For this game I have to give a lot of credit to CSU, once they started to play their athletes they really brought hustle and effort to the game that GB didn't match. GB survived but it wasn't the type of win I was expecting.
I also have to give a big shout out of appreciation to one of my least favorite refs in the HL Pete Juzenas. Pete was pretty clearly annoyed by CSU and seemed intent to not give them many calls. He really helped GB out with the way he called the game.
As for the rest of the game I thought GB's defense was good but they really didn't get a lot of close outs. They gave up 17 offensive rebounds, that isn't their style but again that was a lot of CSU hustle. With better rebounding and making some free throws this game would have just been another win and not a game that is stirring emotions.
As for Mays being benched in this game he had a rough minute and a half. He settled for a jumper, didn't follow that shot for a rebound that came off to his side, was floating on the perimeter on offense way past the high post, got in the way of a drive from Love, was floating on the one defensive possession he played and ended up guarding nobody and in general was moving around like he had bricks in his shoes. With that said I don't expect him to sit long, the message was sent. I look at a guy like Tevin Findlay who finished well last year and had to sit a long time this year to get the message. Yet he came in yesterday and played like was never out of the rotation. He played mostly good defense, grabbed some rebounds and moved the ball.
I don't think BW is the greatest X & O guy on the planet but I certainly think he is a good coach for the program overall. He certainly has an eye for physical talent. I will argue all day long that he does know how to coach up and develop players. He has players that are going to school and staying out of trouble for the most part. He has held his staff together for 5 seasons despite lower than average pay. Plus the end all is he wins. With their resources I can't imagine just anyone could do what he does.
As for the in game coaching I appreciate it. He is intense and the players usually respond to it. These aren't soft guys who don't love the game, these are guys who seem to respond to his style. Yelling things like "hands hands hands" or "high hands" over and over is just as much about setting the tone that GB is a team that defends than it is about actually getting their hands up. Tons of times his instruction for cuts, posts or passes have led to a basket that wouldn't have happened on its own or led to pass that prevented a turnover. I just watched Bradley play in person. They have athletes that put GB to shame and yet they sucked. For the most part Geno Ford doesn't have them coached up, they weren't intense and they don't have any plan of attack even a bad plan coming from the side lines. A guy like BW would take that team with his style and have them in the top tier of the MVC right away. I really believe that.
Brian is still learning his in game craft yet what can't be taken away is he is building a winner. After Alec Brown people thought they would be done and yet here they are currently the best team in the horizon and playing great defense. I don't know if Wardle gets a new job after this or not but I do know that as long as he is in GB I think they will compete at the top of the HL because of his recruiting, development of players and in game intensity.

