I am happy to see this, I think he has done a good job and deserves an extension. Hopefully it does help with recruiting. At a minimum it at least takes away some uncertainty.

But it doesn't prevent him from bolting next year or any other year. My guess is he's gone after next year as long as they don't flame out late in the season like they did this year. Does Barone's promotion make him next in line for the head job?

Poetic justice. And a deserved vote of confidence or reward.
Remember one year ago he was under fire because of the player mistreatment stories?
He conducted himself with class and dignity and said all the right things. Was publicly assigned a mentor (Dick Bennett) which if happened in my job I would probably take as an insult and barely tolerate, but Wardle took it and ran with it and was just totally classy about it in anything he said to the media.
I really look at this as the final chapter to that whole thing. Wardle deserves great respect for pushing through a really tough time.

Also if you remember Dick said he probably couldn't Coach in the current era. So what you said is very high praise and I agree. Someone talked about GB flaming out, well if your 2 best players get hurt at the end of the season good things don't happen. One for the last 6 weeks of the season and the other in the playoffs your fate is determined. One thing I did enjoy was some great basketball games. The injuries we've no control over. They happened at the very worst time for Alec and Keifer. Al's knee injury certainly would have made a difference too, I saw some nice flashes.

Great to see the new AD get this done. Coach Wardle gets a nice raise, thanks need to go out to those that made this possible. I thought this was going to happen any day, as they've recently started looking to schedule a 2 for 1 with a high major. That's the kind of move you make when the staff is thinking longterm, as it's of little benefit until year 3.
There's simply a lot of stability in the program right now. I wonder what excuse the detractors are going to come up with now? I guess they've all disappeared.

Does Barone's promotion make him next in line for the head job? This doesn't stop him from taking a major promotion, but it does stop him from "bolting" like Kowalczyk did. If/when Wardle leaves it will be to a major job. The silver lining to that is Green Bay puts a provision into their contract that the outgoing coach has to play a return game in Green Bay. Kowalczyk didn't have to because he made a lateral move (at best). Interesting question on whether Barone's promotion puts him in line to be the next head coach. Does he have the personality to be the lead man? I don't doubt his knowledge or vision. I take issue with the statement that the team "flamed out" this year. Did the Phoenix "flame out" in Tony Bennett's senior year? They had a great year but lost in the conference tourney when John Martinez went down with injury, missed the big dance, and then lost in the NIT. That was crushing, but I never considered that team a failure. It was a great team, just the same as this team.

There will always be cheap shots on message boards. No the team did not flame out. Think of this image -- a race car is going 185 miles per hour and blows out two tires. (Brown and Sykes) Chances are you will not win the Indy 500 or Taladaga that way. One of the posters above really has a "Catch 22" situation for Green Bay, Wardle and fans. Yes if Brian puts together a solid streak of season he will probably leave. Wouldn't you? Did Dick Bennett leave? Lets enjoy the ride and congratulate the man and the team. They beat the ACC Champs, they beat Marquette's Elite 8 team and have been giving Bo Ryan stomach aches. All this under Wardle.
GB has three assistant coaches right now that I would not be uncomfortable seeing moving up to head coach.

You're right, flame out was the wrong way to characterize it. Wasn't meant as a cheap shot. Just still bummed about the way it ended. Felt like such a letdown after all the buildup. I just meant that if they don't have the problems they had late in the season, he'll probably get another job. This team did not flame out the way some of TK's teams did late in the year.

Congrats to both Wardle and Barone on their new deals. It was good to get those guys some more money or responsibility but without having to break the bank. I agree this certainly has to help recruiting and scheduling. I look at having very little in the buyout if he leaves as the cost of doing business. Since GB isn't financially able to pay more than part of his compensation is from a one sided buyout. He has the security of knowing he will make at least 1 million dollars over the next five years and option to move to a major gig if that becomes available.
I would hope that maybe a recruit signs soon. Wardle mentioned he was on the phone on Wednesday talking about this with potential recruits.
Also, any insight on where that 2 for 1 sits now? I was on the basketball traveler board and most high majors are looking for 200 or better RPI teams. I would think that GB would be an attractive team to play. They get a decent team to play at home but most likely beat and by the time they play on the road Sykes and crew will be gone.

Congrats to all involved. Coaches Wardle and Barone both deserved what they received and the AD had the did a tremendous job of increasing the pay. It could have not have been easy for her to get more money from a school with a small budget.
I remember when Coach Wardle interviewed for the job and said something to the extent, I know what the job involves and still want it. To me he has definitely walked the walk. Again congrats to him.
