I'm genuinely impressed with Darner's ability to get the most out of the players. The loss today was tough but look at what we have seen this season from individuals many of us thought would be career bench warmers. The chemistry is coming together and the system is something to believe in. I think the Darner Nix team can play with any mid-major in the country. That is an accomplishment considering that we're a half year into the latest coaching staff.
I'm seeing a maturation that was missing too often in the past.

Agreed, team is performing so much better than the start of the season, shooting %'s are up, FT shooting is up. I was thinking 10 wins, perhaps they can get to 15 wins. Arrow appears to be pointing up.

Agreed. I thought GB played bad and looked sloppy for the first 3/4's of the game. I take the fact that they had a chance (should have won) to win as a good sign. They should improve but still lots to work on.

I just really want to see better defense played. No one ever gets help if their man beats them one on one and the Rockets had far too many second chance points. The refs were so brutal in this one and I was genuinely disappointed with the Phoenix fan base and the people in the area for not showing up to this game. There should've been far more people there but it felt like I was watching an SNC scrimmage with the sparse attendance.

Was hoping to be able to read through a third continuous thread without comments from knightlyfe. Unfortunately, the Phoenix lose, so he is back.
The fact is, the Phoenix are continuing to get better. It's much more of a team game now and guys are getting more comfortable with the system. Win or lose these games, it doesn't matter. Just need to be fresh and peaking for HL Tourney.
I understand this is a transition year and I can handle that they won't look great every game. It's nothing I'm going to complain about, I'll leave that for knight.
Keep improving Phoenix.

I was pleased with the effort and agree with Tulsa regarding the coaches getting the most out of the players. The fact that the shooting has improved both from the floor and the line is not something I thought the coaches could impact but I believe they have. Toledo is a good team and the game could have gone either way.
This did not look like a sixth place Horizon league team to me.

Well that was a punch in the gut.
Things that I see as positives would be Fouse's shooting, Botz's best offensive game, Kanter scoring down low and everyone but Love being solid shooting. I don't think Love took bad shots, he just had a bad day. He missed a backdoor easy lay in so something wasn't working for him.
Things that I see as negatives would be Cooper's turnovers, two missed free throws after they had a late 6 point lead, a lack of a number one scoring option down the stretch (Cooper turnover and Small late 3 were the last two sequences for GB).
Things I don't understand would be Botz being asked to guard Boothe while Kanter was guarding Adaway. In that stretch GB's defense was scored on at will by those two guys in the first half. This comes on the heels of Botz having to guard Fiorentinos unsuccessfully on Monday agaisnt SIUE. I don't think it was a lack of effort by Botz in either case, he was just not big enough for either guy.
Things that might be interesting. Hurdle received his first DNP-CD, any word why? Jespersen was wearing a walking boot, is it a serious injury? Seth Evans is a graduate assistant for Toledo. Recruited by TK, played in GB for TK then Wardle before finishing up with Linc. He certainly had to feel weird with the circumstances.
Things that make me sick. TK jumping around and pumping his fists facing the crowd while his team celebrated the shot. Maybe it was him looking for family and friends but it came across as a big middle finger to the GB fans. He looked like a child and poor sport. I used to have blinders on to that kind of thing but 6 years later I think I understand where a lot of the hate was coming from in his time at GB.
Toledo looks like they have a solid team so losing on a buzzer beater is not shameful. They didn't play their best today and didn't play well offensively down the stretch but the early season effort issues are gone while the half court offense has improved. With only 2 games in the next 2 weeks against weak teams I expect GB to really starting hitting their stride with the extra practice time and hopefully 2 wins that will be coming.
Edited to add: Toledo scored at the end of each half, I don't recall TK having that type of execution in 8 years in GB!!

One last thing, GB was on the wrong side of several block/charge calls. If the stat is something like 90% of all block/charge calls are blocks then GB is getting ripped off as several of these have been called charges both at EIU and then again today. On paper 2/3 of this crew is high end.
I am a big Kipp Kissinger fan, normally I find his work to be spot on.
Terry Wymer is a final four ref from last year but he also lives in the Toledo suburbs so I don't think he should be working Toledo games.
Paul Szelc is an NCAA tournament official from last year but I think he was very weak today and really other times I have watched him. I think it shows how quick the officiating pool dwindles in talent as well if this guy is one of the top guys.

I wish I could say the coaches are getting the most out of the players, but thats light years from the truth. Brutal defensive effort yesterday, despite tons of prep time. This roster was born to defend, but the staff wastes too much prep time on gimmicks, and forget games are won with half court defense. Bad loss on the home floor.

Toledo is going to be pretty good this year, while we are in a transition year with new players and new coaches. Toledo needed to rely on a last second 3 from a guy who hadn't made a shot all night to win. I thought it was a good entertaining showing by a team that's rightfully still trying to figure things out.

It is never acceptable to blow a 6pt lead with 2:30 to go at home. Missed FTs (a big front end miss by Botz) and poor half court D down the stretch. Overall i was pleased and saw more improvements across the board. Regarding Hurdle not playing, I think Linc had some practice/film time to see hurdle isnt in there rotation. Looks like a solid 9 man rotation at this point. Cooper's worst game of the season and it seemed like Linc had a long leash for him when he was making mulitple mistakes. Toledo's one/two punch of Boothe and Johnson were tough to stop. Boothe made everything in the first half and Johnson got into the lane too easily in the 2nd half. Now time for finals and more practice time.

I also could not believe how Coach K. reacted after his player made the game winning shot. You would have tought he won his first NCAA tourney game which after watching his team play will not happen for a long long time. Outside of two players i did not think Toledo was very good. They all seemed to whine and act like they were being treated unfairly. The only thing that was unfair was the Charge vs. blocking calls that seemed to go Toldeo's way. In all my years of watching basketball that was the worse i have seen. IMHO it seemed like the Toledo coaching staff felt they got a raw deal from Green Bay and had a score to settle. Not sure what that was but sure seemed like it to me.
As for Green Bay, the defense needs to get better in the half court set up. They are not helping fast enought or at all which gave Toledo some easy buckets. I have seen improvement from each game and definitely think Linc has them headed in the right direction. To me he is a better coach then both Tod and Brian when they got here. He still has to learn but again i think the program is going in the right direction.
I still cant figure out why Love would give that ball up on their last posession. As a senior and team leader he should have taken the shot.
If i had to pick between Toledo and Green Bay's roster, i would take the Green Bay roster as it has more potential towards the end of this year and into next year. PMCK is in his 6th year there and i do not think he has a very good roster.

It seems like every game there is one breakout player and one guy who looks like he's never played the game before. Ride the hot hand should be the way to go.