Coaches are not able to grant athletic ability or skill, they can help fine tune them, but that is about it. The coaches did not create the skill or elite athleticism that Sykes or any of the guys have for that matter. I think it is more than fair to take a critical look at the quality of coaching, especially after this game. This is not a knee jerk reaction for me as I have noticed the same stuff lingering on from the past two years. Wardle never adjusts his gameplan effectively, he has no coherent playing rotation and he makes rash decisions based on emotion that effect the outcomes of his games. As I have repeated before, he is no mastermind of any sort when it comes to practical applications of coaching ability come game time. I don't know if you were at the game, but anyone that has ever watched basketball before would have recognized the need to push the ball in a more uptempo manner against the zone, as well as take advantage of the numerous open baselines. Normally, players would instinctually recognize these situations and take advantage of them, but whatever Wardle is telling the guys is effecting their play. A good coach also has to treat his players with dignity, and I'm not going to elaborate on his whole verbal abuse allegations (which I'm sure weren't just made up by numerous players out of thin air), but even with Mays in this game, there is no reason to bench him for the rest of the game after missing one shot after less than two minutes of game time, it was disrespectful to say the least. As someone also pointed out, Wardle was excessively yelling out obvious commands to his players for stuff they were already doing. In my opinion, when Wardle's gameplan doesn't work, he gets upset and lets his childish emotions get the better of him and in turn it hinders the team's performance. To constantly make excuses and turn a blind eye to the negatives of the coaching is wrong, and just point to the record and the fact that they get good talent from unheralded areas does not let one deduce great coaching. I'll say it a million times, this is a great team, and it could be an elite team with higher quality coaching. If you can't see the in-game adjustments Coach Wardle makes, then your not the basketball expert you pretend to be. The adjustments he made in the 2nd half versus Georgia State worked. That's a high quality team with a proven coach and 2 elite players. Your idea of trying to drive baseline against a trapping zone shows you're in over your head in any coaching discussion. That's exactly what the defense is trying to force. The team was actually showing good discipline for avoiding that trap, and you call it bad coaching. Green Bay has great athletes, but those players were under-recruited because of their skill and fundamental levels. Some coaches only recruit fully developed skill players. Those teams play a style purists applaud, even while they don't win. Billy Donlon and Wright State is an example of this. They settle for mediocrity while the coach is lauded for his players fundamental play, despite the fact it was taught to the players by their previous coaches. Wardle is willing to spend practice time developing his athletes into basketball players, even though that cuts into game prep and execution time. It's worth it, as it creates a higher ceiling team, if the coach is has the patience and vision to wait for the reward. Yes, coach Wardle coaches his team from the sidelines throughout the game, so did Dick Bennett. Would you rather have a coach like Rob Jeter who sits on the bench quietly while his team gets blown out? As for Mays, I was waiting for them to drop the hammer on him. A fully deserved benching that had nothing to do with one missed shot. His effort and focus have been missing all season. I watched practice on Monday, and Greg spent most of his time trying to joke around with teammates who were ignoring him. Hopefully Greg gets the message and gets to work, it would be a shame to see him continue to waste his incredible gifts. Kenneth Lowe is struggling offensively, but he's defending like a beast, which is why he's getting minutes. As for a coherent rotation, why is that important? Why is it a bad thing to reward a player who had a good week of practice with increased playing time? You complain about the effort level yesterday, don't you understand that competition breeds work ethic? Green Bay has a number of similar reserve guards. The rotation could continue to evolve all season. I'm not going to beat a dead horse, but all I'm going to say is that negativity does not breed positivity. I can tell by his verbal and non verbal language at every game that Wardle projects tension onto his players. I rarely, if ever, hear or see him do anything encouraging towards his players outside of a pat on the back. I can not stress this enough either: coaching in-game is totally different than recruiting and developing. Praise him all you want for how some of his guys turn out, but that does not make him a great coach. The last thing I'm going to say is that no, Lowe has not been a "beast" defensively. Over his last four games he has nearly the same rebound total as he does personal fouls. Lowe usually guards the 5 spot which has put up 46 points over the last 4 games. Not to mention he has mustered just a single steal and no blocks over that span. Even the stuff that does not show up in the box score is absent from Lowe's game (good footwork, forcing traps and assisting on turnovers). There is absolutely no way that anyone could intelligently argue that Kanter or even Humphrey (I realize he isn't big enough to play the center spot but maybe at the 4) could not produce better than Lowe. If looking uncoordinated, not rebounding and getting burned makes someone a beast, then hell, I must be a beast during pick up games too. Wardle has to give the rest of his bench outside of Lowe and Francis (who has been impressive) a fair chance to contribute, even if they are not spot-on in practice leading up to the games.

What was the issue with Findlay being in the "doghouse" that you mentioned? Seemed like he hadn't even gotten a chance to play at all really this year. Was it something on the court, off the court, or did he just irritate Wardle in general (which does not seem difficult to do)? Findlay usually seems pretty solid in general with the limited minutes he gets so I can't imagine it would be too performance related.

