With transfers topping 1800 the scramble for a new landing spot has some student/athletes with fewer options every day. I'm seeing hoop dreams diminished as some wait too long to pick a school. It is a growing trend in the past few years as players staying at one school for their entire career is an unfortunate rarity -- both for their academic and ironically for their development on the court.
While some athletics are able to move to a high major school you might be surprised by recent statistics that indicate more and more transfers are ending up making a lateral move, sitting on the bench at their new school or stepping down one or two levels. It is musical chairs with the lives of young adults. My bet is the graduation rates for "scholarship" athletes will drop radically if this trend continues as athletes chase the golden ring and find what they have is even less than a brass ring future.
There are some young men and women out there that will be left out in the cold because they were not able to get the advice and support they need. I'm hoping things settle down soon and that this is not the new reality. It is short changing players, schools and fans -- to say nothing of making a mockery of the concept of "student/athlete."
