This is always a huge game for GB's Chicago area players. Look for highlight reel stuff.

Exactly what we expected tonight, with one surprise. Phoenix win 78-55, with lots of dunks while holding UIC to 35% shooting.
The surprise was 12 minutes going to Kerem Kanter. He was solid on the offensive end. He's a strong passer, finishes around the hoop, and could provide another outside shooting option. He's a work in progress defensively, but he didn't need to defend much against UIC.

Pretty good game overall, sloppy at times but luckily we played a pretty forgiving opponent. The big issue I really had with this game was that the bench guys outside of Kanter barely saw any time despite a 30 point game for most of the second half. This would have been a PERFECT opportunity to mix in the bench guys one or two at a time with the rest of the starters and get actual meaningful minutes. Instead, they (Uwadiae, Findlay, Humphrey and Small) were given a token two or three minutes all together once the game had lost all of its fire. I really don't understand the philosophy when it comes to playing time on this team, especially since the starters as a whole really didn't look that sharp whatsoever. Granted the guys who got the token minutes looked sloppy too, but that is to be expected when you come off of the bench after 38 minutes of inactivity. You guys all know how I feel about Wardle, but this is one thing I think we can all agree on. I mean what does that say to those guys who practice hard all week or even all year for that matter, and they are rewarded by being allowed to dribble the clock out in a blowout. This team does not look the same as last year mentally (in a bad way) and this is probably one of the contributing factors. Emotionally everyone looks flat and it takes a whole team to get each other fired up, more playing time for some of the guys could do just the trick.

I wish the bench players would also have gotten more time as some of the starters could have used some rest.
Some thoughts on how some players looked last night;
Sykes jump shot looks like he is pushing it a bit and my guess is that he may be getting a worn down a bit so some rest would have been nice. Greg Mayes I don't think i would sit him at all right now. He is on fire and is playing some amazing basketball. AMac appears to have hit a bit of a wall and hope he can snap out of it Friday as we will need him. Fouse never seems to get tired but is being called for some ticky tack fouls. His steal on the press was vintage Jordan. Love is playing with confidence but needs to penetrate and kick the ball out a little more. He is shooting it very well but is a good passer and would like to see him do it a little more.

It was nice to see Kanter get some minutes in a situation where he could be successful. I felt like he wasn't a liablity against Wiegand and gave us a boost on offense. That being said our rotation outside of 7 guys(lowe and francis off the bench) is a crap shoot.
Overall the guys did a nice job taking care of business against a poor team. Love the way that Mays attacted the basket early and often, Keifer got many people involved and AMac hit a couple of threes from the corner that looked like confident strokes

I thought GB had a great start to the game in terms of energy and trying to impose their style. They had great post touches with Fouse and Mays. They stalled a little bit on offense after that but their activity level didn't drop. They were active, rebounding and pushing. It felt like they were going to wear UIC out which they did.
I am okay with happened in terms of when the starters came out. C Love played 25 minutes, Mays played 28, Fouse played 25 and Sykes played 33. I guess Sykes could have sat more. They had Francis, Lowe and Kanter all contribute in the first half. Botz played in the first half as well. Wardle said in his post game conference that he has confidence in every guy to play and contribute and that match ups will determine who plays.
I know it is only 6 games but Mays is on fire. Wardle looks like a genius for pulling the plug on him against Chicago State. He is averaging 16.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in league play.
A big game on Friday, I am hoping for a great atmosphere.

I forgot to mention one thing after this game. Howard Moore has to go. Not only does he not have the it factor he has no vision. Jay Harris is a nice player but he is a 5th year senior. Their team isn't good. There is no reason Harris should be taking minutes from younger players like McGuire. The reason UIC stinks under Moore is he keeps going for the quick fix with JUCO's and graduate transfers and never builds any 4 year players. Those transfers should be brought in to round out a team not be the only hope of saving it.
While I am on this topic, YSU has to move on from Slocum right?? They are 0-7 in league play showing no signs of life!
