CSU has some nice length and athletic ability at several positions. They seem to play aggressive man to man defense. They do look to score in transition as their half court offense doesn't have many playmakers. They are a better rebounding team than GB, their length helps but I wouldn't say they are a good rebounding team.
Get back in transition and fighting on the glass like they did in the second half on Thursday are going to be keys to the game. Do those things and use a nine man rotation of Blake, Tucker, Cummings, Heffner, Meyer, Wade, Zeigler, Davis and D Short and I think we will be pleasantly surprised by the results.

Just not a good shooting Nix team. Watching them, their offense seems unplanned(or the other team's guys are all better across the board). 10 turnovers and 36% shooting will not get it done.

Today was a loss I’m actually not upset about. Guys fought hard, couldn’t get enough stops down the stretch but they were in it til the end. Probably their best road performance of the season.

Not overly pissed. Ha

To KMell's point they weren't really prepared for the CSU defense in the first half. They made adjustments, for the most part stayed out of the side ball screen trap and they started scoring in waves. It also helped that Zae wasn't in second half foul trouble, to Coach Ryan's credit they let Zae play when he picked up an early 3rd foul. Zae was able to get the ball ahead in transition for easy hoops. He also is a way better ball handler so CSU couldn't use their full court defense against him the way they could against most of the remaining guards in the first half.
While Coach Ryan made some nice moves for the offense and was rewarded by guys hitting shots, I would say his defensive strategy was the complete opposite and we didn't see any adjustments until it was too late.
For example they were going under the ball screens. Now guys like Zae are just incredibly below average on defense to begin with and he was extremely bad when going under the screen. How is it possible to still get beat to the spot when he isn't even trailing over the screen? Over the course of a game they can get away with that against the likes of Parker. However, Lowder is a good shooter and he just stepped back and lit GB up. They finally went over and he missed one. I didn't see what they did another time but he dropped it to Spider Johnson for a dunk. I just don't understand why they kept going under for Lowder.
Even worse was the defensive handling of Enaruna. This is a dude with minimal shooting ability and minimal ability to put the ball on the floor from the perimeter. So CSU used lot of little screens for him to get in the post. Two things stood out. One, we had players that were 3 plus inches shorter than Enaruna guarding him most of the game. Brock was available and chilling on the bench. Take Nate out and play Brock so that we can have Randy and Clarence match up on guards for example. Second and more troubling to me. Why does GB rarely double team the post? Against SNC they got beat inside on single coverage. Last week against Oakland some scrub off the bench went for double digits on mostly single coverage. Then in the second half CSU came right out to Enaruna on the left block. He was on that block all half against smaller dudes mostly in single coverage and he went nuts. Including the two exhibition games, this was game 19 and they still don't have a defensive strategy down low to help the guys succeed.
GB has one of the worst defenses in the country. On most nights I see guys that don't play defense hard enough or for long enough so I give the coach a pass. I know he works on getting guys to the D1 effort level. For this game I didn't see the defensive strategy adjustments that could stop the two guys that were doing work. GB scored almost 20 more than their average and still lost. To a team that also scored 15 plus over its average.
There were other reasons the team didn't win that weren't related to the defense but for this game when they did a lot right I am going to say the coach has to help them get over the hump.
Anyway, it was fun to feel like they actually were going to win a road game. For where the team has been this was an enjoyable game, though frustrating when a rare victory slips through their fingers.

This was the best game of the season, but it was also a very winnable game. It was again a tale of 2 half's. They did win the second half 50 to 48 with only 3 turnovers they did a good job on the boards and limiting the second chance points. Now for the first half giving up 15 points on 10 t urnovers. If you cut this number in half you win the game. I don't understand why Cade only has 2 points in the first half? They have to figure out how to get him the ball in the first half, after all he is Green Bays version of Drew Timme. The coaches have to figure out a way to get these guys to buy into playing defense for 40 minutes. You are not going to win many games giving up 82 points a game. They need to develop a bench. I do get that DZ is just coming back and has to shake off some rust and Brock is not 100% either. Great game, but still lots of work to do.

It was nice to see some competitive games. Time to take it to another level.
They need more contribution from the bench.

GB had a guard score 10 points off the bench against Oakland and then 10 more when they played PFW. Two games, 20 combined points. That player was on the court for 7 minutes against CSU.
Meanwhile a guard that played 12 minutes against CSU had scored a combined 17 points in the 10 games prior to CSU.
I get that there are things in basketball that don't show up in the box score but GB is close to last or in last in every statistical area in the conference. They need to be populating the box score.
I want every player to be successful, make a contribution and look back on their time in GB fondly. I am not cheering against anyone. I am hoping the guys with the best chance to be productive are put on the court. We may be waiting awhile for bench production if the coach wants intangibles on the court. Settling for intangibles has the team at 6-40 vs D1 teams in the last two seasons.

GBPhoenix1 hit it on the head. This is my primary frustration. You need to play the best guys. This is the position you are in. I get there have been injuries and illness, but the rotation continues to make you wonder on a game to game basis.