KnightLyfe, it seems like you simply don't like Wardle (much like a former GBPG columnist we all know), and you let your opinion of him as a person skew your view of him as a coach. Because there's no way anyone could say that the program isn't much improved from the mediocrity it was mired in during the Kowalczyk era (TK was a nice enough guy, but he didn't expand recruiting outside of the Wisconsin burbs and he was a little stand-offish towards the public.)
A couple of points of yours that I'd like to address: Mays - His benching was frankly overdue in my opinion. He was such a key last year but it seems like he came into this year with a sense of entitlement. He's been lazy on the court, and his decision making has been atrocious. He's played maybe one good half all year (vs. Miami). In the post game presser Wardle simply said he had to play better. Nothing wrong with holding a player accountable.
Free Throws - You think they don't work on them? I'm sure Wardle would go out and shoot them for the team if he was allowed (81% career at Marquette). Lowe seems to be in a funk at the line. He's the main perpetrator. Fouse has improved but will never be a great FT shooter.
Findlay - I don't recall him being in the doghouse at any point. He's a sophomore and is behind Sykes and Love on the depth chart. He's not a good enough shooter to play off the ball and Francis is a better slasher. I don't think its a doghouse issue, just other players are better. Now, Vince Garrett was in the doghouse.
Making Adjustments - If you don't think he makes in game adjustments then you don't pay attention. Just go watch the second Georgia State game. In game adjustments abound were made. Switched up defenses to limit Harrow and Hunter. Also, they haven't lost back-to-back regular season games in two years, but that's probably just because he stayed the course.
Teaching & Improving Players' abilities - Saying that you can't coach skills is just wrong. There is a list of players who have vastly improved in their years under Wardle, so your comments come off as biased and ignorant. Wardle and his staff recruits athletes and teach them basketball. Former regimes recruited basketball players but couldn't compete athletically. The only superior athletes I remember from past years were Terry Evans and Benito Flores. Flores had only a short time with the program and Evans never improved a single basketball skill. He could just jump out of the gym. A player lime Fouse or Mays would have floundered under past tutelage.
Treating Players with Dignity - First, don't assume you know the whole story from the allegations of past players and their helicopter parents. Second, you don't think Wardle commends or compliments players? Of course he does, but he's not a cheerleader. You think Bo Ryan gives a player a hug every time they do something right? This isn't little league.

Knightly I didn't mean to imply Tevin was in the doghouse. I certainly don't have inside information to that effect. What inside info on the team I do have I choose not to post online. What I took note of is something that I have heard several times over the years from BW, be a star in your role. I noticed Findlay still interacting with the team and coaches in a positive way so he didn't appear to be in the dog house. I took a little leap to assume that Tevin wasn't playing because he wasn't being a star in his role and I would guess was trying to do too much. However, when he was getting into games I saw him playing hard and trying to make the most of his minutes. To me it looks like he learned what it would take to play this year and has earned his way back into the rotation. I think that same lesson can apply to Mays, he can star in his role which should be a big role on this team this year.
I think a few guys do look spooked and BW has a fast hook for the reserves who don't execute their role. Botz turns down shots that he should take and I think he feels if he misses a lot he is coming out so instead he doesn't shoot. When he does shoot his shot looks pushed and flat right now. Small is another guy who is finding his way and probably isn't used to low minutes and a short leash. Francis seems to have found his way with that style and made an impact. He now seems poised for more clock moving forward.
I do have to comment on Kanter and Humphrey playing. Kanter is a long way from playing in my opinion. His offense sets the tone for his play, that isn't a trademark of this team. Josh really doesn't have the size to play up front and the skill to play in the back court. With him graduating I would rather any of his potential time go to Francis or Small so they can keep in or get in the groove.

I appreciate the feedback GBPhoenix1, good insight. As for GBalum2007, I did not make half of those points that you tried to hammer down, but nice try. No, I am not a Wardle fanatic as you correctly deduced, however just because I am not doesn't mean I am critical of the team overall. I think Wardle is a shotty coach as well as not too great of a person (please do not try to argue that several players completely fabricated the abuse allegations for some ulterior motive, if you've ever played sports you would know that the kind of verbal abuse they spoke of runs rampant everywhere and its not necessary, therefore their story is totally believable), but that's just me and I wish people would understand where I am coming from on that matter. And my second main point, which you failed to address, was the fact that Lowe is not a guy that should be getting minutes, period. From all the games I've watched (which has been all of them over the past two years) he is obviously not a good player, and there are plenty of other guys on the bench that could outshine him even on his best day, yet they do not get the chance because Wardle seems to play favorites. Again, I just look to be understood on that point, you don't have to 100% agree with me, but recognize that I am not totally wrong either. No one's opinion of the team is exactly the same, so I want to encourage people to not just give blind allegiance to Wardle, the rest of the staff, or even all of the players. Criticism is okay! You have to stay honest with yourself as a fan and recognize that not all operations of the team are perfect. Instead of calling me ignorant because I have a negative view of Wardle, the playing rotation and the playcalling, try looking at it through my lens maybe you'll understand that there are more flaws than you think that need to be ironed out.

