NIT 1st Round
Belmont Bruins (24-9, 14-2) @ Green Bay Phoenix (24-6, 14-2)
When: Tuesday, 7:15
Where, The Resch Center, Green Bay
Streaming: ESPN3
To quote the movie Major League, "Well there is only one thing left to do. What's that? Win the whole f'ing thing."
I certainly think GB is one of the top 12 seeds in this tournament. However, I understand the other metrics that go in to it. They did get an interesting draw and they need to be ready by Tuesday. The game is at 7:15 at the Resch. As a side note it appears they spent a lot of time lobbying to be in the big dance and not a lot of time getting ready for the NIT. No word on tickets and believe me I will be angry if I don't have my normal seats! With only 46 hours to turn this around the GB community needs to really rally. We need a big crowd on a short notice on a week night. If there are only 2000 people there I will consider it a failure and justification for the 4 seed on ESPN3.
To build off of that, this is a great opportunity to show Belmont why the HL is the place they want to be for all sports. A competitive game in front of a good crowd can't help but leave an impression on their people.
As for the game itself, on paper it looks like a contrast in styles. Belmont doesn't appear to defend or rebound very well. They do appear to shoot and score with the best of them. They score 80ppg, shoot 50% from the field, 39% from deep and are plus 100 in assists to turnover for the year. They allow 74 ppg, allow 46% shooting and get out rebounded by 2 per game.
I get the sense that they have a little Oakland in them. From a standpoint of joining the HL, they don't seem to be fit with some of the grinders in this league.
Their best player and the OVC player of the year is 6'6" and can shoot. I hope Jordan Fouse is up to the task because that looks like it will be his guy. Their best big is Drew Windler from South Milwaukee. He can shoot as well. Alec has 4 inches on him and can play outside as well, I hope he can really disrupt Drew.
On the season against common opponents Belmont beat Fairfield at home by 9, beat Tenn Tech at home by 2 and lost on the road to them by 5. Belmont also beat UNC by 3, split with Indiana State and lost to VCU at home by 13. I know GB isn't VCU but from a style standpoint there are similarities so maybe GB can overwhelm them. In road games they are 9-7 on the year.
So everyone who is able please come out for this game. It is big for the program and could also be big for the league. It will be a battle of who can implement their style. I hope GB has their plays scouted and the guys know the report because it is still do or die time and I am not prepared for anything but doing!!
