It has been awhile since the Green Bay Phoenix men have played a game at home. For those that may have forgot where GB plays, head to the Lambeau Atrium and then go east by about a block.
This time they return to action at 7pm on Thursday against the Wright State Raiders. An old friend comes back to town as Amari Davis returns to GB. Though all of his friends in GB are gone and we are just another team in green uniforms to him now.
Anyway, Wright State is kind of the opposite of the game that GB just played against CSU. WSU isn't a great defensive team but they do score a lot. The are second in the league in points scored and 7th in points allowed. They are number 1 in assists and number 2 in field goal percentage. They have two big guys that play a lot but aren't a great rebounding team overall. Though Noel is a great individual rebounder and he is coming in with something like 5 straight double doubles. Noel is the ultimate garbage man. He just picks up loose balls and has great finishing skills around the rim. He has some range too but is mostly just able to physically dominate down low with a soft touch. The other big guy is AJ Braun. He is super slow and not physically strong but he too has good footwork and a nice finishing touch around the rim. He has zero range and isn't a great defensive player.
The other two main guys are Trey Calvin and of course Amari. Amari Davis is great in transition but seems lost in the half court offense. Calvin on the other hand is a fantastic shooter, great finisher, knows how to get separation for a shot and if you do take him away he is one of the top assist guys in the league. Zae Blake needs to be really good on the ball. No lazy BS. No stupid fouls. If he can slow down Calvin then the game is winnable. If he plays like he did against Moore of Oakland this is a double digit loss. To me it is as simple as that. This isn't high school or Juco ball anymore, other guys are just as quick and they play harder on both ends.
For GB lets hope their improved shooting continues. While the last year and half haven't been fun from a results standpoint the team has never gone into ball hog mode. This team does share the ball, they just haven't made buckets. The bench was super engaged the last two games so they still believe they can win games and with some on the ball defense and physical play on the glass they can have a chance to win this game too.
Also, I think there is a military appreciation night happening on Thursday as well as a pregame gathering for those that would like to learn more about the NIL Collective that is in place.
