I know fans get all over these guys. I also know these guys are contracted by the game and don't work for the league. In looking at the box scores of the NCAA tournament I noticed names that I see working the HL. So I guess in the eyes of the NCAA not all of the officials that are able to work the HL suck.
These are guys I noticed working and the number of HL games they did (HL home games. both non con and conference play):
Gerry Pollard 3
Tom O'Neill 2
Mike Sanzere 6 games, 3 were home for WSU.
Lamar Simpson 6
Lamont Simpson 8
John Higgins 2 and the HL was lucky to get him, he is very solid.
Chris Beaver 8
Kipp Kissinger 8 and he has worked both days of the tournament at his venue. I think he is one of the better guys the HL can access.
Jeb Hartness, 6
Joe DeRosa, 6. He is a long time NBA guy based in Canton, OH. Including the play in games he was worked 3 ncaa games so far.
Bert Smith, 8
Jamie Luckie, 6. He is an official for hire, worked like 90 games this year mostly big time stuff. Also, has done two ncaa tournament games so far.
Terry Wymer, 5. He has worked 3 tournament games so far including the play in game.
Bo Boroski, 6. I think he sucks and he only worked non con HL games.
DJ Carstensen used to work the HL and has done 2 tournament games so far. Not sure why he doesn't work the HL as his schedule wasn't full and he worked some mid major leagues.
In the SFA vs. VCU game Chris Beaver worked and he blew the game for VCU. SFA hit a late 3 and the shooter kicked his leg out and folded like a house of cards on minimal or no contact to make a 4 point play to tie the game. I instantly thought about the fans who hate the most common HL officials.
I think it was the SFA game or maybe the Tulsa game but a player got hit in the head with an accidental elbow from behind. It was reviewed and not called a flagrant 1 even with clear elbow to head contact. So I guess the rule is subjective for some officials or some games. It made me think of the Steve Skiles call against Alec Brown during the UWM game in the Resch Center.
I guess I posted this to show there are some well respected guys working the league. I also posted this because Peter Juzenas, Jeff Spedoske and Brad Gaston worked the league the most and didn't get in the rotation for the big dance. Also, Randy Heimerman, Paul Szelc and Kyle Ingram worked some big games for the league and didn't get in the rotation. So that tells me the HL needs to upgrade what they pay to get the top guys more often.
