Their head coach (Keith Dambrot) coached Lebron James at St Vincent-St Marys HS. They are 3-1 with wins over Arkansas and Cleveland State. So far in the season they have 9 players averaging over 10 minutes a game and 5 players averaging 9pts or more a game. They have plenty of size to complement their 5'11 PG, who leads the team in scoring. Good test for GB at this point in the season. If they guys come out and play with the effort they had coming out of the 2nd half on Sunday, it should be a good game.

It looks like Akron shoots a lot of 3 pointers so I will be curious to see how GB defends this. This is a good test and would really be a nice win to secure.

Huge win!!! Akron is a really good team. Congrats to Coach Darner on his first D1 win.
Great to see the coach let these guys play the way they need to play to be successful. There'll be plenty of time to implement that other stuff later. Great to see them let these guys do what they do and grind out a win with a tough half court defense that left them in position to also rebound. That's Phoenix basketball!

Good to finally get a win. I look at this year's Phoenix team as being just a little bit short in talent so I'll enjoy any win they can get.
Don't get me wrong, there is SOME talent out there, but there's nobody close to Sykes or Brown on this year's team. I haven't seen a ton of the freshman PG, but he does look like someday he could be really good in the glimpses I've seen of him.

There were so many mind numbing attempts at shots by the Phoenix in this game and yet I don't care about that one bit. That is the stuff I can live with as the guys are learning what is a good shot and what isn't for Coach Darner. What I was really impressed with in this game and upset about in past games was the effort. GB really got after the glass, everybody was going hard to get rebounds. They just looked like they were working so much harder and smarter than in the past. While they are figuring out how to play they should never lack effort and this win was all about effort especially with the size advantage Akron had.
The two biggest negatives were the obvious disaster at the free throw line. Some guys like Love looked to have tired legs while Lowe must have had tired eyes?!?! The other was Cooper giving up a few attempts at corner 3's, he was getting a little lost defensively.
All in all I am happy for the guys to get a solid win under their belt, they certainly didn't wilt when the going was getting tough. If they keep playing hard I can be a happy fan while they figure out how to play smart and together for Coach Darner. Now with that said they have two very winnable road games coming up so it is a good opportunity to build momentum.

Ehhh.... horrid shooting, meager ball handling and bad mental mistakes. Luckily, Akron didn't show up to play either. We have two cupcake games after this to build some momentum, which will be good, but we really need to play better defense and shoot the ball better both at the line and from beyond the arc.

I loved the effort that i saw tonight from the team, they forced Akron into some bad shots and won the rebounding battle against a bigger team. Akron is a better team IMO but didnt come to play tonight what so ever. Great win for the guys, ugly game to watch. I told my friend that this was the equivalent of a 46-44 game playing at the pace of the old regime. 16 boards for Fouse and a great job of running the point by Anthony Brown were my two biggest positive takeaways.

After having season tickets for 20~years I skipped the 2 nondiv. 1 games. They just don't excite me. What I saw last night does. They played hard and yes made a lot of mistakes but effort was there. The biggest thing player wise from last year is Small. Last year he looked like a middle linebacker. This year he can shoot and play for longer periods of time. Great effort guy and we'll need him when Fouse leaves. He's still muscular but with out the extra pounds. He's quicker and could be a star, where last year I would have said he was a career role player. Of the new comers Brown and Cooper are players and will help. Future= they need to finish plays around the basket (probably missed a dozen layups). 2nd they need to improve FT's. If they don't we will lose some games that should be wins. GB is a work in progress but I can see a future for them if they can fix some problems.

Last night proved the Nix can play defense against a good mid-major team. The key I'll be looking for is player development. This should be an interesting season to follow Green Bay. Playing a deeper bench should help prevent a late season fade.

Congratulations on an important win.
The team has plenty of talent. It'll get better. It would help if they could figure the FT thing out. It's pretty important that they do so stat.
