It's time for the big rivalry game. Time for the Phoenix to make a statement. Milwaukee's veteran team took advantage of younger squads with their experience early, but their lack of talent has caught up to them as the season continue's. With a win the Nix can move to just a half game behind UWM. Hard to believe when you consider Milwaukee was 6-1 in conference at 1 point. A win could also spring Green Bay past both Detroit and Wright State in the standings, pending the outcome of their games Saturday. Great having another game on TV, this one as on Time Warner Sports 32 (in HD on 1332 in NE Wisconsin), and is also on ESPN3. A huge crowd would put the Phoenix on track to surpass last season's average attendance. Be sure to check out Brian Dickman's outstanding preview here.

If you read the Milwaukee board, most there are realists and understand their team is just mediocre. However, one prominent Panther poster is running the injury excuses hard. Lame. Nobody is healthy at this point in the season. We never got to witness Williams it Turner healthy this year. They both played injured before they went out. Brown had dealt with injuries. We never whined about it, it's part of the game. UWM is just playing different upperclassmen now, it's now like they've been forced to play young.
I wonder what the excuse will be after they get thumped Saturday?

Cant wait for this game. Dont forget its Alec Brown bobblehead day for the first 1,000 fans.
Side note: the blackout cancer idea is really great, but why do it against Milwaukee? Black is their color. The first 200 students at the game get a free black t-shirt, it'll look like there are a ton of uwm fans there

I also am excited for the game and feel if the Phoenix play their game they will come out with the W. I know Milwaukee has had some injuries as have the Phoenix but I believe we are the more talented team from top to bottom.

Can't wait to get started today. The Gamer Project, which has correctly predicted 18 of 19 Green Bay games this year, has the Phoenix winning by 5. I think it will be by more than that. Should be a huge, loud crowd, with numerous possible future Phoenix also in attendance.
The Green Bay defense will smother Milwaukee, we'll win the battle on the glass, and will have a big advantage in points in the paint.

Sort of a fun game to watch, but the Phoenix defense was awful to say the least. Lots of open 3 point looks for UWM and they mostly hit them.
Wardle is going to have to figure out how to get this team to play defense better, or no matter how much talent he has out there, it's going to bite them in the butt against any sort of good teams.

I went to both the men's and women's games today. Even though (or perhaps because) the women won in a blow out, the men's was more entertaining.
I feel like the men's team is snake bit, Milwaukee in both games this year hit their free throws while the rest of the year they have been a very poor free throw shooting team.
Why can't Green Bay get someone in the face of the three point shooter. Most of the shots were from the corner and were wide open. When Ryan Allen hits a three pointer, you know you are in for a long day.

I wonder what the excuse will be after they get thumped Saturday? I am the poster who is hitting the "injury" button hard. Milwaukee is diminished by its injuries, and we have not been playing to the level our team is capable of playing. Your Phoenix are missing Jarvis Williams and Daniel Turner, and sit at 9-13, 5-7 in conference. Are you trying to make the argument that Milwaukee wouldn't be better if any one of Williams, Allen, Haarsma or Kelm weren't battling injuries, or they weren't missing McCallum, Lonnie Boga or Evan Richard? Because if that's the case, then Green Bay wouldn't have a better record than 9-13 and 5-7, and I don't think I'd argue that case. I think that both teams have worse records than they would if they had some of these players healthy - Wardle having Jarvis Williams or Daniel Turner to go to in times of need would be a huge boon for the Phoenix, and I'm surprised that you would suggest that Milwaukee's injuries are just an excuse when GB would certainly be a better basketball team with Williams and Turner in the fold. And my excuse is the Panthers won by simplifying the offense and getting better shots, which led to a much better percentage.

Saturday was the first game I've been able to attend in a couple years. A few things really stood out: 1. Brown and Sykes are at a level by themselves. Everybody else on the team look like underclassmen (probably because they are). 2. Cougill hurts GB on defense at least as much as he helps on offense. His slow defensive rotations cost GB a minimum of 20 points in that game. 3. Attendance was really poor. I was fully expecting a sell out. Not only was the Resch only 2/3 full, but the crowd was dead. 4. Williams from UW sluM is a thug. He is everything that is wrong with the modern day me-first college basketball players. I felt greasy after watching that guy play. 5. GB shouldn't leave #14 open at the corner. He made EVERYTHING. 6. The Phoenix have a bright future. The illusions of grandure I had about them turning the corner this season were premature.

