GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - After one of the most accomplished sophomore seasons in Green Bay men's basketball history, Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) has been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District 12 Second Team, the NABC office announced on Wednesday.
In 2011-12, Brown was a consistent force for Green Bay, leading the team in points, rebounds and blocked shots while securing a spot on the All-Horizon League First Team. The versatile big man averaged 13.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and a school-record 3.0 blocks per game.
"This is another honor that shows the respect that others have for Alec's consistency and talent and the impact that he has on both ends of the basketball court," said head coach Brian Wardle. "He has worked extremely hard to improve since he first stepped on campus and we are excited about his continued development."
Offensively, Brown scored in double figures in 23 of Green bay's 30 games and notched 20 points four times. Through two seasons in a Phoenix jersey, he has accumulated 739 career points, the fourth-most by a Green Bay player at the Division I era through his sophomore campaign.
Only Jeff Nordgaard, Tony Bennett and Mike Schachtner scored more in their sophomore season than Brown's 413 points in 2011-12. He was the first Green Bay sophomore since Jeff Nordgaard in 1993-94 to be named first-team all-conference.
Brown ranked in the top-10 in the league in a number of categories and was tied for first in rebounding in Horizon League play. His blocks average was second in the Horizon League and also currently ranks ninth nationally. He has more blocks (156) and rebounds (425) than any player in program history through their sophomore season.
He rewrote the Green Bay record book in terms of blocked shots in 2011-12. He blocked a shot in 27 of 30 games, breaking his own single-season school record with 89 swats on the year. On Jan. 14 against Wright State, he swatted a school and Horizon League record 11 shots in a 57-56 win at the Resch Center, a number that still stands as the most by any player nationally this season. He broke the program's career record by his 54th game and currently has 156 blocks in 62 career games.
Detroit's Ray McCallum, Youngstown State's Kendrick Perry and Valparaiso's Ryan Broekhoff and Kevin Van Wijk joined Brown on the NABC All-District 12 teams from the Horizon League.
