At a school like UCLA, you will always be compared to John Wooden. At Illinois, you may be able to win, but the Big Ten is such a grinder. You have to get past MSU, UW, OSU, Michigan, and IU first.......Minnesota tried to get Smart, but playing in a crappy old barn and no practice facility scares a lot of top coaching prospects away, despite the fact that Smart could have played for his old AD, Norwoord Teague.
With MU, they have the highest spend for a basketball program in the country. Also, it would be easier for him to adopt his 'havoc' style and finish near the top of the Big East. And he won't have to share the spotlight with a football program since BB is the only game in town at MU.....It would be a huge upgrade if they got Smart (better than Buzz and possibly better than Crean).

There was an article in the paper today about the new AD wanting to do what it takes to keep coach Wardle and his staff. I am fine by that and as I mentioned with how things ended this year they shouldn't have to overpay too much. Hopefully more money goes into the recruiting, travel and home game budget. Improving that would actually lead to higher salaries for the staff in the long run.
What I thought was interesting was that both Wardle and Gillespie had no comment about Marquette or other schools reaching out to Wardle. Answering no comment to a yes or no question to me translates into one of four things.
It could mean yes Marquette has him on the list. It could mean Marquette hasn't reached out but someone else has. It could mean that by adding to the perception that teams are interested, even if they aren't, that Wardle and Gillespie can squeeze the school and community for more money for the program. It could mean that nobody has reached out to them. What do you think?
Also, if the Marquette fan base thinks they are getting Shaka Smart and end up with Brian Wardle...well that will be a lot ot overcome right away.

I would have said Monday that GB had an excellent chance at keeping Wardle. Marquette isn't too familiar with him as a coach, and their leadership is so disconnected that they'd probably just go for a big name.
Now that they have our chancellor who is very familiar, he may go in Brian's direction. If he does, great for him. You move on to the next guy and hope the new AD is as good at hiring coaches as Bothof was. Just the realities of our current level.
Perhaps Angres Thorpe is ready to lead?

Sent from my SCH-R970 using proboards Lovell worked with Howland at Pitt, so that's where the most familiarity is. Wardle will be here. Marquette for some reason is now pursuing Cuonzo Martin. He has Marquette alum Jon Harris on his staff. Still don't understand the interest. Either way, Wardle isn't going to Marquette.

He doesn't have support from Tenn. so wants out. Good instate recruiter in Tenn. but would that carry over here? Would he be looking at Marquette as a end or a stepping stone. I still think Howland has to be the front runner or a suprise pick gets it?

I think MU would be wise to stay away from Howland......There were too may questions on player treatment, oversight, and discipline late in his tenure at UCLA. I don't think MU doesn't want any negative pub around the next coaching hire. The program has had good momentum after Crean left and Buzz kept it going.....If they hired Howland, I think that momentum would stop and MU would return to the glory days [insert sarcasm here] of Bob Dukiet. ;-)

I am on the other side of 97 on this one. Of the names that MU is looking at only Howland makes sense to me. He has had 3 coaching stops in his career. As the head guy at Northern Arizona he did well. He did well at Pitt. In fact I would suggest they wouldn't be what they are today without Howland rebuilding it. At UCLA on the biggest stage he went to 3 straight final fours. He is the only guy they are looking at that is a proven winner at every level (low major, high major and elite level). Sure he has a reputation of being hard to deal with but I think the booster base at MU will look past that if he is winning. Dick Bennett and Bo Ryan are loved in this state because they win and play defense. I think Howland would be at least on that level.
Wojo?? I get the lineage but he has no experience. MU can do better. Plus that guy is bouncing in 5 years to Duke if he does well.
Martin hasn't proven a lot. Especially since he had the good fortune of being in a bracket with a mid major upset (Mercer over Duke). I am not saying UT couldn't beat Duke but if things play out by the seeds and UT is one of the last 4 in and only wins a game is he even in the conversation? Honestly I would go with Wardle over Martin. Martin has a head start in experience but their resumes aren't too much different at similar points in their careers. I think Martin is fine but this school can do better than fine.

Reading the stories in the LA Times there are a number of pieces of luggage Howland is carrying with him. No thanks Martin and Wojo are excellent candidates. Both are on the rise.

I know Cris Collins (another Duke assistant) got the job at Northwestern and kept them from completely bottoming out like many had predicted. He didn't have any HC experience prior to that; If MU hires Wojo, that may be the blueprint that MU can look to.
I don't know why Vols fans don't like Martin. His records at Mo. State and Tennessee improved each season. They need to get over the fact that Bruce Pearl is now coaching at Auburn.....If Martin does not end up at MU, I can see him leaving Tennessee regardless. If nobody wants you, despite winning games, why stay......Vols fans need to remember that they are not UK. Enjoy you slide into mediocrity Vols fans.....Ask Wake Forest how things went after they booted Dino Gaudo despite going to the NCAA's his last year there.

Cuonzo Martin won with other coaches players this year, and now they're gone. He's built nothing there on his own. They look to really struggle next year. He'd be an underwhelming hire for Marquette. He's OK, but they'll continue to be the 3rd best team in the state with him at the helm and Wardle at Green Bay.
Wojo is an interesting candidate, but I think it's funny that he's getting looks because of the supposedly great job Chris Collins did this year. NU had the same record they did the year before, and their success was because they finally had a healthy Drew Crawford. Wojo could be another Amaker, and that's a reason to hire him. He'd view Marquette as a stepping stone, but they shouldn't worry about the eventual Duke opening. I'd think Amaker is in line for that, not Wojo.
I'm still laughing about the Shaka Smart debacle. Not at Marquette, but at some of the people who reported it a done deal.

Either Ammaker (if he can maintain what he has done at Harvard), or Johnny Dawkins if he can inch Stanford into a top 3-4 team in the Pac 12 the next several years, he may also be in line when Coack K hangs it up.

ESPN is reporting its Wojo for Marquette. If this comes to fruition, then congrats to them on a quality hire.
Also congrats to us on likely retaining Coach Wardle.

It's been reported in Milwaukee Journal that it was between Wojo and Martin. Also that Martin pulled his name Monday night so this one might be right. lol Yes I'm glad we're keeping Wardle. Ive heard he had some hard feelings after last summer. Felt he could have had more support from School Management which I have to agree with. He's personable, relates to the players, has recruited well, and in my opinion he's gotten better on decision making in pressure situations even though I still grumble a few times a season. I understand he still growing into the job and expect great things in the next couple of years. I've seen him make great strids each year and I hope he can relax a little and enjoy what he's doing.

I hope this means we do get to keep Wardle, but Marquette is not the only opening out there. I also hope they are working on a contract extension that will make it more attractive to stay in Green Bay, it might make it easier to put any hard feelings behind. I expect this uncertainty may have impacted recruiting, I am hoping for a replacement for Brown if not in 2014 then perhaps from the 2015 class.

Since Bohtof is gone and Chancellor Harden is on his way out, the main connections to last summer's mistreatment (more like 'Helicopter Parents and their Millenial Children Gone Bad' episode) accusation investigation on BW will be gone.....It looks like Gillespie wants to keep BW and hopefully GB will get a chancellor who has more of a clue and will embed themselves in the community better than Harden has done.....I liked Bruce Sheppard when he was at GB.
One school that may court BW if they have another lackluster season in 2014-2015......DePaul. BW is from the Chicago area and has recruited well in that area. With a new downtown arena coming soon (McCormick Place instead of driving halfway accross the city to Allstate Arena/Rosemont Horizon), that job may be attractive.
