There was absolutely zero pretty about this win. But celebrate the small things. This was the first non-con road win since 2019. The team is 2-2 and has a winnable game tomorrow. Defense will win some games. I’m off to enjoy a victory bourbon! Cheers!

This is the worst basketball game I’ve ever seen in my life….it looks like when my intramural team and our opponent both agreed to play drunk back in the day. I suppose we could ask the team to revert back to playing drunk but with no effort and intensity. Obviously this game isn't one for the hall of fame but it is a sign of what type of guys the Phoenix have. I'm surprised all Phoenix fans aren't happy that the worst team in the country rebuilt a program that 4 games into the new season is already hanging with and now beating teams that would have previously destroyed GB.

Have to be happy with rebounding and effort. Free-throw shooting will be the death of me.
The defense was inconsistent but much better than last year.

When the announcer for the game was thanking the production team doing the ESPN feed as one of the best in the nation, I immediately went to listen to Brian on radio feed, yikes, I suppose this guy will do the game tomorrow. Looks like a tv feed sound blackout tomorrow. You were wise to switch, every time Montana drove to the hoop they were hammered and every questionable call that went GB's way was wrong.

Doesn’t matter to me if it was pretty or not. That win feels damn good. Last year we would have gone into that game knowing it’s a minimum 15 point loss.
The tv announcer was also quite perplexed why the crowd wasn’t getting into it. He had to have mentioned it 5 times.
Go Phoenix!

Yeah, I'm so really good with a win, imagine how much worse this would feel had we lost after all that. I thought it was an entertaining game, this is pretty refreshing compared to last year's pain. Can't add much to what already has been said about turnovers, FT shooting and 3-point shooting. We may be in end-of-game situations again where we can ice a game at the FT line, that seriously needs to get fixed.
Anybody sense that we sort of went into slow, milk the clock type of offense there for a bit later in the 2nd half? Do you think that threw us out of sync a bit maybe? Sucks that tonight's game is not going to be on TV anywhere - would UC Riverside have a feed of some sort?

At one point MSU went in to a 1-3-1 defense. That kind of change for an inexperienced team is going to cause issues for the offense at this stage in the season.

While obviously not the same stakes, last night's game was giving me flashbacks to the 2014 NFC Championship game.
Felt like it was in the bag, then the guys seemed like they were doing everything in their power to piss it away to the point where it seemed certain Montana State was going to win it at the buzzer in OT. Elijah Jones had an opportunity for a dunk with like 35 seconds left that surely would've put the game away but it was just one of those games where Montana State did everything right and GB did absolutely nothing right down the stretch to make it a game.
That being said, it is 100% better to get these learning opportunities while still winning games. I have missed this kind of late game drama over the past few years. Winning is fun!
Lets make it two in a row tonight.

Per Kyle Malzhan, Foster Wonders is dealing with a personal issue and should be back soon.
Hope all is ok with Foster!

GB should have spent significant time in the last 21 days perfecting a game plan for a defense none of their opponents use as a primary defense or have shown on film to use for extended amounts of possessions?

If you got locked down by a D3 team (albeit a good one), then, yes, certainly some time should’ve been devoted to it. Who is to say that now that teams have more film on this Wicks led team that they won’t start throwing defensive sets at them that they clearly can’t score on. That’s called just general preparedness, and should really be due diligence now that 2/5 teams have locked them down this way.

If there was unlimited amounts of practice time to work on things with players that don't have other responsibilities like school work, then sure they should have a game plan for every scenario. In game #4 of the season to have a game plan ready for a defense that an opposing team normally doesn't play isn't the best use of the time they have to prepare. Especially when they are still perfecting their core identity as a team.