knightlyfe920 I don't know where your coming from or going?
A GB favorite Dick Bennet said that he would not be able to Coach in 2014 because of all the scrunity. His strength was in breaking players down and then building them into how he wanted them to play (their role) in the team. He new he couldn't recruit against UW or Marquette. One of GB's best players Jeff Noorgard was always in his doghouse as a Freshman but he'll also say Dick made him a better player. Yes he was also on a short hook.
I've had season tickets since Dick Coached. I've watched good Coaches like Dick and hopefully Wardle. Also remember Coach Wardle is young by Head Coaching standards and does have a lot to learn. Example at the end of the CSU game I would have defended the 3 pt line and if they got a 2 so what. I would have used the 3 fouls we had to give by getting 2-5 ticks off the clock seeing we were only at 3 fouls with 15 seconds left in the game. I'm sure he didn't because of how we were shooting FT's. I didn't say anything because Coach has to live with the outcome. If he had done what I wanted CSU would have got a 2 and fouled us to send us to the line and who knows we might have lost? That's why I don't want to be a Coach or 2nd guess everything he does. I'm not there everyday at practice seeing what goes on and who's working hard and who's just skating along.
If you've watched this board I'm sure so of the posters would call me the FT Nazi because if they shoot 70% I want them to shoot 75%, I'll never be happy until it's 100%. I've restrained myself because I know they're under pressure enough with out others throwing it in their face. But players and teams get in a funk and I don't know why? If I did I could make a million $ selling it.
I've seen poor Coaches like Mike H who just couldn't relate to players and the players quit playing. I know why Mike doesn't have any hair. If you watched him he was always screaming at the players and pulling out his own hair. Dick Bennet also had his way of getting it accross to a player when he wasn't happy and it was comical to watch. I've seen average Coaches like TK who could Coach but had trouble interacting with the public. He also would turn around when a former player from the Bennet era tried to say hi or talk. He had a hard job following shortly after DB and always felt like he was being judged by DB's record . He forgot you should embrace the Busses, Bennets and everyone that built this program from D2 sports. It was also a two year extension program going to a 4 yr program when Buss built a BB team from nothing. He was also a winner.
You should take some of your own advise and see how you sound. You do come accross as a Troll, trying to stir up trouble and not being constructive. Players that don't play hard or freelance have to be reminded who's the Coach. It's not a fun job but it's Coaches job. Your don't have to like him as a player, his job is getting the most out of you not to be liked.

However it's not going to change my mind, the only one who is going to change my view of the guy is himself. I'm not going to apologize for not carrying the "accepted" or mainstream view on every issue on this site and that is drastically different from being a troll. If you've actually read all my posts, you would see that I don't just make abrasive comments for the hell of it or on a whim, I give thought out reasons for my critiques based on my observations. It's not a prerequisite of being a fan of the team to totally be in love with their coach, all the players and how the team operates.

I pulled from every one of your posts, with the exception of the Findlay one, which I just wanted to address but I believe someone else brought up. You harped on the Mays benching, free throw shooting as if it was a coaching error, lack of in game or between game adjustments, Wardle yelling at players in game/practice etc. I don't think he's a perfect coach, but I think he's a young coach with a lot of ambition and potential, who's still learning. I think he could have benefitted a lot from having a more experienced assistant in these first few years a la TK having Coach Race on his bench. All coaches have flaws and I'm more than willing to point out when I think an obvious error is being made, but I don't think anything has been so egregious to call him a shoddy coach at this point. I don't know what to say about Lowe. I'm on record here saying both he and Mays have seemed off all year. However, where Lowe's errors have been more execution related at least he's giving 100% effort. Mays doesn't seem into it at all and has been lacking focus/effort (see: settling for jumpers, not hustling, defensive lapses). I'd rather have the player on the floor that's trying. As was said, Kanter is not readyby any stretch. I would love to see Uwadiae a little more but he's 95% a liability on offense.

