All the coach speculation and no one has started a game thread for tonight, so I'll do the honors!
Won't it be interesting to watch the sidelines tonight for signs of some kind of spark. This is the start of a 4 game road swing - at NKU tonight, then at Wright State and then next Saturday February 4th at IUPUI for what will sadly be the game of the year. Let's hope we can get something moving in the right direction by the time that game gets here, as I feel like IUPUI has been playing better, which is way more than we have been able to say.
We're getting 17 points despite NKU shellacking us by 21 at home just a week and a half ago on 1/14/23. Good luck to interim Coach Owens, will be curious to see what differences we see in style of play, discipline (hopefully), and mix of playing time.

I think we keep this game within 12. Not kidding. This will actually be a fight. I think the boys are going to have something to prove tonight since they are free from Will's shackles.
First game I've been excited for all year. Let's get it done boys, go show some grit.

Better energy than this team has shown all year. Brock is a good kid but dear god he should not be starting. At least let Dono get a starting run. Nate in there is a head scratcher, too, but I get with the biggest adversity game of the year, going with guys that have at least started makes a little sense.
Jack Rose is that dude. Full stop. Kid has handles, can shoot, never gives up on the glass and is one of the biggest cheerleaders on the sidelines. I couldn't have been slightly more indifferent when he committed here but he is winning me over. He was certainly the fan favorite at the Resch the other night, too.

Jack Rose = the future
(Unless he transfers)

Close game at the half, but we’ve seen this movie before.
Let’s see if Coach Owens can get the squad to come out and stay in it. I like the fight they’re showing tonight so far.

Freddie? You want to gain trust? Get Brock off the floor, this is getting absurd.

It’s gotten ugly late but for the most part the effort has been there. Jack rose has looked like a guy who should have seen spot minutes all year long. Brock was awful tonight. Can’t expect miracles with the same cast of characters but they looked alive tonight vs the home stand.

Well they battled longer than a Ryan team but in the end the result was the same. Too many turnovers. Oh well. Better things aren’t complicated by an end of the year run

The turnovers were awful. Like god awful. We rebounded well, which was nice, and we at least tried to battle on defense. One of the more enjoyable games I've watched recently, despite the outcome.

They beat themselves again. 20 turnovers, 14 steals= 31 points. The biggest job for coach Owens is getting these guys to believe they can win. Take away the turnovers it could be a different game.

If you didn't watch the game and I posted the stats would anyone really think anything was different? Be honest.
They held on for 30 minutes instead of 20.
No I'm not saying Will should be the coach. I'm saying if you were expecting anything significantly different that unfortunately may not be realistic.
The players have actually been pretty resilient in most of the games from an energy perspective. They come out in most games ready. They fade as the score widens. That took longer tonight but from an overall execution perspective it was a lot of the same. It took 15 seconds every possession to get the ball inside the arc. They still gave up lobs. They went under screens on Warrick.
The TV announcers talked like it was so much different and from my perspective it wasn't.
I am optimistic that now that there is no longer an icy relationship between the coach and the AD that Freddie and the guys will feel free and play better. The last 4 home games were so uncomfortable given what looked like a very frigid work environment.
As for Jack Rose, he was sick and had been sick for a significant portion of time. In October he was looking like a rotation guy. By the time he came back Garren and Randy were playing well and he wasn't in the mix. Hopefully he keeps his momentum going.

Looked like Davin Ziegler wasn’t on bench for NKU game, if I’m seeing that right. In the game against Robert Morris when he was substituted out for Jack Rose later in second half, it looked like he was showing his displeasure in returning to bench which during accompanying timeout it looked like he had to be coaxed into participating in huddle by a couple of other players. Did anybody notice this??? Correlation to his absence???
