Pepperdine is a surprising 4-1 this year with a host of newcomers. Pepperdine's rotation includes Lamond Murray Jr. Many Phoenix fans will remember his dad, Lamond Sr, who averaged 22 PPG for the 93-94 Cal team UWGB upset in the NCAA tournament. While much of the attention went to Gary Grzesk for shutting down Jason Kid, Kid wasn't actually a scorer, and it was the pace of play that shut him down more than anything. The work Eric LeDuc and company did on Murray was amazing, and was the key to the greatest win in Phoenix history.
A surprise in last nights games, as winless Tulsa edged 4-1 Indiana St. Indiana St. won on the road against then ranked Notre Dame earlier this year.

It was the biggest GB win in their history imho. Cal had two 1st round NBA draft choices that year. Thanks for the channels for todays game, that's why I came into the site.

GB up 39-38 at half. GB 7-11 on 3's. A half of runs GB had a 10 pointer, then Pepperdine ran off 10-12 then GB ran maybe 6 to get the lead back up to 7 for 2nd time. Then Pepperdine wittled away until half. Coach said at half that we need to do better job in transition and stop giving up easy shoots around the basket. Imo Mays and Vince playing very well on offense and Mays awesume on defense. KS also had his moments. But we were out rebounded and shot 10% less from the field than Pepperdine. Pepperdines big man shot I think 6-6 or 7-7 in 1st half. 15 min. left in 2nd half. GB up 49-45. Interesting GB 9-13 on 3 pointers and 6-13 on FT's. Also 9 blocks for the game so far and score 53-45 with 13 minutes left. GB up by 10 with 11 minutes. Help off the bench from Lowe. Tough defense with big men taking over the boards. 21-7 run by GB up 67-52. 7 min. left time out Pepperdine. Score 69-52 GB slowly pulling away, bench is to deep for Pepperdine. Mays and Brown with 14 pts each. 3 1/2 min. to go score 78-66. May and AB both with 16 pts. AB really having a nice 2nd half. 78-69 with just under 2 minutes. Pepperdine has 19 TO's GB doesn't have very many. Only negative is FT shooting and missed a number of front ends on 1-1's. Skykes really doing a good job on FT's at the end 8-8. Score 84-74 with 1:06. Love just hit 4-4 on FT's but Pepperdine hitting 3's score 89-82 with 38 seconds. Kykes hits 2 more FT's GB up 91-84 with 31 seconds. Sykes gets 2 more FT's I think he's 14-14. Score up 93-87 as Pepperdine gets a 3 for every 2 FT's we've been getting. Final score 97-89, fun game to watch. GB really stepped it up on FT's at the end to seal the game. All GB the 2nd half though Pepperdine hit a lot of 3's at the end. Mays gets the Mighty Moose award as MVP for the game. Funny hat and good time. Congrats GB Men.
Stats from the game. Really stepped it up on FT's and only 3 TO's that's the best I can ever remember? AB hit 3 2nd half 3 Pter's to break it open and Jordan had 3 steals in a row. All the starters and bench came up big. The stats say it all. Harvard beat Denver 68-60 in last game.

The Nix were dominate at times against Pepperdine. This team has the chance to do something GB hasn't done since the Bennett days.

Impressive win for the Phoenix. Easy to see how Pepperdine entered the game 4-1. They had some very impressive indiviuals in UCLA transfer Brendon Lane and freshman PG Jeremy Major. Coach Wardle was very forthright to the sideline reporter at the half the he was unhappy with the defensive execution. The D got after it early in the 2nd half and forced a ton of turnovers, fueling GB's running game. Significant contributions by everyone in the 8 man rotation. My favorite stat of the game was 25 Phoenix assists to just 4 turnovers. The free throw shooting was abysmal early, but absolute money at crunch time. This team is showing they can shoot the 3, in large part because it has better shot selection than the last few years. Here's an interesting game story from the Anchorage Daily News: Pho Slamma Jamma

Tonights match-up versus Harvard is the true championship of this tourney. Harvard is impressive. Their only loss was a close one they dropped at Colorado last week. They return most of the team that upset Arizona in the Big Dance last year. Their staters played huge minutes against Denver, hopefully GB's transition game can wear them out.
While I realize it's way too early to be looking at RPI, but I've done it anyway simply because its not everyday the Green Bay Phoenix is 10th in the nation. Nice!