Nice reward for those doing the work to earn playing time, having to sit on the bench and watch others lose it for them. I welcome you to the board, but you might be best served to just read and learn for awhile rather than offering up such strong opinions despite such rudimentary understand of the sport. I like differing opinions because it brings out more participation, but opinions need to be based out of some type of fact. As for your bashing of Lowe, not sure where your coming up with the idea that he struggled last year from, if you understand efficiency stats, you'd realize he was outstanding a year ago.

Give the bench a fair shot even if they struggle in practice? What is this, 3rd grade YMCA? Should we give them participation trophies too? Lowe did play better last year than this year, but that still doesn't say much. What matters the most is this year and the fact of the matter is that you can't keep giving certain guys all the chances in the world and totally deny chances to guys that have potential to make an impact (Small, Kanter on offense, Uwadiae on defense etc...) I guess they shouldn't even play games if all that matters is practice. Why would guys who clearly struggle in games like Lowe and Botz (who has the second most minutes off the bench) get excessive opportunities just because of a good work ethic in practice? That should be valued, yes, but that does not allow the coaching staff to turn a blind eye to the numerous mistakes they make come gametime. As I said, I don't just make stuff up out of thin air, I actually give a basis for what I say. If you have actually read my posts you would recognize that and maybe not just pick out fragments here and there to criticize. Just because you don't like what is being said doesn't mean its misinformed or wrong.

"I appreciate you trying to make the exact same points, almost verbatim, that the other Wardle fanatics on here try to bombard me with. However it's not going to change my mind, the only one who is going to change my view of the guy is himself. I'm not going to apologize for not carrying the "accepted" or mainstream view on every issue on this site and that is drastically different from being a troll. It's not a prerequisite of being a fan of the team to totally be in love with their coach, all the players and how the team operates" I talked about Dave Buss, Dick Bennet, Mike H, TK and UWGB for 98% of my post. Yet you zeroed in on Coach Wardles name being said 2 times and Coach a couple of other times. 1. Neutral, and 1 saying I would have done it different. The players you talk about may turn into good-great players in 1-2 more years but are the typical one GB gets that need work. You also talk about rewarding players who don't play hard in practice over ones that work their tails off. You started out promoting Mays who has been a great player. But except for one game in the last 6 or so has has been out of position, late getting back on defense and just not playing like he had in the past. He needs a wake up or he'll be spending a lot of time on the bench. Many people in our section talk about his lack of effort. They all hope he gets back to form, but right now he is a liabilty. When you joined 12/31/2014, give no information on who you are and have 6-8 posts that are all very abrasive when someone answer you. Yet you expect that we'll accept you as a expert? That's why I said you sound like a Troll who got a new email address so you could get back on the board under a new name. It's funny that you would pick Knight as in St. Norberts as part of your name? Most pick something to do with UWGB or something about themselves. I wish you luck but hate gets you no where. I have given up on you and if there was a ignore button I wouldn't even read your rants. You say you back every thing up but pick and chose very carefully. I also will not respond again as you have blinders on and just want to disrupt team chemistry.

I also will not respond again as you have blinders on and just want to disrupt team chemistry. Well since you asked, my username reflects my university as you correctly guessed (I'm a senior there), but I have been a Phoenix fan ever since I was a little kid. I have been an assistant coach in various sports for the last four years, granted not in basketball, but the same basic principles still apply to all sports which is why I give my two cents on coaching, however I have NEVER once claimed to be an expert by any means. I've read these forums for a while but I've never felt the need to post anything until after the CSU game which left me extremely frustrated to watch as a fan and I wanted to see if anyone had similar feelings about the team. Instead of questioning my background, level of coaching knowledge or allegiance to the team. Lets drop it and return this forum back to strictly basketball talk for the rest of the fans that want to actually read about the team.
