The ladies are 3-2 playing a tough NC schedule so far; wins versus #16 Mizzou and Dayton, and close losses to Northwestern and #15 DePaul. They have UW at home and a road games at mid-major power SDSU and #19 Marquette upcoming. Let's keep it going!!

Another great season for GB Women's basketball. Unfortunately their streak of winning another Horizon League Conference Championship was not to be nor was their return to the NCAA tournament as they lost to Wright State in the conference finals. For some strange reason the team kept their WNIT record going as once again they lost in the first round(I truly wished GB would make a statement during their WNIT but for strange reasons they cannot win a WNIT game). Some say it was because they always had to play away. Well its no longer a reason as they had their opportunity against Kent State at the Kress Center. Now my season critique. They say defense wins championships and again GB women had another awesome year playing defense. With that said, the women had a difficult time scoring and had a difficult time playing against teams that they should have beaten...case in point the season opener against Northwestern at home. Another observation was when Frankie Wurtz was not playing or when she had a lousy game offensively they had no other consistent offensive scorer. Now for the more positive. Coach Borseth along with his assistance coaches once again showed their ability to coach and win even with the lose of two seniors plus before the season started losing an excellent returning starter to injury and to make matters even worse was the lose of another excellent returning starter before a minute went by in the season opener. For the team to play at the level they did throughout the season showed the strength in their ability to coach and to keep the team fighting throughout the season. Mohns truly was a tremendous grad transfer who became a much stronger player as the season progressed.(wonder what the team would have been like to have had her play all four years at GB). The team stepped up playing against seven teams (South Dakota State-sweet 16, South Dakota, Maine, Marquette, DePaul, Missouri and Wright State) that ended up in the NCAA tournament winning 3 out of 8 games (won one/lost one against Wright State). Their five losses against the tournament teams were on their opponents home court. 2019-2020 season on paper looks like the team to beat in the Horizon League Conference. The team lose 3 starters but return 2 along with the two who did not play during the season as well as the bench players playing extensive minutes throughout the season. Coach Borseth brings in 3 outstanding in state recruits (Blackburn, 6'0 from Wauwatosa East; Hartwig, 6'2" from Janesville Parker; and Schultz, 5'11" from Luxemburg-Casco) of which I believe two will be prime candidates to redshirt. Now all we can hope for no injuries before and during the season along with the continual progress of Oskey, Wurtz, Robson, the twin towers (Wolf sisters), Brecht, Dier, redshirt Gallasova' and the healthy return of Pingel, Murphy and Hibner. I truly am looking forward to another exciting season for the team and if history stays the same the team will again be playing a very tough non-conference schedule. The conference teams have been improving each year which too will give the team a run for their money. GO PHOENIX...(added footnotes... the team lost long time GB favorite assistant coach Amanda Leonard-Perry to none other than St Norberts College, DePere, WI.

I recently read where there will be professional women's basketball being played at the Menominee Nations Arena this fall (same place the Bucks D-league team plays at). Believe there will be 4 former UWGB women's basketball players on one of the teams (LeClaire, Lindstrom, Kraker and Wojta). Additional news is the recent success of Bay Port High School, Howard-Suamico, WI women's basketball team....the team coached by former GB player Katy Harty won the most recent D-1 high school championship. For fun take a look at some of the women's high school basketball teams being coached by former UWGB women's basketball players..a true indicator at the talent and the development of players by the UWGB coaching staff.

From what I have been reading the GB women's basketball team supposedly have three verbals for the 2020: Ellie Foster, Dike-New Hartford HS, Iowa. Caelen Givens, Chippewa Falls HS, WI. Kendal Renard, Preble HS, Green Bay, WI. Believe the GB Press Gazette had an article about Kendal Renard coming to GB, fall 2020. But who knows for sure until the players sign their NLI.
