Markus, you're right above the Darner snafu not being that uncommon. It happens and frankly gives people something to talk about in the off season. I'm not uncomfortable with fans disagreeing and even if they come here with an agenda. How many times have people come to this discussion board in the past two weeks? I'm sure it's set a record. That shows interest in the program and that is healthy.
This is a tough situation for a first time AD. There are some good choices out there. The challenge is finding someone who understands the dynamics going in and can build on it.
Meanwhile one of the biggest recruiting weekends of the year is underway. The Chicago Jamfest has coaches from every D1, D2 and D3 school in the six state area and more from around the country. Two days after Bobby Hurley left for Arizona State, NY University of Buffalo has hired assistant Nate Oats to replace Hurley, according to ESPN.

Based on wat venci has put out there he has no clue of weather the hire is true or not. He just knows there isn't an official hire yet. That article makes u think there is no decision for sure. But he really seems to be on the outside on this one. I would lean towards wat was just said on here. With that said wouldn't that make the first leak true. No one could admit it cuz it's not on paper yet. Only time will tell.
We only have one open scholarship. positive is no current players left yet. Technically if they wanted to leave they could ask to be released already

I think the key would there is "offered." So we go back to the question of Kaplan's source (in Chicago) and ESPN's source. My guess is someone is trying to hurt the Green Bay program and or influence the outcome of the selection process. Perhaps a preemptive struck to knock a candidate out before it becomes too serious. This has more legs than "the grassy knoll theory."

A few thoughts.
1. I read online that the UW System has to have a job posted for two weeks before it can hire someone. Does anyone know if this is true? If so that can also explain the delay as Wardle has only been gone for two weeks.
2. Did Darner pull the Kevin Borseth? Perhaps they verbally agreed but he changed his mind. Word leaked but it was too late and the damage was done.
3. Buffalo has known Hurley was going for just as long if not longer than Green Bay knew about Wardle. Hurley played his cards perfect but he had little intention of coming back to Buffalo in my opinion so I wouldn't say it took only two days to hire a replacement as they have been getting ready for this for awhile.
4. Just because GB doesn't have an official staff doesn't mean they aren't recruiting this weekend. GB is going to hire a head coach and assistants who are currently working somewhere. We worry about losing Pittman, Okafor and Torres due to relationships with Wardle, Foster, Barone, Cornelius and Karius. Well whoever is going to work in GB is out recruiting this weekend and building relationships. If they do that right kids will follow them even if it is different kids than we are expecting to play here next year.

The school is at a recruiting disadvantage right now. There's simply less time to build relationships with current roster members and recruits. I wish it wasn't so. There's a difference recruiting to a NAIA, D2, D3 or D1 school. As well as a difference recruiting to one school or another. Perhaps the current recruits will still find GB attractive.
Once MEG is able to break her silence I hope she addresses the timing element and explains the process she went through.

Wolf would need a staff that could recruit. Kowalczyk and Wardle busted their butt on the recruiting trial. Is Wolf willing to do that? I don't know the answer. The current post players would have a heck of an experienced teacher. My read on his resume would raise major concerns about college coaching experience.
I am not at all sold on Joe Wolf. I am sure he knows basketball but his interest in the GB job seems to be based a lot more on coming home to WI full time. Perhaps he wants to get some D1 experience before Bo Ryan retires so that he can be considered for that job.
Anyway, his actual winning percentage in the CBA/NBDL isn't that good. I believe it is 55% or less and that was without having to recruit his players. I don't think his name resonates with any high school players outside of WI. I don't think he is going to walk into a kid's house in Indiana and anyone is going to care that he played with Michael Jordan and was drafted nearly 30 years ago. Plus I am leary of any potential coach that views this job as a destination. I don't think a coach is going to be wired to go 24/7/365 if they are comfortable. I know people will say this is crazy but I was talking to a friend and he described it as the difference between Borseth and Bollant. Borseth has a system and a track record but something seems to be missing as he rarely wins a tournament game. Bollant won a tournament game in 3 of his 5 years and made two sweet 16's. He wanted to move up and worked hard to put himself in a place to do so. I want a guy who is busting his rear everyday to get to the highest level and doesn't just deliver consistent winning. As fans of GB hoops I know we all want to dance. Ask yourself do you want to dance once, dance every year or build up to make noise in the dance? GB shouldn't hire any of the safe guys who can maybe keep them winning they should identify which guy has the best chance to make noise. I for one don't believe any guy who views this a destination job because they want to be home will be able to execute the total package to win tournament games and that is what I want.
If Wolf was HC, his staff composition is more critical since he has next to no college coaching experience. He will need 2 superstar recruiters (and another budding one in the DOBO position), and a veteran college coach (with some head experience; if he has a mentor of some kind, maybe he can be on staff like Dale Race was for TK). With Wolf's experience in the NBA/NBADL, I'm sure we will see a lot of NBA-style ball-screen continuity offenses, but it won't do you any good if you don't have a couple PG's on the roster or combo guards who can fill in at PG in spots.....Ask TK what his teams looked like when he had no PG depth while you had shooters (with little ability to create their own shots off the dribble) standing around waiting for a pass from a PG as they are getting double teamed.
I'm with you Tulsa on if Wolf will do the necessary work for recruiting. There is a lot of travel in an NBA season, but there is a lot of travel in D1 college as well. Not quite the coast-to-coast travel an NBA team will do but a lot of regional travel, and last I checked, GB is not UK where they have their own Gulfstream or private charter on standby for recruiting visits......which means more commercial travel and road trips.....TK and BW did bust their butt on the recruiting trail, but I think BW did a much better job establishing stronger regional ties in the WI, IA (JC's), IL, and IN....It seemed like TK had a scattered geographical approach with recruiting. Initially, he got a lot of players all over, then we had the MO/TX connections with Angres Thorpe on staff.
Wolf has the highest ceiling of the 3-4 presumed finalists (Wolf, Darner, Deiner, and GG), but it can also be the biggest disaster as well, especially if Wolf is lazy on the recruiting trail or he has the wrong guys on his staff.
I would love Wolf, but I would have to hold my breath.....I would take Darner or Deiner based on their tournament resume's, the championships won, and the mix of experience at other schools. Looking at the FL Southern roster, and to no surprise, he has quite a few players from IN, and from MD/DC area. Would make an interesting recruiting area for GB is Darner is hired.
I have been told my a source that GG is not a serious candidate at this time. Also, from another source MEG was in an interview when the news broke about Linc being hired. Lastly, I was told they expect to have this completed by midweek. So cross your fingers that part is true. We need to move forward.
