They are to make the announcement on tomorrow. Hopefully, if it is Bothof, that would make the potential invite of NKU a bit easier, I would think.

Bothof would not have been named a finalist if his handling of the investigation this spring was in question.

I am not sure how I feel about this news. Surely he has been able to do some good things at GB with limited resources and no doubt the acadmecis are in order at GB. I think he has a decent story to tell to NKU. Plus I think he can help broker a movement to the HL for NKU. I would be curious to hear why he is looking or thinks this is a better opportunity.
I also think that the GB Athletic Department has hit a plateau of sorts and maybe this is better for GB. While I agree that it has been smart to put the resources behind men's and women's hoops yet I am not sure what is going on with soccer, volleyball or softball. I read in his bio that he has been working on plans for facility upgrades for soccer and softball but as a GB alum who pays pretty close attention reading it in his bio is the first I have heard of it. Plus several of these teams have struggled and had no signs of anything to change that up.
If he doesn't get the NKU job will we feel like he is always on the lookout for his next gig? What is that going to do for potential donors?

I think you answered your own question with your very next statement. He may feel like he has done all he can at Green Bay with your resources and sees NKU as having more potential. They have great facilities. Their athletic budget has been growing from year to year and they are no where near tapping their potential yet. I hope he doesn't leave because I think he has been good for Green Bay, but if he does I hope he goes to a potential future HL member's program. That is kind of my point about the plateau, if there aren't enough resources it was his job to get them.

I am not mad that he left and I happy he applied and did get the job compared to applying and not getting the job. I am hopeful that GB looks outside of their own people for a replacement. Most of the pieces are in place but a fresh perspective and a new voice could be just what the deparment needs to engage the community and donors to help get to the next level. I hope for better luck than uwm has had in finding a new athletic director. I thought uwm should have hired the guy from Whitewater, he would be on the top of my list.

Side note: My comment about uwm is only in general to replacing Haidet with multiple people in a short time and not related to the current hiring of Amanda Braun who very well could be a star.

He was a very profesional presense as athletic director. They'll miss him in one sense, but in another way, I think the line to replace him will be long and deep. UWGB pays very poorly, but it is still one of only 300 D-1 AD jobs in the country, at a school that is Top 25 in mens basketball and has Top 100 potential in mens. The Kress is a fabulous facility and with the right coach and team the Resch could be a great community arena. Bothof has had success with fundraising so there is something to build on there. I would think you could get a top aid at a BCS school to take a look, as long as they're not into instant gratification and know that they'll make big money in their next job if they succeed at GB.

Is UW-W's Paul Plinske a viable candidate?? He has helped build an athletics powerhouse for the Warhawks, but can he fundraise fir a mid-major D1 program? The soccer programs will need improvements to the stadium as well as softball.
Ken Bohtof was a steady presence as AD when the athletic department was going through some major transition especially in the last year of the Mike Heideman era. I just hope we don't go through any of the BS that UWM had to go through the past couple years from the end of the Bud Haidet era until the hire of Amanda Braun.

Ken has done a great job in Green Bay. I understand going out and asking for money is not a fun thing. NKU does have a lot more resources. You've had a great run in GB and I'm sure NKU will be better with hiring you. Good luck and don't forget you still have friends in GB. I hope to see you at future HL league games but I will be cheering for GB. But NKU will be my 2nd favorite and I'll follow them to see what a great job you're doing. So lets get NKU in the HL.

That was an honest assessment of the challenge the new AD will face.
Historically we all know the GB men's basketball program can pack the house and pay the bills. Dick Bennett achieved that but the UWGB administration made some fundamental mistakes after he left. Bothof did a solid job coming in several years after the Bennett departure but the damage was done. The shadow of Dick Bennett left the administration spoiled and the fan base skeptical of any of the men who have followed in his place. It was too much for Mike Heideman. Tod Kowalczyk was on a learning curve while he was dealing with the legacy. Brian Wardle, the best recruiter in the history of the school has also suffered from a learning curve and changing perception of what is acceptable for a coach/player relationship. Three good men who needed a strong Dutch Uncle to have a chance.
UWGB needs a blockbuster AD hire -- some fresh hungry energy. Wardle needs to keep growing and not hold destructive grudges that waste energy and make him appear less than he is as a coach and a person.

NKU: $9.1 million on athletics, $1.1 million on mens basketball GB: $7.4 million on athletics, $1.5 million on mens basketball

As a former state employee I might have another insight on the job change. Bothof has already qualified for a pension through the Wisconsin system. He's young enough to do the same in Kentucky. (NKU is a state school) Pensions are disappearing and maybe this is a move with an eye on that last stop before retiring? I think UWGB had an assistant coach who was able to tap into pensions from Minnesota and Wisconsin with this employment approach. It was a smart move.
