The NCAA released 2014-2015 attendance numbers today.
The Horizon League's average attendance was down slightly (-1.6%) to 2,854 fans per game compared to a year ago.
Here's how the league schools finished up:
School...........14-15.....13-14......% Change
Wright State.....4,510.....4,117........+9.54%
Green Bay........3,581.....3,979........-10.0%
Milwaukee........3,134.....2,847........+10.08%
Valparaiso........3,066.....2,833........+8.22%
UIC.................2,913.....3,010........-3.22%
Detroit.............2,539.....2,472........+2.71%
Oakland............2,273.....2,142........+6.12%
Youngstwn St...2,039.....2,326........-12.33%
Northern Ky......2,016.....1,845........+9.27%
Cleveland St.....1,996.....2,236........-10.73%
Some thoughts:
- Wright State has led the league in attendance each year since Butler left. Good basketball fans down there in Dayton.
- Green Bay was hurt by not having a marquee home game this year. In 2013-2014, both Wisconsin and Virginia played at the Resch, which helps inflate that number. GB averaged 3,084 during the 2012-2013 season, so this past season is still significantly better than it has been in the past. Hopefully they bring back a Bud Light Night or two again this season.
- Milwaukee's increase was aided by a 10,120 sellout home game against Wisconsin
- UIC was expectedly down after a few atrocious seasons, but there seems to be a new energy to that program and it should translate at the gate this upcoming season.
- It'll be interesting to see how the Horizon League move helps with NKU's attendance. Hopefully they can develop a rivalry with Wright State.
- Cleveland State....wow that's a pathetic number. That program is seriously headed in the wrong direction and fast.
