I see the job opening has now been posted and applicants have until 8/9 to apply. I know Dan McIver is running the department in the mean time. Just my opinion but guys like McIver seem like solid administrators but I am not sure about the fund raising side. It is my opinion that D1 athletics is just as much about money as it is anything else. In order for the Phoenix to make the next step I want an AD that can raise tons of money and then hire/retain a solid administrative base of assistants to help with the day to day operations.

www.greenbayphoenix.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=22500&ATCLID=209261901The final five candidates have been announced for the AD position. Just doing some research online I can't say I am blown away by the choices. I am sure most of these 5 would do a good job but I don't see anyone that just screams I can take this program to the next level. Mankato State has nice facilities but they were all built prior to Buisman arriving. I don't see a team that is a D2 power at all sports and I don't see a guy who has connections to the area. So what does this candidate bring to GB? Chicago State has a nice hoops arena, built prior to Schumacher arriving. The baseball field does seem to be on his watch. They did join the WAC on his watch as well. I think they have added to the hoops staff as well. In general I see a guy who is in charge of a bad situation trying to make it better. Not sure how that translates to what GB needs. The guy from Western Illinois is a no go for me. He has connections to area which is nice but other than that his track record at Western Illinois doesn't set the world on fire. They have bad facilities so clearly he couldn't raise the money. On the field they don't strike me as successful. He seems like a place holder, a guy how won't run it in the ground but won't grow it either. Mary Ellen Gillespie seems like a fund raiser. I like that about her. Then again does she have the vision to do anything with those funds? During her time BGSU built the Stroh's Center. Looking online it is probably the least impressive newer mid major D1 basketball building I have seen. Not that it is her fault but they built an average building but leaders rise to the top and somebody should have been aiming for more. This is Dan McIver's race to win. He is an alum. He has been in the program. He has the most local connections. The head of the search committee is friendly with him. If he is named the AD I hope he can break out from being a good administrator and lead this program to the next level. I was kind of leaning towards getting a fresh set of eyes on the situation so I would go for the Chicago State guy but I wouldn't be mad if Dan McIver is the guy either.

I would be happy with Dan McIver. It would be interesting to see how he is as a fundraiser, but has the advantage of seeing what Ken Bohtof did and what didn't work.
If we do go external, I like Mary Ellen Gillespie, since she is the fundraiser type we need. I did look at BGSU's Stroh Center. It's a no-frills version of the Kress Center, but I don't know if I would put that on her. How much input did BGSU's AD, President, and any major donors had on the building design and capacity? It was about the same size as the old Anderson Arena at BGSU.
The other candidates don't exactly excite me.....Whoever we hire, they need to plug themselves in the community. We don't need a hermit-administrator who hides in his/her office.

All of the above statements are well put. My own feelings are the only thing holding GB back is a lack of funds. We'll never get funds from the State so we need to have community involvement. The problem is we're a step child and the Packers get first choice and GB is an after thought? So who ever gets it needs to be able to get funds and probably come up with a lot of new ideas. It's going to be a hard fight but winnable to increase the athletic budget and the coaches pay.

I would have to agree that none of the candidates stand out above the others. Given that I have no personal exposure to any of them I would like to see what an alumni like Dan McIver can do. I expect McIver can handle the administrative side, hopefully he can step out in the community and be an effective fund raiser.

Given that GB recently switched radio networks and just extended the lease with PMI I would have to think it is a done deal to hire McIver. Those are two bigger decisions to make for an interim employee.

Someone has to be first to post. I had seen it as well but I have not seen anything from either university. Good for Dan, not a huge surprise since he was passed over for the promotion.

Good luck to Dan.....Hope it was Ken giving Dan more authority (and pay) and based on their strong working relationship versus any possible friction between the new AD and Dan.
Does this pave the way for a future move to HL now more than ever???

Does this pave the way for a future move to HL now more than ever??? Make no mistake: the HL was a big reason, probably second after his fundraising, that NKU brought Bothof to Cincinnati. And we should take them. He kept GB, with practically no money, afloat for a decade through fundraising. Imagine what he will do now at NKU where they have money flowing through that program? Bothof raised some money for the facilities but the student money was committed before he arrived. He really didn't raise that much for the operating budget. Plus I know some people who quit working for the Athletic Department because they felt like Bothof was content and didn't want to hear new ideas. A long time ago I knew Dan and I wish him well. However, I am more than happy with getting some new blood in there. GB gets a lot out of the resources it has but does it with less regard for how to implement ideas to gain more resources IMO.

And to add further details to this- Dan McIver leaving is not at all related to not getting along with Mary Ellen our new AD. One of the associate AD's at Northern Kentucky was caught up in an embezzlement scandal and Bothof reached out to Dan to get him to come down to N Kentucky to help straighten out the mess down there.

Thanks Shamrock this is what we were hoping. Didn't know about the problem at NKU. We all liked Dan and it had to be hard not getting your dream job. It's a good place to learn I think this was maybe there 2nd year in D1 so a lot of up side.
