Mays was never benched for missing a shot. He wasn't playing defense, and the benching worked. You seem bitter about that. The team keeps winning big games. You seem bitter about that too. The reason we think Wardle is a good coach is simply because we understand the game. I don't think you all realize the other options that Wardle has off the bench. While not as quite as big, Humphrey has a similar body type and no doubt a greater skill set, half the time Lowe is defending at the top of the key anyway so I don't think it would be that radical to suggest that we could give up some size there in favor of more skill. Kanter should be the go-to big guy off the bench and has played well in his limited minutes. His offense is terrific in the post and he has not proved to be a liability on defense either. Uwadiae has not developed as of yet but his length on defense would be a boost. Lowe cannot block shots or rebound nearly as well as Uwadiae, however both are very uncoordinated. Believe it or not, other big guys can pass from the top of the key (although I really would rather just keep my big guys in the post) and wait for it....they can also put their hands up on defense too! Lowe should not be lauded because he "puts his hands up" and can pass at a college level. The deficiencies in his game should give Wardle every reason to keep him on the bench. Honestly, the reason I think Lowe gets playing time is because he just does whatever hot head Wardle tells him to and acts as his "pet", if you will. Why do you think Garrett got benched for the second half of last year? Not because of his play, but because he lacked a submissive attitude towards Wardle. The same goes for Mays this year it seems. I'm sure when Wardle gets heated in practice whomever doesn't cower in fear and obey is automatically put on his bad side. When someone doesn't follow his questionable gameplan, he throws a fit and benches them regardless of their overall performance. The argument that Wardle has to be a hardass as a coach is invalid. I too have coached and I can speak from experience that making players bow down to you doesn't work, there should be a mutual respect going both ways. Mays was in a little foul trouble in this one but that did not justify his frequent benching during the last 5 or so minutes of the game. Wardle plays timid in tight games and plays "not to lose" much like another Green Bay head coach we all know. Obviously you don't "simply understand the game" because anyone that has ever been exposed to basketball could tell in an instant who should be playing and who shouldn't, as well as the fact that Wardle himself does not win the team games. Lowe plays because of production. He's efficient offensively and plays team defense. Calling the shots he hit in this game lucky shows your bias against him. He's hit those same shots off of the same moves before. Garret was turnover prone, and carried a poor shooting%. He wasn't up to speed with defensive concepts. He needed another year in the system, but his eligibility was exhausted. Successful coaches bench players for non production all the time, this wasn't revolutionary. Mays picked up the effort and moved on. You should too. Mays did play late in this game. If you had been sober enough to see it, you'd have seen him make the game winning shot off of a set play after a time out. Also, you might prefer your bigs in the low post all the time, but good luck beating a zone with no high post. Is a necessary part of the game.

I agree with flye, I am glad your holding your position and still responding and you haven't been run off from this site yet. Anyone who does have a strong opinion against BW usually gets attacked so strongly that they leave because it isn't worth trying to convince a bunch of cool aide drinking followers. If Wardle was such a great coach he wouldn't be in Green Bay still! You have not bashed him in every comment you make and you have given credit to those who deserve it . BW happened to get very lucky with Kiefer and Brown. It will be very interesting to see what happens after Kiefer leaves. Flye, I can tell, you have played some basketball and understand the game. I really like your analysis and your points have made others who read this site think about what really could have been done with the talent on this team with a different coach imvolved. So Big V, if Wardle can't coach, then transfers should thrive with their new teams right? So how do you explain your boy Cole Stefans decline with North Dakota? Was that the coaches fault again?

With this win Green Bay is up to 57th in RPI, and is in the top 15 in defensive efficiency. It's an exciting time to be a Phoenix fan.

Just thinking about who could play over Lowe. There is no way Hendo should play over him. I like his size, his nickname and that is tough but he has no offense at this point and commits a lot of fouls. Part of the GB formula for winning is taking more free throws than the other team, Hendo fouling non stop won't help that. I wouldn't play Josh up front. At a generously listed 6'5" he isn't big enough to play down low. They would have to play Turner or Jordan down low and then have Josh fill their spot. I don't think either of those guys would thrive then. I know Jordan looked terrible down low last year when Alec was out. Plus Josh is so limited offensively, I have heard so many GB players say it helps when they have a lot of weapons that need to be stopped. If Josh played more the defense doesn't need to guard him at all. I would be open to seeing what Kanter can bring to the table. He is not limited offensively and has good size. My one concern is foot speed. One of the things I see a lot from GB is big guys switching out high on screens. With the exception of Ryan Harrow they have mostly been able to stay in front of these guards to force tough plays. I am not sure if Kanter can do that at this time but I don't know so playing him more we could find out what he has. Vince started out last year and was an energy player who made some nice plays on athletic ability and a lot of confidence. As the season went along though he turned out to be mistake prone and didn't understand his role on the team. When you have Sykes and Brown going I don't think we should have watched nearly as many turnovers from him putting his head down and trying to force it. The team played better without him. With him being a senior it sucks that he didn't get to play out his college career but he wasn't good enough to play his style and didn't seem willing to blend into a role on the team. Maybe it wasn't the benching for Mays but take a look at his game log and their is no doubt that his is more consistent and picked up his scoring, rebounding and defense since then. espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/player/gamelog/_/id/57158/greg-maysOn those two Lowe shots I just shook my head at because I wouldn't call those high percentage shots. Yet I do remember seeing some game tape of him in high school where he did a lot of that and I thought there is no way those kind of shots will work in the HL. So while I don't prefer to see that again in case it was a fluke I am open to the idea that maybe he is starting to figure out how to get his scoring going. He is in the second semester of his second year and that is about time that regular guys start to really get their college footing.
