Without a doubt, Keifer has been the most electrifying player in the program's history. After seeing his rise from an unknown to now signing an NBA contract, I cannot help but think that stories like this might trickle down through GB more often than ever before. The last two years we have had guys sign pro contracts which is elevating our exposure on the national stage. My question is, how long will it be before we see another Skyes type player come through GB? By Sykes-type, I do not necessarily mean the absurd amount of athleticism, but rather a single guy who can pack the Resch, run the conference and maybe, eventually sign an NBA contract. In your opinions, do you think that there is anyone on the current roster due for a massive breakout, do we have to wait a few years into the Darner regime to produce one of these guys, or do we have to wait until the Darner regime is over as his system might not be conducive to the rise of players like Sykes?
Personally, after I watch his highlight tapes more and more, I think not Charles Cooper (the presumed heir to the throne) but Jamar Hurdle will be the eventual center of attention on the team. Unless he makes an unprecedented meteoric rise, I do not see him going NBA, but I think high-level Europe is a realistic chance. His athleticism and "wow" factor alone could be enough to pack the Resch by his second year imo. Sykes at this point is waaaaay beyond his level at this point, but I think the conditions are right for Hurdle to be the face of the team and get a little national recognition.
Keifer was without a doubt a unique case, but I think the momentum he has left us with can give rise to his successors.
Maybe this is crazy talk as I am feeling the offseason blues at this point and this is all wishful thinking, but I really do feel that someone in the near future can take over the "Sykes role."
What do you all think?