I just had to check that one out and 2 of the 3 RPI's had us listed 10 wow. They other 1 had us 23 which is still great. If they can just finish it out in Alaska it really would be sweet. Yes tonights game is the toughest team we'll face in Alaska. Didn't plan to stay up to 11 PM to watch but I might just have to. Looks like channel 1322 again.

Phoenix had a slow start with TO's and defense. But with 6;48 it 25-23 Harvard. AB and KS has got them back into the game. 5 minutes left in the half and GB has it's 1st lead 28-25 on AB 3 pter. 2:11 left in 1st half score 30-30. The difference I'm seeing in Ab is he's hunting his shot and not putting the ball on the ground. He gets the ball and looks to shot, no hesitation. Harvard hits a 2 with 1 sec. to tie game at half 34-34, nice game. Sykes, Brown doing most of the damage. But bench is getting alot of playing time due to fouls. Harvard was in dbl bonus with 3-4 min. left to go in the half. GB 46-45 with 11:55 min. in 2nd half. Again a lot of players getting time. Harvard up by 4 with 10 min. and Harvard in the bonus already. Garrett and Mays in foul trouble most of the game so others getting minutes. 56-54 GB with Harvard at the line at 7:18. Harvard up by 5. Gb can't get a shot down and probably out rebounded by 10 now. Gb over 4 min. with out a point. GB down 8 with just under 4 min. Love going to the line for 3 FT's. The difference was TO's, rebounds and defense. Mays and Garrett were never a factor. No help for Sykes, AB, and Love. A chance for others to come up big and no help from the bench or other starters. Stats KS came up big AB and CL did well but nobody else stepped up at all. KS and AB looked tired at the end. Between Mays, Humphreys, Garrett, and Fulton we had 60 minutes of court time but need more results. 2 personel fouls for every point scored.

I thought the game was lost when Harvard went to a zone for the last 10 minutes. GB went from a quick-strike attack and free-flowing offense to being really slowed down. Harvard is very good, but game could have gone either

The Nix had the edge in this game all the way to the under 8 minute mark. Amaker switched to a zone defense at that time out and it stalled GB’s offense. Harvard is a disciplined team with enough athleticism to neutralize what the Nix do best. I can’t help but feel if GB had a few more games under the belt things would have been different in this one. The bottom line it was a heck of an effort against a NCAA Tournament level team.
This was a game to build on.

I thought the game was lost when Harvard went to a zone for the last 10 minutes. GB went from a quick-strike attack and free-flowing offense to being really slowed down. Harvard is very good, but game could have gone either Yes they missed a chance. Yes a game to learn from and more games under their belt probably would have helped. I beleive GB was the more talented team but Harvard showed better team work. Rebounding and shooting just went south because of the zone. Announcers keep saying GB shot and 1 and done. Harvard getting 2 and sometimes 3 put backs. I'm going to look at the reb and TO stats now. Added them to my post. But out rebounded 40-26 and lost turnovers by 10-16. A minus 14 on rebounds should not happen and -6 on TO's didn't help. We had a better percentage on shots and very close on FT's but Harvard had a lot more attempts. Steals were just about even too. Results we played a very good tournament tested team and need to learn from it and get battle hardened for the next time.

Watching the game it was obvious that the team was gassed because they played almost the entire 2nd half and on back to back days. Very tough when you've only played a couple games before the tournament. Alec Brown's shots were coming up short because his legs were tired and Sykes just stopped driving in general and settled for jump shots. Should have kept the rotation to keep legs fresh.
That said tonight could be an interesting game against Tulsa, the team is only 1-5 but has played some very good teams.