Saturday was the first game I've been able to attend in a couple years. A few things really stood out: 1. Brown and Sykes are at a level by themselves. Everybody else on the team look like underclassmen (probably because they are). I think you're giving too little attention to Kam Cerroni. He was very good Saturday, and got to the line based on his ability to draw contact on the shot. I will say this: Brown and Sykes are not on the same level. Brown is very good. Sykes is better. 2. Cougill hurts GB on defense at least as much as he helps on offense. His slow defensive rotations cost GB a minimum of 20 points in that game. If any Phoenix fans are aware, WSU had a player named Ronnie Thomas who graduated in I believe '09. Cougill is almost a carbon copy of Thomas, except he rebounds more than Thomas ever did. He even looks like the guy. 3. Attendance was really poor. I was fully expecting a sell out. Not only was the Resch only 2/3 full, but the crowd was dead. We were discussing this on the ride home, and I think it's attributable to the shadow cast by the Packers. I'd say that even though the Packers were long gone from the playoffs at this point, a lot of people were gearing up for the Super Bowl and didn't even know the game was on (or didn't care). The crowd was quiet for much of the game, but they did pick up at key points - for instance, when the score got close. 4. Williams from UW sluM is a thug. He is everything that is wrong with the modern day me-first college basketball players. I felt greasy after watching that guy play. Thanks for letting us know that. I totally forgot my degree came from a school called "UW sluM." Must have been some real shitty college to churn out the CEO's of Northwestern Mutual, Harley Davidson, WE Energies, Foley and Lardner, and M&I Bank. Our alumni have won Academy Awards, Pulitzer Prizes, and a Winston Cup. They have championships from all levels of international soccer and they count among them two Heads of State. But I guess we all just went to class with our forties, selling crack in the union and carrying guns because we're afraid of going to class without packing. That kind of thinly veiled racism shows just what kind of person you are. Oh yeah, about Kaylon Williams. You know nothing about the man. You know of the one mistake he made in his life, the one he wakes up with every day and goes to sleep with every night. Of everything else, you know nothing outside of what you saw on the basketball court Saturday. He's such a me-first player that he ranks seventh in the nation in assists. 5. GB shouldn't leave #14 open at the corner. He made EVERYTHING. Gulley has been terribly inconsistent this year at most aspects of his game, but three-point shooting doesn't seem to be one of them. He's shooting 40.2% from beyond the arc. 6. The Phoenix have a bright future. The illusions of grandeur I had about them turning the corner this season were premature. You are absolutely right on this point. Brian Wardle at the helm is a good thing. Alec Brown, Kam Cerroni and especially Kiefer Sykes make up a wonderful nucleus of talent to build around the next two years. It's much easier for a staff to recruit when their best talent is young, because players see that and see that they could be the piece that completes the puzzle. I have no doubt that's a big reason why Jordan Fouse committed.

That kind of thinly veiled racism shows just what kind of person you are. First off, it is a joke. Which you would get if you didn't have your panties all in a bunch about "The University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee! Where the Future Leaders of America Attend! The greatest university in the history of the world!!!" Perhaps you are not one of those CEOs who come from UWM, since you seem to spend all your time trolling other teams message boards. However, since you played the card, you'll have to explain how that is a 'racist' comment. I'll give you the dictionary definition (please don't confuse this with the urban dictionary). "A heavily populated urban area characterized by substandard housing and squalor." If race is the first thing that jumps to your mind, than perhaps you have some stereotype issues to deal with of your own. Good for him on his assists. I was speaking more towards the fact that he was dressing down his teammates every time they made a mistake. Or he would commit a turnover and stare someone down on his team. Everytime he made a play he had something to say to Sykes. But when Sykes took him to the hole twice in a row he shut up for some reason.

Ronnie Thomas and Brennan Cougill do look alike and do shoot too many 3's. After that the comparison ends and Cougill is a way better player. While I would agree that Cougill does give up a lot of points defensively he is a much better rebounder, passer and shot blocker than Thomas ever was.
I was way off base on Cerroni. Early in the year I thought he was a guy that wasn't going to be very good. He has worked very hard and really gained confidence. I thought Evan Richard was better and would be way better over time. Richard has a pretty high ceiling but once he gets healthy it will be a big leap for him to contribute at the level that Cerroni does. No knock on Richard at all, I'm just really impressed with how far Kam has come.
I think Alec Brown is completely under rated for his shot blocking and rebounding. It isn't just that he is tall but rather that he has good timing and anticipation. On offense I actually think they need to stop posting him up so much. Let Cougill do that, he is strong enough to finish when Brown is not. However, Brown in the high post facing up is a good shooter and can move with the ball. Brown is used like Andrew Bogut which is to say in my opinion he is not always used to his strengths. Both guys struggle in the post up game despite having some moves. They both seem to have their best success when away from the hoop facing up.
I was sitting very close to the court on Saturday and what makes Kaylon Williams disliked by many GB fans isn't that he is a bad player. In fact he is really impressive to watch. However, he has too much swagger for my liking. He walks around like he owns the place and he is always running his mouth. It is hard not to root against him. Yet if he was on GB I know I would be singing his praises as a great passer and a clutch player.
As for the game itself too many defensive breakdowns. uwm hit several open 3's from both corners, can't let them do that. Plus uwm seemed to get a lot more of the loose balls.
Last, Kyle Ingram is officially on my most hated officials list. It didn't cost GB the game, officials rarely do. He missed calls both ways although gb was negative on his whistle. However, the way he officiated the game he just seemed to be really focused on catering to jeter and the uwm bench. He was always interacting with them, it just gets frustrating to see during a rivalry game that isn't going my way as a fan.

I noticed that the whole crew was over by the Panthers bench during every stoppage. Pretty unprofessional when it doesn't go both ways. Most of the close calls went Milwaukee's way. I think that is because they earned them. When you aren't physically strong, and you careless with the ball, officials on every level will not help you out with their whistles. As this team develops they will start getting those close calls. One thing that annoys me about college basketball is that they seem inclined to copy the pros on their officiating. You can bear hug someone down low and get away with it, but a hand check on the perimeter gets you a whistle.
