and Mitch to hit 3-6 from deep. If those guys can consistently hit shots it makes things so much easier for the offense. The offense for GB made 28 field goals and had 20 assists, that is a good ratio. They 20 assists compared to 10 turnovers which is also a good ratio. Ivory had two turnovers in a short period of time but he did stuff the other stats with 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and a block. He found a way to contribute even when he wasn't scoring.
The crowd was listed as 1989. That is not up to where it should be but was the largest of the 6 Horizon League games played yesterday. I made a big stink this week about the Kress and not being able to draw 2000 people. I would LOVE for the people of NE Wisconsin to prove me wrong and make a great home court advantage against YSU on Saturday night.

Great to get that first D1 win of the year and even better to actually hold onto a lead and close a team out after so many missed opportunities already this season.
Seems like RMU going to a zone kind of caught everybody by surprise. GB was able to do a great job of making adjustments and find holes while RMU never really made any changes until late in the game. Can't remember the last time GB dominated in the paint like they did last night.
I will say it is kind of amusing seeing Robert Morris get the benefit of the doubt in preseason predictions since joining the HL - some outlets had them as high as 6th or 7th this season - but they have been extremely underwhelming. They look like they are heading for another bottom tier finish again this season.
On to Youngstown!

RMU has more athleticism than GB failed to play as a team and the coaching staff failed to adjust as Steiber and Company picked apart the RMU zone. The Nix are still learning to play together. We saw progress last night.
